Draft Analysis
By Kevin Mullendore
Special to sfl-football.com

Not sure how far I will get with this. Will add to it as I have time. But hopefully this proves to be a fairly interesting format. Here is the first four picks:

1.1 QB Mitchell Trubisky, North Carolina | A

Initial Reaction - The worst kept secret of the draft. But it was the right pick, by talent or need.

Around the League - “Congrats getting your franchise QB.” “Rookie QB…Yummy Yum Yum!!”

Analysis - Trubisky may be the safest pick in the draft. Coming into the league with 74AWR is rare and pretty much guarantees him a quick path to the 90AWR level - likely just two to three seasons even without a mentor. Only thing keeping it from an A+ is the fact that is cost the Saints pick 2.2 to move up one spot and ensure they got him.

SFL Comparable - Trubisky is unique. He has the awareness, agility, and acceleration of QB Chandler Harnish (DEN), but otherwise is physically similar to QB Mark Sanchez (NYJ).

Something to Think About - What will Trubisky’s tendency be as a rookie? Last time a quarterback came into the league with statuesque AGI and ACC he was a Scrambler which was a disaster.

1.2 LE Myles Garrett, Texas A&M | B+

Initial Reaction - Somewhat of a surprise by the Chargers. Only AF’s final mock draft correctly called this pick.

Around the League - “What I don’t like about Garrett is the risk of 81 spd.”

Analysis - Garrett is a very good player with potentially elite attributes depending a little on the final skew. But he wasn’t cheap (DE Lawrence + 1.9 + 2.25 for Garrett + Future 1st (PIT) + 3.15 +4.18 ). There will be a lot of pressure on Garrett to perform like a generational talent to prove the value of being the second overall pick.

SFL Comparable - DE Malliciah Goodman (MIN)

Something to Think About - There is a lot of debate about lower-strength, smaller defensive ends perform in a 3-4 defense like San Diego will use this season. Will Garrett excel regardless of scheme?

1.3 CB Marlon Humphrey, Alabama | A+

Initial Reaction - There was little chance that Humphrey made it past the Raiders’ picks at 1.3/1.4.

Around the League - “Nice selections Brad.” “Shhhhhit” “Amazing picks Brad Barber (Raiders)”

Analysis - Humphrey is probably the best defensive player in the draft, with no major physical weaknesses and good awareness. If you want to get picky he doesn’t have great strength or hops, and is not a great tackler. But you would be hard pressed to find a GM in the SFL that did not have Humphrey as their top-ranked corner.

SFL Comparable - Cortez Allen (SF). Humphrey doesn’t have Allen’s strength or tackling ability, but his awareness looks to be about +10. Allen was last season’s DPOY and an MVP candidate!

Something to Think About - Final result of last year’s trade: QB A.J. McCarron + 2.12 (2016) for RG James Carpenter + CB Marlon Humphrey

1.4 WR Mike Williams, Clemson | A-

Initial Reaction - Good player but is he worth the pick?

Around the League - “Nice selections Brad.” “Shhhhhit” “Amazing picks Brad Barber (Raiders)”

Analysis - Mike Williams was highly touted and mocked, and should have a very good career in this league. But with Golladay ranked higher on my board and very comparable receivers such as Josh Malone available toward the end of the round, I don’t consider it a great value pick. Final skews may provide a slightly different perspective.

SFL Comparable - A.J. Green (DEN).

Something to Think About - Where the Raiders’ 2018 1st Round Pick falls could ultimately determine the winner of their trade with the Patriots to secure 1.4 for Williams.

1.5 SS Eddie Jackson, Alabama | B+

Initial Reaction - Jackson definitely has unique speed, quickness, and agility.

Around the League - "Like that from Falcons as well"

Analysis - This was probably either a love it or hate it pick for most people. Those that value the Safety position highly and prioritize speed at the position loved it. Others would never consider taking a Safety this high, especially if he isn't 6'2"+ with awareness in the 70s and great ball skills. The Falcons do already have Chinedum Ndukwe in place to mentor Jackson, which I assume they will do.

SFL Comparable - SS Kevin Byard (NO)

Something to Think About - Eddie Jackson is the first Safety in the history of the SFL to be drafted in the top five.

1.6 QB Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech | A

Initial Reaction - Maybe the rumors about three quarterbacks going in the top-10 were true.

Around the League - "His QB has 6 years on tank
Seems a bit early to start developing one." "Oh, I expected Watson! But it's Mahomes!"

Analysis - It's rare that the Bears are picking this high so they took advantage of it and grabbed their quarterback of the future. While Ainge is already in place to mentor Mahomes, it also gives the Bears a backup quarterback that they desperately needed. By the beginning of the regular season, Mahomes will already be better than current backup Keith Null (who is also making $6m+).

SFL Comparable - Kirk Cousins (TB). Mahomes has a slightly stronger arm than Cousins, but has a few points lessf awareness.

Something to Think About - The Bears were the only pick in the top-10 that was not acquired via trade.

1.7 WR Kenny Golladay, N. Illinois | A+

Initial Reaction - Sad Most mock drafts had Golladay going between 1.8 and 1.11, but some of that seems to have been smokescreens, with hopes that he would fall.

Around the League - "Golladay at 1.7 was a great pick."

