PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | WR Mike Evans | This is the pick. We all know it. It's likely the correct pick as well, as the Rams have John David Booty ready to succeed, but needed a target outside of David Nelson for him to throw to. Mike Evans fits nicely on the roster. |
1.02 | | QB David Carr | New England just got their mentor in Byron Leftwich. David Carr is a slam-dunk pick for them and will likely start immediately. Fans will quickly be saying "Tom Brady who?" especially considering the so-called "esteemed quarterback" never amounted to anything in his football career. |
1.03 | | CB Kyle Fuller | Aaron Williams is on the trade block which only solidifies my belief that the Titans are looking at Fuller with the 3rd overall pick. The Dolphins have shown us how important shutdown cornerbacks are so Fuller pushes the Titans in that direction. |
1.04 | | WR Kelvin Benjamin | Carolina wanted Mike Evans, but it was never going to happen. Benjamin is a happy plan B and should do well in Carolina. The big question mark is QB, but Drew Stanton should be enough to get them six wins. |
1.05 | | LE Jadeveon Clowney | GM Rock Hewko has become harder and harder to predict over the years, outside of knowing Seattle will have a good season whenever he is on the hot seat. This pick feels like a lock to be Clowney due to his size, but we'll see. |
1.06 | | CB Stanley Jean-Baptiste | Yes, I know the Titans just picked Kyle Fuller, but you have to think they may double dip on secondary here. It gives them leverage to move both Casey Heyward and Aaron Williams while maintaining a high quality secondary. |
1.07 | | CB Justin Gilbert | I imagine the Packers traded up in the hopes of landing Stanley Jean-Baptiste...but they miss out on him. Gilbert is a solid second option and someone they shouldn't be mad at acquiring. The question is whether he is better or worse than Aaron Ross whom they traded for this pick. |
1.08 | | WR Kevin Norwood | This pick could easily be a defensive end, but with Chris Long already on the roster, I think Norwood is the new receiver for up and coming quarterback Ryan Tannehill. He's not as elite as Mike Evans, but he'll have a nice career. |
1.09 | | CB Dontae Johnson | I think Hewko has to be wondering if he could have selected Jean-Baptiste at 1.06 and still gotten Clowney at this selection. Johnson should be a quality starter and has the tall frame that Rock covets. But he's not an obvious win. |
1.10 | | SS Jonathan Dowling | I keep wondering where Dowling will go. He's been linked to the Seahawks, but I don't know how much they value the safety position. He's a tall, strong safety who packs a punch and should fit nicely on a Denver roster looking to make it back to the playoffs. |
1.11 | | LE Demarcus Lawrence | I think in this situation I have to take Lawrence to play at LE. The team has an obvious hole there and if he works out (his size is the big question mark), he should be an absolute stud of a player with double digit sacks each season. |
1.12 | | CB Pierre Desir | We'll likely see a run on cornerbacks somewhere around the 8-13 slot in this draft. It's very much a "pick your poison" scenario. Desir seems to fit the style of player that GM Brad Barber likes the most, so I'll pair them up here. |
1.13 | | CB Darqueze Dennard | Like I said, there will be a run. Dennard seems like a high IQ player that would succeed in Cleveland. He may even start year one. He has the speed and decent height, but a bad skew could absolutely wreck his potential. |
1.14 | | WR Jarvis Landry | I'm sticking with my Jarvis Landry pick here. He seems like a good fit for this Saints roster and likely will see himself quickly become the #1 receiver in a run heavy offense. He'll be consistent, but won't show it via stats. |
1.15 | | CB Walt Aikens | Dallas just spent a buttload on their secondary (after complaining for over a season about the same happening before!). They're also smart enough to know those contracts won't all see their end, so they may draft a raw talent here to groom. |
1.16 | | ROLB Khalil Mack | Mack probably isn't the best outside linebacker in the class, but he has the name. That makes me want to slot him in here. Don't get me wrong -- Mack will still be a very good SFL player, especially if he has a favorable skew. |
