Pablo E.’s 2017 SFL Mock Draft, Final, For Real This Time
Talk about last minute mocks!
1.1 New Orleans Saints
QB Mitchell Trubisky, North Carolina
The Saints swapped picks with the GMen but the pick remains the same—Big Mitch looks to be headed to New Orleans as the new face of the franchise. He’s the best QB in the class but hopefully the Saints are able to maximize his potential by pushing his progression with a mentor that isn’t currently on the roster.
1.2 San Diego Chargers
CB Marlon Humphrey, Alabama
Will GM Cook stay put here or will he make yet another deal involving this pick which was acquired from the GMen? He’s made comments about S Eddie Jackson not being the best pick here due to positional value. If he stays put, he may ultimately decide Humphrey manning the slot until he’s polished enough for the outside would be the best choice in the division stacked with speedy wideouts. However, I do expect someone to make a hasty last minute deal to move up.
1.3 Oakland Raiders
DE Myles Garrett, Texas A&M
Garret would be too good to pass up here at a key position where there’s a need. He’s head and shoulders the best defensive end in this class and I can’t imagine him falling passed Oakland who now owns back-to-back picks in the top 5.
1.4 Oakland Raiders
S Eddie Jackson, Alabama
Jackson would immediately start at strong safety for Oakland and it’d be a huge upgrade. His rare speed makes him too enticing to get by GM Barber, especially with the few holes the team currently has on its talented roster.
1.5 Atlanta Falcons
HB James Connor, Pittsburg
Falcons GM Pearce has come out and publicly professed his love for Connor, citing his size and good BTK ability. There’s no reason to overthink it, we can just plug the ex-Panther here.
1.6 Chicago Bears
QB DeShaun Watson, Clemon
QB Eric Ainge hit 31 and the Bears make the most of their star QBs capabilities, placing the responsibility of mentor upon him for a similarly talented Watson. They may not get to draft this high again next year so they decide to secure the future.
1.7 Indianapolis Colts
WR Mike Williams, Clemson
How fortunate are the Colts? Williams takes a small tumble despite his exceptional talent. It’s a bit reminiscent of San Diego’s Michael Thomas’ fall in last year’s draft, though he may be even better overall.
1.8 Washington Redskins
WR JuJu SmithSchuster, USC
Washington surprisingly traded away the uber talented Sam Bradford and set off a bit of a rebuild. SmithSchuster will now try to help former second round QB Keith Wennington progress into the talent he’s shown glimpses of. Wennington has a huge arm and SmithSchuster’s speed can compliment it.
1.9 New York Giants
WR Kenny Golladay, Northern Illinois
Hah, Kenny G is back! Golladay has an elite size/speed combination and should provide newly acquired QB Jordan Palmer with a big target he’s been used to since his championship days with Miami, witch is a good thing for the hot-seat GM.
1.10 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
TE George Kittle, Iowa
Tampa has been liked to Ole Miss TE Evan Engram but Kittle may be better suited for the Bucs offense with his size, tenacity and awareness. He can better help the team in the running game.
1.11 Washington Redskins
TE Evan Engram, Ole Miss
Back-to-back tight ends? Yessir. Wennington needs all the help he can get, and Engram is the best way to do that as the team has their WR1 and WR2 spots satisfied. He should be a rare home-run threat out of the TE position.
1.12 Miami Dolphins
DE Jonathan Allen, Alabama
Allen looks like the second best DE prospect in the draft and the Dolphins GM has expressed a desire to improve at the right end position. He appears to have the size they prefer to go along with very good acceleration.
1.13 San Diego Chargers
QB Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech
The Chargers shopped Big Ben Rothlesberger and apparently has had trouble dealing the mentor-eligible quarterback. So why not put him to work? Mahomes can sit learning behind the QB for two seasons and leave San Diego with the option of moving on from Osweiler or trading the talented youngster for a ransom when he’s finally ready.
1.14 Jacksonville Jaguars
WR Chris Godwin, Penn State
Jags have moved on from their primary WR, Dez Bryant, so they’ll be looking to fill that void to help young QB Winston. Godwin has decent size but his speed is among the best as he has 99/99/99 potential while being just 21.
1.15 New York Giants
OLB TJ Watt, Wisconsin
The hot seat pressure makes the Giants bypass a QB here and electing to grab an impact player like Watt. He’s got all the physical tools and would fit nicely rushing the passer from the OLB position along with former 1st round pick Za’Darius Smith.
1.16 Tennessee Titans
WR Josh Malone, Tennessee
If Malone has a good private workout, he’s going to be a stud near the kind of height for a receiver GM Shapiro prefers. The kid stays home and gets to play early, eventually taking the place of 29-year old star WR Dez Bryant. However, if I were a betting man, the pick is probably dealt to move up—maybe all the way up to 5th overall as the Falcons are shopping the selection.
