Players With Expiring Contracts- Offense
By Bryan Mellon
Special to sfl-football.com

In case anyone needs a refresher, in the offseason we?ll be able to resign 1 player with an expiring contact to a default contract (default according to the age of the player) and have a chance at declaring another player with an expiring contract as match eligible meaning a team would receive draft pick compensation in the following year?s draft if another team wins that player. Another team wins that player by outbidding all other teams and having the previous team decide not to match the highest. If that doesn?t make sense please check out rule 4.07 at this link: http://smashmouth-football.net/lg_rulebook.php?t=1506&skin=lp

In addition to the resign and match eligible options a team has 1 restructure per season. Each GM can earn up to 2 more restructures per season via Activity Points.

Now that I have all that out of the way, here we go:

*Note: I had planned on doing both offensive and defensive players tonight but this took longer than I expected. I?ll do defensive players later

QB?s

Tom Brady- New England Patriots
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1105&skin=lp
2003 Projection: No chance he does not stay with the Patriots.

Jake Delhomme- New Orleans Saints
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1379&skin=lp
2003 Projection: I would imagine he stays with the Saints as their starting QB.

Marc Bulger- St Louis Rams
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1214&skin=lp
2003 Projection: I believe if Bulger was going to be traded it would have happened just before the season started. I think Bulger resigns with the Rams and will give them a great backup in case Kurt Warner gets injured.

RB?s

Curtis Martin- New York Jets
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=918&skin=lp
2003 Projection: I believe the Jets will allow Martin to walk and become a free agent.

James Stewart- Cleveland Browns
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=989&skin=lp
2003 Projection: I believe GM Collins will let Stewart become a free agent mostly due to his age.

Stephen Davis- Washington Redskins
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1324&skin=lp
2003 Projection: (I have some insight) Davis will most likely be designated as the Redskins match eligible player.

Dorsey Levens- New York Giants
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=653&skin=lp
2003 Projection: The Giants will allow Levens to become a free agent due to his age and already having their starting RB in Tiki Barber.

Tyrone Wheatley- Oakland Raiders
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1202&skin=lp
2003 Projection: Even though the Raiders are having a good season and Wheatley is performing I think the Raiders will allow him to become a free agent.

FB?s

Lorenzo Neal- Cincinnati Bengals
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=85&skin=lp
2003 Projection: He is a FB who will be 33 years old which means he?ll be allowed to walk.

TE?s

Tony Gonzalez- Atlanta Falcons
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=439&skin=lp
2003 Projection: The Falcons gave a king?s ransom for Gonzalez so this is a no-brainer; Gonzalez will be resigned or restructured by the Falcons.

Chad Lewis- Philadelphia Eagles
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=654&skin=lp
2003 Projection: He will be a 32 year old TE next year which should make him a free agent.

Mark Bruener- Pittsburgh Steelers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1476&skin=lp
2003 Projection: He will be a free agent who will get some interest from a couple different teams during free agency next year.

WR?s

Randy Moss- Minnesota Vikings
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1664&skin=lp
2003 Projection: He will be resigned or restructured by the Vikings. This is close to a no-brainer. The only other option I could see if the Vikings offering to trade Moss for a truckload of 1st round picks.

Jimmy Smith- Carolina Panthers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=875&skin=lp
2003 Projection: Due to his age it?s doubtful GM Breck resigns him but Smith will be a target of multiple teams even with his advanced age.

Joe Horn- New Orleans Saints
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1390&skin=lp
2003 Projection: While resigning or declaring 31 year old WR?s as match eligible free agents isn?t popular it would not surprise me to see Horn stay with the Saints.

Ike Hilliard- New York Giants
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=809&skin=lp
2003 Projection: I believe he will be re-signed by the Giants unless another teams offers Hilliard a deal and GM Mendes decided to accept a deal worth a 2nd or maybe even a 1st round pick.

Terry Glenn- Green Bay Packers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1016&skin=lp
2003 Projection: I believe the Packers will resign Glenn.

OT?s

Walter Jones- Seattle Seahawks
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1441&skin=lp
2003 Projection: Even though Jones has had a horrible year thus far (8 sacks allowed versus just 29 pancakes) I believe the Seahawks and GM Rock resign him.

Tra Thomas- Philadelphia Eagles
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=670&skin=lp
2003 Projection: The Eagles have to find a way to resign Thomas in order to protect their franchise QB Donavan McNabb.

Mark Tauscher- Green Bay Packers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1040&skin=lp
2003 Projection: While Tauscher is good and still young (only 25 years of age) I believe the Packers will be forced to let him test the free agency waters.

Mike Rosenthal- New York Giants
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=824&skin=lp
2003 Projection: I believe Rosenthal and the Giants is a similar situation as Tauscher and the Packers. I believe the Giants will allow Rosenthal to test free agency.

C?s

Jeremy Newberry- San Francisco 49?ers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=762&skin=lp
2003 Projection: While the position of center might not be real important in Madden I believe the 49?ers need to find a way to resign Newberry.

Jeff Christy- Tampa Bay Bucs
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=262&skin=lp
2003 Projection: Even at 34 years of age I believe Christy will gain interest by a team or two in 2003 however he won?t be resigned by the Bucs.

OG?s

Alan Faneca- Pittsburgh Steelers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1480&skin=lp
2003 Projection: At just 26 years of age, Faneca is an elite guard and I believe the Steelers have to find a way to resign him.

Jon Jansen- Washington Redskins
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1334&skin=lp
2003 Projection: Again, I have some insight here, lol. The Redskins will more than likely chose Janes as their re-sign player next season.

Brian Waters- San Diego Chargers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=466&skin=lp
2003 Projection: Waters is another elite guard and I expect him to be resigned by the Chargers.

Mike Wahle- Green Bay Packers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1041&skin=lp
2003 Projection: A good blocker with age on his side (just 25 years old) but he is not strong. I think the Packers allow him to become a free agent due to other players and needs.

K?s

Ryan Longwell- Green Bay Packers
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=1027&skin=lp
2003 Projection: This year has proven a reliable kicker is needed but I don?t think the Packers are in position to resign 28 year old Longwell.

Martin Gramatica- Tampa Bay Bucs
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?year=2002&id=269&skin=lp
2003 Projection: Gramatica is going through a tough season (just 13 for 17 for a FG rate of 76%) and I don?t see the Bucs resigning him.
