Potential Rookies of the Year- through 15 weeks
By Bryan Mellon

Well our inaugural SFL season is winding down and in a couple short weeks the playoffs will begin. I thought it would be a good time to take a look at players who might take away some hardware at the end of the year:

Offensive Rookie of the Year Candidates:

LT Levin Jones- Cincinnati Bengals | http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=79&skin=lp
78 Pancakes vs 2 Sacks Allowed
The fact Jones has only allowed 2 sacks while leading all rookie offensive lineman in pancakes with 78 is amazing when you find out the Bengal QB?s don?t have the highest AWR. Jon Kitna leads the group wit 77 AWR followed by Gus Freotte and 73 then newly acquired Jesse Palmer with just 60 AWR. (All 3 QB?s have seen time.) Jones set a career high pancake total of 10 in week 15 vs the Cleveland Browns.

WR Andre? Davis- Cleveland Browns | http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=215&skin=lp
65 Rec | 1142 Yards | 8 TD?s | 13 Drops
Davis has had at least 100 yards receiving in six of the Browns 15 games thus far. Five of his 13 drops came within the first two weeks of the season. We?ll see how things go in the final two weeks but he is a big reason the Browns are eyeing an AFC North divisional title. Davis?s best game (arguably) was in week two versus the chiefs. He caught 4 passes for 134 yards, 2 TD?s including one which went for 88 yards. He did however have 3 drops that game.

RB Clinton Portis- Denver Broncos | http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=192&skin=lp
1542 Yards Rushing | 11 TD?s | 5.6 Yards Per Carry | 103 Yards Receiving
Most eyes will head toward Portis when talk of an offensive rookie of the year award is mentioned as well they should. I do point out though, the Broncos are a long shot to make the playoffs so this will probably have Portis lose a couple rookie of the year votes. Portis?s best day was in week 5 vs the Ravens when he rushed 24 times for 162 yards and 2 TD?s.

QB Drew Brees- Tennessee Titans | http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=368&skin=lp
386 Attempts | 182 Completions | 47 % Comp Rate | 2827 Yards Passing | 17 TD?s | 21 Int?s | 63.9 QBR
Bress is going to be a beast for a long, long time. He?s already at a 92 THP rating as well as a 92 THA rating with 80 AWR. His AWR will increase quickly and Brees will be with the SFL eleiete QB?s very shortly. While he?s done admirable it?s not (in my opinion) going to be enough to top Broncos RB Clinton Portis, Bengals OT Levi Jones or the Browns WR Andre? Davis for a rookie of the year nod though. Brees?s best day was in week 3 vs the Giants when he went 17 for 40 for a comp rate of 42 %, 369 yards passing, 3 TD?s , 1 int and a QBR of 90.5.

Defensive Rookie of the Year Candidates:

MLB Will Witherspoon- Kansas City Chiefs | http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=1102&skin=lp 80 Tackles | 8 Tackles For Loss | 2 Sacks | 1 Forced Fumble | 1 Fumble Recovery | 2 Int?s
Smith recorded double digit tackles against the divisional rival Oakland Raiders in week 9. He?s been a big part of keeping the Chiefs within the playoff race.

LE Raheem Brock- Indianpolis Colts | http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=476&skin=lp
37 Tackles | 8 Tackles For Loss | 12 Sacks | 1 Forced Fumble | 1 Safety
Brock has done it all for the Colts. The Colts are one of the favorites to win the SFL championship and Brock will play a significant role if that occurs. Brock has recorded 2 or more sacks in a single game three times this far. Week 1 saw his most dominate performance where he had 4 tackles & 4 sacks versus rookie QB Patrick Ramsey and the Texans.

LE Julius Peppers- Carolina Panthers | http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=1085&skin=lp
49 Tackles | 11 Tackles For Loss | 10 Sacks | 1 Fumble Recovery
Peppers is going to be a force for a long time to come. He?s already left his mark during his rookie season by earnig double digits in Tackles for Loss and Sacks.

CB Yohance Scott- Miami Dolphins | http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=616&skin=lp
Yeah, I didn?t know who this guys was either but all he?s done so far is lead the lead in int?s and provide some stellar defense.
47 Tackles | 5 Tackles For Loss | 1 Sacl | 6 Int?s | 101 Int Yards | 1 Defensive TD
Scott?s best game came in week 2 versus the Vikings where Scott had 5 tackles. 1 sack and 2 int?s.

Currently my vote for offensive rookie of the year goes to Clinton Portis but I could be swayed to change my vote depending on which teams make the playoffs. The Browns WR Andre? Davis is a close second to me.

On the defensive side my current vote goes to the surprisingly CB Yohance Scott of the Dolphins. This 6?3? CB has a very brought future here in the SFL.
