Rookie Position Review: QB
QB – Full disclosure… I’ve been reluctant to invest anything of value in the ways of a draft pick for a rookie QB, but that will likely change in the 2016 draft for me and the Indianapolis Colts. Top attributes of importance (and in this order): AWR / Age / THP / THA. If a GM plans on drafting a QB I tend to feel having a mentor in place is CRITICAL and ideally the team has plans of playing the rookie up to 3 games per progression period (to maximize the growth of the player). Knowing AWR and THA are attributes you’ll be progressing… identifying a player that’s 22 years of age or younger is ideal and his THP rating should be 92 or greater (anyone older or processing a weaker arm really doesn’t seem like a logical target in the 1st round). I tend to believe most GM’s would shy away from a scrambling QB… personally – I don’t care about tendency if other attributes are ideal (I’d simply pay to change the tendency). Here are the QB’s I feel have 1st round value (in no particular order and before Private Workout:
• QB Jared Goff: Probably the safest pick… Goff has the highest AWR [62] and highest THA [92]. His arm strength could use a positive skew [91] and will likely need an Activity Points investment [75K] – he stands 6’4” (nice HGT) and is 22 years old.
• QB Carson Wentz: A little older [23] than you’d want and will possibly require an Activity Points investment to change his tendency. Worth mentioning… Wentz has respectable AWR [60] and arm strength [93].
• Nate Sudfeld: We should start with the obvious… Sudfeld has a CANNON for an arm [99]! He’s RAW and will take a little bit more patience knowing his AWR [55] needs to be worked – but at 21 years of age he’s a LONG view option if a team has a mentor. His presence in the pocket can be felt standing at 6’5” – he’s strong [STR = 70] and hard to bring down [BTK = 63].
• QB Christian Hackenberg: Another strong-armed gunslinger… Hackenberg will be an asset in the vertical game [THP = 99]! Again, a player that will take some patience knowing his AWR [55] needs to be worked – still young enough at 22 years of age to be a LONG view option if a team has a mentor.
• QB Dak Presscott: No doubt with a strong arm [95] and accuracy [92] in hand, Presscott will be considered as an option for a team needing a signal caller. He’s a bit older [23] and on the short side [6’2”]… plan on investing on a tendency change via Activity Points [75K].
I'd grade the 2016 QB Draft Class a B-... though I'm not seeing anyone I'd classify as a CAN'T MISS prospect, the options seem plentiful. I think we'll see three QB's drafted in the 1st round for sure... but could see as many as 5 being taken in the opening round.
