2015 SFL Draft Preview- Defense

DE’s
Frank Clarke- 22 years old, 6’3”, 272 lbs.
90 SPD | 99 STR | 32 AWR | 81 AGI | 88 ACC | 56 TAK

There’s no better DE that has ever come through the SFL physically that Clarke. He’s a stud unlike any other. BUT his AWR and TAK are huge areas of concern. He will go high in the draft because of the position and his physical attributes.

Preston Smith- 23 years old, 6’5”, 265 lbs.
91 SPD | 88 STR | 33 AWR | 84 AGI | 81 ACC | 58 TAK

Smith is also an elite physical attribute DE. He lacks ideal ACC but every other physical attribute shines. Like Clarke, he has major problems with AWR and TAK. Still that shouldn’t limit him from being a first round selection.

Danielle Hunter- 20 years old, 6’5”, 252 lbs.
87 SPD | 76 STR | 33 AWR | 90 AGI | 82 ACC | 68 TAK

Hunter is a really good DE in his own right. His ACC is a little low and his AWR is very low but I love the 90 AGI. I think that plays well plus he is only 20 years old.

Dante Fowler Jr.- 21 years old, 6’3”, 261 lbs.
85 SPD | 72 STR | 32 AWR | 77 AGI | 87 ACC | 67 TAK
Most years a guy like Fowler Jr. with his physical attributes would go really high, but this is not most years. Again 32 AWR is not a good place to start.

Mario Edwards Jr.- 21 years old, 6’3”, 280 lbs.
79 SPD | 76 STR | 35 AWR | 79 AGI | 89 ACC | 66 TAK

Edwards Jr. is sneaky good in my mind. Having a guy who could be 80 SPD, 80 STR, 80 AGI, and 90 ACC after one season and who is also 280 lbs. is a pretty good deal.

Markus Golden- 22 years old, 6’3”, 259 lbs.
80 SPD | 83 STR | 49 AWR | 83 AGI | 86 ACC | 61 TAK
Golden feels a little pedestrian compared the guys above him but he is still a quality DE. And he has among the highest AWR in the class.

Vic Beasly- 23 years old, 6’3”, 235 lbs.
71 SPD | 91 STR | 49 AWR | 88 AGI | 86 ACC | 69 TAK

I doubt many have Beasly this high because of how light he is but I love his AGI and ACC. He might be one of those guys whose attributes carry him despite his size.

Henry Anderson- 24 years old, 6’6”, 294 lbs.
78 SPD | 88 STR | 42 AWR | 75 AGI | 81 ACC | 67 TAK

There’s much to like about Anderson as well. He will be more popular than some of the guys I have above him. There is a lot of talent at the DE position.

DT’s
Carl Davis- 23 years old, 6’5”, 320 lbs.
71 SPD | 92 STR | 46 AWR | 73 AGI | 80 ACC | 81 TAK

This is not a particularly great DT class but Davis is at the top of the my list. He has good size and good athleticism. Though his AWR is low he has pretty decent TAK. He’d make a good DT or could probably also be a decent 3-4 DE.

Michael Bennett- 22 years old, 6’2”, 293 lbs.
71 SPD | 89 STR | 53 AWR | 66 AGI | 82 ACC | 74 TAK

Bennett has good athleticism as well, but he lacks the ideal size particularly his height. If you don’t care about size Bennett will have really good SPD and ACC for the position so he will be on your radar.

Eddie Goldman- 21 years old, 6’4”, 336 lbs.
59 SPD | 92 STR | 62 AWR | 69 AGI | 74 ACC | 77 TAK

Goldman is perhaps the best NT in this draft unless you primarily care about STR. Don’t get me wrong he has good STR, but his size is where he stands out compared to the rest of the players.

David Perry- 23 years old, 6’3”, 300 lbs.
73 SPD | 84 STR | 48 AWR | 70 AGI | 82 ACC | 72 TAK

Perry is a poor man’s Davis. Davis has better height and weight and STR but Perry can be very serviceable for teams looking for a DT in the middle rounds.

Jordan Phillips- 22 years old, 6’5”, 329 lbs.
56 SPD | 99 STR | 40 AWR | 66 AGI | 74 ACC | 72 TAK

I didn’t see Phillips on my first several passes through the draft class. This is because of his SPD and AWR. However, I recently noticed him and I think there will be some GM’s who see him higher up the class because of his size and elite STR. I think there are certain GM’s that almost only care about STR. If you fit this description, then Phillips is definitely on your list.

OLB’s
Lorenzo Mauldin- 22 years old, 6’4”, 259 lbs.
91 SPD | 72 STR | 50 AWR | 90 AGI | 92 ACC | 43 CTH | 78 TAK

If this is anywhere close to where Mauldin ends up he’s going to be a star. I know his AWR is low but 90+ SPD, AGI, and ACC is elite and then when you add in his size he’s the best in this class.

Za’Darius Smith- 22 years old, 6’4”, 275 lbs.
87 SPD | 73 STR | 61 AWR | 89 AGI | 87 ACC | 39 CTH | 82 TAK

Smith is one of the biggest OLB’s we’ve ever seen and he is very athletic as well. He’s a definite 1st round pick unless there’s a major skew down but even then he’ll likely still go high.

Bernardrick McKinney- 22 years old, 6’4”, 246 lbs.
89 SPD | 78 STR | 63 AWR | 85 AGI | 86 ACC | 47 CTH | 80 TAK

McKinney is yet another good sized athletic OLB. I love the high end SPD and he good overall attributes other than maybe his CTH. I would think he’s a 1st rounder as well.

Bud Dupree- 22 years old, 6’4”, 259 lbs.
86 SPD | 70 STR | 56 AWR | 82 AGI | 86 ACC | 60 CTH | 72 TAK

Dupree is a good OLB as well. He’s a bit more of a project than the others but he’s still a big athletic player with high upside.

MLB’s
Jake Ryan- 23 years old, 6’2”, 240 lbs.
86 SPD | 80 STR | 60 AWR | 86 AGI | 91 ACC | 56 CTH | 85 TAK

It’s tough to figure out who the best MLB in this class. I have Ryan by a hair but I totally understand if either Anthony, Perryman, or Alexander are rater higher.

Stephen Anthony- 23 years old, 6’3”, 245 lbs.
84 SPD | 84 STR | 65 AWR | 84 AGI | 88 ACC | 62 CTH | 82 TAK

Anthony doesn’t have the SPD but he’s strong overall in all the other areas. It may well come down to pre-draft workouts to find out who will go where.

Denzel Perryman- 21 years old, 5’11”, 240 lbs.
87 SPD | 86 STR | 64 AWR | 89 AGI | 89 ACC | 50 CTH | 83 TAK

I love everything about Perryman except that he is 5’11’. I think that will matter in terms of going off the board first.

D.J. Alexander- 23 years old, 6’2”, 233 lbs.
80 SPD | 92 STR | 72 AWR | 92 AGI | 92 ACC | 51 CTH | 83 TAK

Alexander is the most intriguing of any of the MLB’s in this draft because of his 90+ STR, AGI, and ACC. I don’t recall seeing any OLB like him in any other class. He’s also got very high AWR which makes him even more tempting for certain GM’s.

Erik Kendricks- 23 years old, 6’0”, 232 lbs.
84 SPD | 81 STR | 64 AWR | 86 AGI | 86 ACC | 73 CTH | 89 TAK

Kendricks is another good OLB but he’s a tad short as well. I love the high CTH and above average TAK. If a team can get him in round 2 that’s a good deal.

I ran out of time so there will be not be a preview of CB's or S's.