1.17 Miami Dolphins
CB Marshon Lattimore, Ohio State
Miami traded away CB Owusu-Ansah to the Texans, leaving a spot open on the once vaunted secondary. Lattimore checks every box and has high awareness for a 21-year old, which the Dolphins seem to covet.
1.18 New England Patriots
OLB Matt Milano, Boston College
The Patriots received this pick as a part of the deal for the 4th overall selection. I believe New England would like to get a defensive end here, but I’m not sure there is one worthy of this selection. Milano is the next best thing as he should provide help to the pass rush with his elite burst.
1.19 New York Jets
DT Davon Godchaux, LSU
New York could use some help on the interior of their defensive line and Godchaux is the best prospect at the position in this draft. He should improve the pass rush immediately for the Jets with his rare speed for a DT.
1.20 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Cb Justin Hardee, Illinois
While I believe the Bucs would prefer someone else in this spot, in part because they have good corners already and other holes to fill, I think GM Mellon loves a good corner. Hardee has the kind of upside to change a mind or two.
1.21 Green Bay Packers
S Malik Hooker, Ohio State
Hooker has ideal size and exceptional awareness but may be lacking a bit of speed depending on the skew. However, being fast enough, only 21, and this advanced mentally is enough to tempt the Pack to make him their new starting strong safety.
1.22 Jacksonville Jaguars
DE Dasheon Hall, Texas A&M
There’s a spot open at starting right end for the team and Hall looks like the next best player available. He’s potentially got elite-tier speed for a defensive end and who doesn’t like productive pass rushers?
1.23 Seattle Seahawks
OT Roderick Johnson, Florida State
Stay with the freak theme, Johnson fills the left tackle void for Seattle. He has a great starting point in awareness to boot and will likely be among the best tackles in the SFL in a short time.
1.24 Cleveland Browns
QB Brad Kaaya, Miami
Brohm is 31 and can mentor so now would be a good time to groom the next franchise QB. Kaaya possesses elite arm strength and is just 21, giving him a bit extra time to develop into a future stud.
1.25 Indianapolis Colts
MLB Kendall Beckwith, LSU
Beckwith slides due to teams having their MLB position solidified rather than the lack of talent. He’s got a great first step and long speed, solid awareness, but could use some seasoning on his tackling abilities. He should progress quickly in that department as he will be able to get to the ball often. Veteran Jason Phillips might find himself on the trade block soon.
1.26 Denver Broncos
HB Christian McCafrey, Stanford
The Broncos went a measly 8-8 last season and were pimp slapped twice by the Chiefs in the process. Current starting HB Murray is a season away from regressing so the top running back would probably be a wise choice for Denver here. CMC needs a bit of work on his BTK rating, but has the speed, strength and catching ability to tempt GM Collins late in the 1st.
1.27 Green Bay Packers
CB Tre’Davious White, LSU
Green Bay has invested heavily in the cornerback position in recent years and this would give them one of the most talented quartets in the league, while also providing veteran Jonathan Joseph with something to do this season while being the 5th corner(mentor). White can split time with 28-year-old Amukamara this season and maybe next, and then take over full time from there.
1.28 New York Giants
WR Josh Reynolds, Texas A&M
The Giants double up on wideouts in the 1st, this time selecting the 6’3” Aggies receiver. Reynolds need a bit of grooming but can step in and be productive in his rookie season due to his size/speed combination. Mahomes is going to need targets in the future and the GMen have regressing or about to regress WRs currently on the roster in Benn and newly-acquired Cobb.
1.29 Pittsburg Steelers
DT Jaleel Johnson, Iowa
Defensive tackles Dan Williams and Ziggy Hood are 29 and 30 years old so the position could use some youth, especially one that can rush the passer. Johnson is just that with his exceptional acceleration.
1.30 Pittsburg Steelers
WR John Ross, Washington
WR Carlton Mitchell hits regression next season and the team overall could use a bit more depth at wideout(didn’t they have like 4 plus starters at one point?). Ross is a burner, and a fitting target for the rocket-armed future in sophomore QB Nate Sudfield.
1.31 Seattle Seahawks
CB Shaquille Griffin, UCF
Griffin has good size, speed, awareness and hands. He could step in and be a plus nickel corner until he’s developed enough to take the starting job on the outside. With a good positive skew, he could end up being an excellent pick.
1.32 Indianapolis Colts
CB Teez Tabor, Florida
Colts could use a developmental corner. Tabor is just 21 with good physical tools and time to develop. Judging by the leaked nipple pics from GM Breckheimer, the name Teez fits the team well.
