1.1 New Orleans Saints - QB Mitchell Trubisky - North Carolina
The Saints finally get their replacement for David Green after enduring two seasons with a void. Trubisky comes into the league with rare awareness, good accuracy, and a strong arm.
1.2 San Diego Chargers - SS Eddie Jackson - Alabama
I believe Will has his eye on Jackson. He would prefer not to have to use 1.2 on him, but if he doesn't take him the rival Raiders probably will with one of their next TWO picks. Will has the mentor in place and I don't believe it is for the benefit of Karl Joseph. A studly Left End like Godchaux is also a possibility, but Will probably feels he can get this later, such as at 1.13. Private workouts could flip the order these two needs are filled.
1.3 Oakland Raiders - DE Myles Garrett - Texas A&M
Brad wants a stud LE for his switch back to the 4-3 and Garrett is probably who he has his sights set on for that. The Raiders did just trade for Derrick Harvey, but he's already 30 years old and is probably just insurance in case Garrett goes at 1.2. Eddie Jackson would be another good option here if he is still available.
1.4 Oakland Raiders - CB Marlon Humphrey - Alabama
With no real holes that align with best players available, I believe the Raiders will take the best value players here which is Humphrey. Brad is probably committed to mentoring Hackenberg again this season so not having a mentor for Humphrey isn't a concern. Coming into the league with 66AWR, one season of mentoring in 2018 is probably sufficient anyway. While the Raiders would probably prefer to walk away with Garrett and Jackson, you can't be too disappointed with Garrett and Humphrey!
1.5 Atlanta Falcons - WR Kenny Golladay - N. Illinois
I have Golladay as my top receiver in this draft and I have a feeling that Garth does as well. He would be great fit for the Falcons' offense and a great complement opposite WR Kevin Norwood. Safety is also a need but there are none available warranting this high of a pick. Falcons may trade down, and they have already mentioned that as a possibility if their top players (likely including Jackson and Golladay) are gone.
1.6 Chicago Bears - QB Deshaun Watson - Clemson
The Bears are historically smart drafters that don't reach for players and are not used to picking in the top ten. I originally had them taking a cornerback here, which they have a history of doing in the first round, but failed to realize that they drafted CB Ryan Smith in the first round last year. Although it creates a mentoring dilemma, I now think they will use the rare opportunity of drafting this high to grab the future replacement for Erik Ainge.
1.7 Miami Dolphins - CB Kevin King - Washington
Most analysts expect the Dolphins to either go WR or CB with this pick. The Dolphins have already spent heavily this offseason to bring in WR Chris Conley and I don't see them spending another top ten pick on the same position - especially since they also seem content with Green-Beckham, basically Patrick Turner reborn whom has worked great for them in the past. I do think Daren goes cornerback here, but he highly prioritizes height at the position so unless the skew is really bad, the pick will be Kevin King.
UPDATE: Pick 1.8 has been traded to the Washington Redskins.
1.8 Washington Redskins - WR JuJu Smith Schuster - USC
As a result of the huge trade that just hit, the Redskins now find themselves picking at 1.8 with a much younger quarterback under center. Quite a few GMs seem to have Smith Schuster as the #1 ranked receiver in the draft so I think it would be a great pick to give Wenning another weapon opposite Woods. My guess is Brazill's 2016 production was more a product of the quarterback and will be hard pressed to repeat - though he would be a nice slot receiver. The Skins have other needs, but this one needs addressed first.
-------> Original Pick:
1.8 Tennessee Titans - TE Evan Engram - Ole Miss
1.9 New York Giants - QB Patrick Mahomes - Texas Tech
The Giants have their own dilemma, with a few glaring holes that have not been filled through trade or free agency. Fortunately, they have three first round picks with which to work. Cornerback and Quarterback are their top needs. I don't see Janoris Jenkins starting opposite Ramsey and the Giants need need to start mentoring a QB while Palmer is still serviceable. Given the depth of quality corners in this class and with two of the three top-tier quarterbacks already off the board, the Giants will use this pick on Mahomes.
1.10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - TE Evan Engram
First pass, I had the Bucs taking a wide receiver here, but with Taylor Price and Cody Core already on the roster, I now believe they have more pressing needs . While there is a part of me that says they will use their two first round picks on a Left End and Offensive Lineman, I don't think Bryan will be able to resist the chance to take physical freak Engram after the trade of TE Bradie Ewing to the Texans.
1.11 Washington Redskins - OLB T.J. Watt - Wisconsin
With multiple needs and players approaching regression, the Redskins may very well trade down or for player(s) here - maybe from both 1.8 and 1.11. But for the sake of this mock draft, I will assume they make this pick. So many directions they could go with this...but Watt would be a solid pick.
1.12 Indianapolis Colts - WR Mike Williams - Clemson
Positions that I suspect Breck is looking hard at day one are likely wide receiver, safety, cornerback, and defensive end. Per his draft board, wide receiver is ranked highest, which is also my bet for the position he targets first, and of those still available Breck had Mike Williams going earliest - which was probably not a smokescreen. Another option would be to go corner here and hope he is able to grab Godwin or Malone at 1.25.