1.17 | | DT Daniel McCullers | GM Kevin Mullendore finds great role-players in his draft classes. They just lost Anttaj Hawthorne to a nasty contract (my stupid mistake), so they backfill him with the absolute unit that is Daniel McCullers. Not a bad pivot. |
1.18 | | LT Taylor Lewan | Well, I'm an idiot. I got this far and somehow forgot Taylor Lewan. But I'm too lazy to go back, so you're welcome Neal. Enjoy this pipedream because if Lewan drops this far, it's going to be a crazy draft day for everyone. |
1.19 | | WR Cody Latimer | The window is beginning to close on draft gem Thigpen. The Ravens need to get him as many threats as possible right now so Latimer may be the best of the bunch at this spot. Not a bad pickup by any means and he should produce. |
1.20 | | WR Ryan Grant | As with cornerbacks, this is where I think we may see a run on wide receivers. Grant is fast and fits the type of game that GM Neal Wintermute likes to run. This is also a "pick your poison" position, but Grant is a nice pick. |
1.21 | | LT Jake Matthews | I won't be able to help myself. I've finally decided I'm keeping Eugene Monroe, but if Matthews is available to me at 1.21, there is no way I don't select him. Monroe or Tretter would instantly be traded and Matthews would be the future. |
1.22 | | QB Teddy Bridgewater | Okay, this is a unique pick. Yes, the Bears have Erik Ainge primed and ready to go, but GM Brent Lachapelle likes to draft for value. Bridgewater is dropping for some reason in mock drafts (I have suspicions), but Chicago may take a risk on him. |
1.23 | | RT Joel Bitonio | The Bears also like to shore up their offensive line. Really, the time looks threatening as is, so these are luxury picks to become quality starters. Bitonio is a stud and seems the type of player to thrive in the Windy City. |
1.24 | | WR Martavis Bryant | There's a new sheriff in town! Jordy Nelson is gone for a trade that previous GM Tim Miller says "I never would have been offered that!" Cohen has the magic, but he has to fill that spot now. Bryant's height may be too much to pass up. |
1.25 | | LE Dee Ford | After drafting a new secondary, Tennessee will pivot their attention to their front seven. Dee Ford could play anywhere on the line, but you get the feeling he might be a solid right end in the right system. Tennessee drafts him and gives him that chance. |
1.26 | | LE Larry Webster | One pick too late! I think Carolina has to be interested in Ford as well, but Webster is a massive frame who should play somewhat decently at defensive end. He's raw, but a good skew would go a long way. |
1.27 | | WR Donte Moncrief | This is GM Gary Cohen's style. Tall, fast wide receivers. Moncrief is the best left available so he snatches him up, hoping that the quarterback situation will be fluid enough to help the Steelers back to the playoffs. |
1.28 | | LT Billy Turner | I haven't seen Turner's name mentioned much, but he's a solid offensive lineman that should get drafted somewhat high in this draft. The Colts need an additional offensive lineman so this is the perfect spot for him to go. |
1.29 | | RG Zack Martin | You have to assume that Martin will skew up, based on name alone. Regardless, he should be a quality player given the opportunity to play. The Titans need to protect their new signal caller and this is the best way. |
1.30 | | RT Cameron Fleming | What's this, a run on offensive linemen? If they drop early (like happened here), you bet your life they will! The top tier are gone however, so San Francisco will hone in on Fleming who is a touch tough, but should see some success. |
1.31 | | CB Antone Exum Jr. | Recievers and secondary will be the story in Pittsburgh. After adding two quick receivers, they will add Exum Jr. as another secondary option and hope that his skew is somewhat positive as a negative skew could be catastrophic. |
1.32 | | HB Alfred Blue | It's time for a new running back era in Phoenix. I wouldn't be surprised if this was Carlos Hyde, but Alfred Blue appears to be the safer pick. There's also something to be said for Devonta Freeman. Regardless, I expect this to be running back. |
