1.
QB Carson PalmerThis has to be the safest mock pick of the draft. Not only is Palmer the best player in the draft at the league's most important position, but the Cardinals just traded away last year's starting QB in David Carr.
2.
QB Byron LeftwichThe top of this draft is flooded with QB needy teams. It's unlikely that any team that has multiple 1st found picks (like Detroit does) will be able to feel comfortable waiting into the mid 1st to draft their guy. Leftwich has everything you would want in a franchise rookie QB.
3.
QB Rex GrossmanWithout a QB in this league, you're going to have a very difficult time winning. WRs, RBs, DBs, etc are all replaceable, but nothing can dramatically shift your team's likelihood of winning like a QB does. If Dallas passes on a QB here, they will be another year behind the curve in obtaining and developing a rookie QB.
4.
WR Andre JohnsonBuffalo traded Drew Bledsoe to the Broncos to obtain this pick. They were likely hoping that one of the top 3 QBs fell to them. Them's the chances ya take. They have two other 1st rounders and may address QB later on. For now they take the BPA in Johnson. If they can get a competent QB, Johnson could wreak havoc on the AFC East.
5.
CB Nnamdi AsomughaThe Jaguars need a QB, just like everybody else in the top 5. Same situation as the Bills, they probably choose not to reach here. They have the 9th pick and may target QB Kyle Boller there. Outside of QB selections, teams should be targeting athletic freaks, which is exactly what Asomugha is.
6.
RE Ty Warren The Bills traded two 2nds and WR Northcutt to obtain 1.16 for the purpose of flipping that pick for QB David Carr, a 2nd and a 3rd round pick. The Browns are the first team that is not in need of a QB, which allows them to take any player they want. There are many needs on this team despite finishing 8-8 last year. DE is not the biggest need, but how do you pass on a 6'5", 300lb, 86 SPD, 73 STR, 79 AGI, 84 ACC DE? He will obviously be moved to LE and end Jamal Lewis's career.
7.
WR Tyrone CalicoThe Steelers have an okay QB in Tommy Maddox. They also have the Bus on the ground and with Hines Ward and Plaxico Burress you would think they would have had a better offense last year. Perhaps jumpstarting that with Calico would help out. Plaxico is talented but expensive and Hines Ward is a big name but not all that impactful.
8.
RB Musa SmithThe Vikings lost QB Daunte Culpepper in week 8 with an injury. At that time they were 3-4, which certainly would not have put them on the mark to compete with the Packers who finished 12-4. With Culpepper and Moss, the team HAS to do more. It will be interesting to see how active they were in FA. If I'm Minnesota, I'm going offense here. Try to shut down Moss, Culpepper AND my run game.
9.
QB Kyle BollerIt was a risk to hope that nobody traded up to scoop up Boller. He's clearly the #4 QB in this draft, although some appear to be high on that Chris Simms guy who has no AWR or THA. If you're packing something huge but can't figure out how to use it, what good is it?
10.
MLB E.J. HendersonRock is like the Al Davis of SFL. It's all about combine numbers with him. He will draft the most raw ass player, but develop him into a stud all the same. It's tempting to mock a Kicker to him, or someone like WR Kevin Walter or WR Kassim Osgood. I'm sure he is eyeballing them for later. Henderson was the selection here just out of sheer cluelessness as to wtf Rock likes. Rock, who you picking?
11.
WR Anquan BoldinThe Cardinals have 10 picks in the first 2 rounds. Let that shit sink in. Hopefully they draft better than the real life Browns or they be fucked, homie. The team is clearly going to be built back up. They got Palmer at #1 and need someone for him to throw to. How cool would it be for the team to have two real-life Cardinals with their first 2 picks? I would hope Arizona was aggressive in FA in getting some OL to protect their franchise QB, yes?
12.
MLB Angelo CrowellThis team is actually pretty good. They should have done better last year and suspect they will this year. Their offensive skill positions look pretty good, so perhaps they address the defensive side of the ball. I would imagine LB & secondary would be areas of interest for Brady Tinnin. LB could be the higher need since nobody in the division can throw and if Ty Warren doesn't break Jamal Lewis's legs, maybe Crowell will.
13.
CB Marcus TrufantSo they got no QB after they struck out at the top of the round and couldn't get Kyle Boller at this pick. It's too damn early (by like 6 rounds) for the Chris Simms trash performance. That whole family is shit. So with Eric Moulds, Andre Johnson and Travis Henry (if you don't like him I'll take him - Bills fan) and no QB, I think the play here is defense. Try to keep it close and hope for a playmaker to make a big play. They don't have anybody opposite Antoine Winfield, and Trufant is the most pro-ready CB in the draft IMO.
14.
WR Charles RogersThe Dolphins traded for Tim Couch and all it cost them was swapping 1st and 3rd round picks. The team could really use a WR for him to throw to and that's Rogers. Since no OL have come off the board by this point that's another avenue to explore but I'm not blown away by any of them. While we're at it, please move Jason Taylor to LE. What was the previous guy thinking?
15.
CB Charles TillmanThe Falcons could really use a WR but the next tier of WRs would probably be a stretch right here, unless you don't value height as some do. Someone like Bobby Shaw would be appealing to those folks. The Falcons OL isn't bad and I don't think Kerney is an issue. CB may be the way to go for them.