Analysis - Golladay was my favorite player in this draft class, so not happy he ended up on the Dolphins. Big, strong, fast receivers are very rare in this league - a couple that are 6'3" and one that is 6'6". He has the size/speed to be a nightmare in the passing game (both deep and contested routes), and the strength/blocking ability to be a real asset in the running game.

SFL Comparable - Darren Waller (DEN). Golladay isn't quite as tall as Waller, but he is equal or better nearly everywhere else.

Something to Think About - Before yesterday's draft, there were just five SFL receivers with 96SPD/96ACC and 60+ STR.

1.8 WR JuJu SmithSchuster, USC | A

Initial Reaction - The last of the three most discussed receivers goes off the board at 1.8.

Around the League - "WR run"

Analysis - Smith Schuster was mocked to go off the board anywhere from 1.5 to 1.12, which is about where similar receivers have been picked in recent years as well. Quite a few GMs seemed to have Smith Schuster as the #1 ranked receiver in the draft so to get him at 1.8 is a really good pick. JuJu gives Wenning another weapon opposite Woods. As mentioned in my mock, the Skins have other needs, but they correctly address this one first.

SFL Comparable - Cordarelle Patterson (CIN). Very similar players, the biggest difference being JuJu starting out with +11CTH and may be more injury-prone.

Something to Think About - Just seven years ago, a similar receiver with rare (at the time) speed named Dez Bryant was made the first overall pick.

1.9 WR Chris Godwin, Penn State | B

Initial Reaction - Real gamble taken by Giants here choosing to go with receiver at 1.9 and hoping Watson lasted until their next pick at 1.15.

Around the League - I think people began to panic about their WRs not dropping.

Analysis - Godwin goes off the board probably a little earlier than most expected (mocked 1.12-1.16), maybe at least in part due to panic? I suspect the Giants were hoping to walk away with a QB, WR, and CB with their three 1st round picks - and to their credit they were successful doing so. Godwin will give the Giants a solid deep threat they just didn't have last season.

SFL Comparable - Jarvis Landry (CLE)

Something to Think About - You have to go back to 2010 to find the last time that four wide receivers were taken in the top-10 of the draft - the only other time it has happened.

1.10 TE George Kittle, Iowa | A

Initial Reaction - As a rookie Kittle will come in at least tied as the fastest Tight End - with a remote possibility of one day seeing 99SPD!

Around the League - "Wow" "That Kittle PW is insane" "Kittle [SPD] will be 91 to 97" "Hey Kittle Kittle, what’s that running open down the middle"

Analysis - George Kittle is an amazing athlete, with potential for speed the league has not yet seen at the position. Still, there are quite a few GMs that would question ever taking a tight end in the top-10 - though Kittle is not the first. He was mocked anywhere from 1.5 to 1.32, possibly the widest range of any player consistently in the first round. History will probably prove this to be a very good pick for the Bucs.

SFL Comparable - Nick Vannett (MIN). As mentioned above, Kittle has a chance to be a very unique player with no close comparables, but Vannett is probably the closest.

Something to Think About - Are the faster Tight Ends of today giving offenses an advantage, or is it offset by the faster linebackers and safeties we are seeing on defense?

1.11 HB James Conner, Pittsburgh | A

Initial Reaction - Conner comes in as the heaviest, strongest halfback in the league.

Around the League - "James Conner at 1.11 is my favorite"

Analysis - Conner has unique weight and strength, and his other physical attributes are better than average for a back of his size. Based off the last couple of drafts and where he was mocked (nearly all had him between 1.5 and 1.Cool, he is also good value for the eleventh overall pick. If there is a concern it would be his low INJ and TGH ratings as obviously he will not be one to shy away from contact!

SFL Comparable - Jeremy Hill (MIA)

Something to Think About - Three of the four 250lb halfbacks in the SFL were drafted in 2016 or 2017.

1.12 LOLB T.J. Watt, Wisconsin | A

Initial Reaction - Once the Bucs didn't select Watt at 1.10, you just knew he would be the Colts' pick!

Around the League - "Watt made it to 12 impressive" "Watt is 1 of my favorite players in the draft" "Watt is so good!" "Stud!"

Analysis - Like several other rookies in this PED-era, Watt comes into the league already a step above the existing elite OLBs. His 63 AWR is also pretty good for a rookie with such physical talent. He was mocked anywhere between 1.6 and 1.12 so this seems about right for him to go. Would have been off the board even soon if OLB was a higher-value and/or need position.

SFL Comparable - Nigel Bradham (NYJ).

Something to Think About - How does this year's 12th-overall OLB Watt (Colts) stack up against last year's 12th-overall OLB Dodd (Titans)?

1.13 CB Tre'Davious White, LSU | A

Initial Reaction - Wondered when some of these talented cornerbacks would starting coming off the board!

Around the League - "White is studly" "The guy I was going to pick at 7 but felt he may drop. He’s a stud" "White was the #1 guy on my board - urgh"

Analysis - I had White and Hardee ranked very close. White has higher awareness by an equal number of points to Hardee's CTH/TAK. Both are 22yrs old and figure to max out on speed, agility, and acceleration. For some GMs, the higher starting awareness would be the deciding factor, while others are very reluctant to draft a corner under 6'. Rather than a coin flip, I'd probably take the 6'1" over the awareness which can be progressed and mentored. But you really can't go wrong either way.

1.14 CB Justin Hardee, Illinois | A+

Around the League - "My plan B great pick"
