2002 Review of SFLTeam Playbook Usage

With the idea of limiting a certain playbook (Rams) seems to be a topic every season or two I thought I?d do a review of playbook usage during the SFL?s inaugural 2002 season. I?m going into this article with the idea we?ve seen more playbook used this season in SFL than in most leagues.

Before I get into it, let?s take a look at some stats courtesy of our Film Room that might surprise some people:

Passing Info (I only looked at book with 100 or more passing attempts)

Redskins book
1st in QB rating, which I personally think is huge with a QB rating of 110.7
16 TD?s vs just 3 Int?s
2nd in comp rate of 59.6 %

Steelers book
2nd in QB rating with 104.2

Chiefs book
1st in comp rate of 62.6 %
3rd in QB rating with 97.5

Colts book
1st in yards per attempt with 8.8

West Coast book
TD 32 to just 8 Int?s
Great QB rating with 91.5

Rams (as expected )
Most attempts with 4051
Most completions with 2048
Most yards with 31,937
2nd in TD?s with 208
1st in Int?s with 157
2nd in sacks with 336

Broncos (mostly as expected)
2nd most attempts with 3911
2nd most completions with 1917
1st in TD?s with 215
2nd in Int?s with 141
Most sacks allowed with 377

I?m surprised by the Broncos book having more passing TD?s than the Rams with less pass attempts.

I?m also surprised by the Broncos book allowing more QB sacks than the Rams book even though there were less pass attempts.

Rushing Info (I only looked at book with 100 or more rushing attempts)

Broncos
Most rush attempts with 4202
Most rushing yards with 17,950
Most TD?s with 105
Most fumbles with 61
4th in avg per rush with 4.2

Rams
2nd in rush attempts with 3035
2nd in rushing yards with 12,253
2nd in TD?s with 93
2nd in fumbles with 35

Saints
Best avg per rush with 4.6

Pass Balanced
2nd in avg per rush with 4.4

Chiefs
Best TD % with 3.8

Post research shows: (excuse me for my math as I sort of went quick with this part)

The 12 playoffs teams used the Rams offensive playbook 30% of the time during the regular season.

The 12 playoffs teams used the Broncos offensive playbook 29% of the time during the regular season.

So, this means 59% of the 12 playoffs teams regular season games used one of two offensive playbooks (Rams or Broncos)

During the playoffs the Rams offensive book was used 45% of the time.

During the playoffs the Broncos offensive book was used 27% of the time.

So, almost 4/3's (around 72 % really) of the playoffs games saw teams using the Rams or the Broncos offensive playbooks.

During the regular season the 12 playoff teams used the Bears defensive book 41% of the time.

During the playoffs the Bears defensive book was used 36% of the time.

The most frequently used offensive book (Rans) as well as the most frequently used defensive book (Bears) were both used by the SFL Champion St Louis Rams in the championship game. The two books were used in all possible scenarios but one by the Rams this season.