16.
RT Brett WilliamsThe Cardinals landed Carson Palmer and Anquan Boldin with their first two 1st rounders, there are some DEs that have fallen but Vanden Bosch is very good and a RE this early would be silly. Also some RBs out there but I don't mind Shipp for them. OL seems to be a good choice to protect these new skill players.
17.
WR David TyreeJudging by Brad Barber's trade block, I'm surprised he hasn't tried trading this pick for a top 10 1st rounder. Or maybe he has? OL is definitely an area they could address and so is DE. I really think those 2 spots are a priority here, but they literally have no WRs to pair with their new franchise QB.
18.
RE Osi UmenyioraThe only thing better than this draft (despite not getting a QB) was if I had the Bills. WR Andre Johnson, CB Marcus Trufant and now Umenyiora. 3 studs to build around. Just like the previous pick, with no QB you need to build a strong defense to hold you over until you can obtain one. Chris Simms should not be an option.
19.
RT Jordan GrossThe run on OT begins far later than it should. Gross is pretty damn good for the 2nd OL off the board. The Jaguars roster is pretty bare and they need to protect their new franchise QB Kyle Boller.
20.
ROLB Bradie JamesThis roster is in pretty great shape. It looks more win-now mode due to the age of some of the players. It's tough to find a hole on this team. I was thinking LE could be an area to upgrade but Simeon Rice could flip there. If he doesn't, let me know and I'll take him off your hands. I'm not blown away by the OLBs in this class, but it looks like an area of weakness on this strong team.
21.
CB Andre WoolforkThe offensive skill positions look good, but their CBs are definitely in need of a significant upgrade. A few CBs have already come off the board, but Woolfork is a pretty good CB. He doesn't have blazing speed, but with his 6'1" frame he's pretty fast and will get a bit faster through rookie progression.
22.
RB Willis McGaheeI previously said I don't mind Shipp and I don't. But if McGahee falls this far it would be pretty difficult to pass on him. The good thing about having a team full of holes and rebuilding is that you can remain flexible and take what the draft gives you. One question I have is how the hell they plan to keep 10 rookies after their initial contract expires?
23.
SS Mike DossBreck is looking for WR, CB, S, and OL help. Jordan Gross would have been the pick but he goes 4 spots earlier. It's hard to find an athletic Safety in this league and Breck happily takes the #1 Safety in the draft.
24.
CB Drayton FlorenceThe Chargers were licking their chops for Doss but their team isn't ready to compete so it won't change a whole lot for them right now. Florence isn't bad but he could be a serviceable starting CB for a while.
25.
CB Terence NewmanThe Giants overpaid for an old WR Rod Smith and by the sounds of it, missed out on free agency. When you start looking for other teams to sign FAs before you get your hand in there, it signals that you're playing with a short deck. The team looks like it's in win-now mode and they're short on CBs. Florence was their guy and after being snubbed they feel the pressure to fill the spot and grab Newman. Romeo is looking to move up and publicly shopping for a CB.
26.
LT Kwame HarrisIt's an underwhelming TE class, the CBs are dried up and they missed out on their starting OT when he was scooped up a few picks before. Harris is not a bad consolation prize but obviously not the first choice.
27.
RE Tyler BraytonIt seems so wrong to me that I haven't called his name yet. Knowing Rock he will bypass a need to go with a great value and that is Brayton. Brayton could easily be taken in the top half of the draft yet he almost falls to round 2? Unlikely on draft day.
28.
RB Larry JohnsonHow has this team not forfeited all future 1st round draft picks? The first thing I noticed when I checked out the Tom Brady-led Patriots roster was their lack of any legitimate RB threat. Larry Johnson could certainly change that. He may not be a huge gamebreaker, but he will surely make it harder for teams to sell out to stop the pass knowing you will struggle to beat them on the ground.
29.
LT Wade SmithI was initially thinking Tyler Brayton here, but the Ravens run a 3-4 defense. Makes me think that other teams probably do but I don't have the time to tell you what to do so give me a break. Baltimore signed Terry Glenn and there really aren't any other WRs worth taking here. Jeff Blake won't be able to develop a raw rookie WR. So they address their OL to keep their inherited run game running on all cylinders. But since Madden hates Norbert, he will probably be a bust.
30.
MLB Nick BarnettThe Dolphins shipped off Zach Thomas to the Giants this off-season and have a gaping hole at MLB. Barnett is not a sexy pick here, but he is damn sure pro ready with 76 AWR and 95 TAK. He will be a 100 tackle guy right away.
31.
WR Jon OlingerIt's only crazy if it doesn't work. The Colts look like they need some CB help. I'm not in love with any of the guys left. Obviously what the Colts did last year worked, right? They made it to the Super Bowl after all. If I'm the Colts and I have Peyton Manning, I'm going to find some crazy talented but raw WR and force feed him until he develops and dominates. There are others more physically talented in this draft, but even more raw.
32.
RB Chris BrownI like RB here as the 49ers have 32-year-old Garrison Hearst toting the rock right now. There isn't a ton of talent left that jumps off the page, but Brown is someone I'm probably higher on than most.
