PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | QB Carson Palmer | I don't think there is any other way the Cardinals are going to go with this pick. Palmer looks like a perennial pro bowler from the get go and Tyler isn't one to pass on such talent. |
1.02 | | QB Byron Leftwich | This is where things get interesting. There is a serious consideration that Brad Barber will have to make between Leftwich and Rex Grossman. In the end, I think he likes Leftwich's attributes and nabs him with this pick. |
1.03 | | WR Andre Johnson | I know most people are mocking a quarterback to me, but I don't know if I can pass up the talent of Andre Johnson at 1.03. He'll be a stud and once the Cowboys find a quarterback, he'll be a league leader. |
1.04 | | QB Rex Grossman | The Bills shocked the world by trading Drew Bledsoe to the Broncos (in a controversial move for Denver). They may try to shore up their defense here, but I think when push comes to shove they take the last starting caliber quarterback and will go defense later in the first round. |
1.05 | | CB Nnamdi Asomugha | I'm pretty sure that the Jaguars are going to be forced to go defense first with the top three quarterbacks already off the board. While I don't necessarily like everything I see about Asomugha, his height will get him drafted early. |
1.06 | | RE Ty Warren | The Browns are likely going to be drooling at Warren's weight paired with his athleticism. He's the type of player that GM Tom Collins has succeeded with in the past and will likely be a Brown. |
1.07 | | CB Marcus Trufant | This is where things start to get a little bit dicey. Pittsburgh could go in a lot of different directions, but when push comes to shove, they'll likely go with the easy selection and take a cornerback. |
1.08 | | WR Tyrone Calico | One mock draft had the Vikings taking a running back, but I don't see that happening with seven already on the roster. Adding another threat across from Randy Moss would be an interesting move and Calico seems likely to be coveted early. |
1.09 | | MLB E.J. Henderson | While Kyle Boller may be a serious consideration for the Jaguars at this juncture, I feel like they've got to continue building their defense and Henderson looks like a bonafide defender for the middle of the defense. |
1.10 | | ROLB Alonzo Jackson | Rock always hones in on super athletic freaks and Jackson looks to fit the bill. It's quite possible he's gone by this point, but seems like the most "Rock" pick available. |
1.11 | | WR David Tyree | With a new quarterback in the saddle, I'm sure the Cardinals are going to be looking for new studs for him to throw to. With both Andre Johnson and Tyrone Calico off the board, Tyree looks like the best player to develop. |
1.12 | | MLB Angelo Crowell | The Bengals need an identity on defense and my gut tells me that Angelo Crowell will be the player to give them that identity. The offense looks like it should be fine, so shoring up the defense is important. |
1.13 | | CB Charles Tillman | I haven't heard his name mentioned much, but I feel like Charles Tillman might be the player everyone is coveting that we haven't heard much about. Buffalo is in good position to take him at this juncture. |
1.14 | | RT Brett Williams | He might not be the best offensive lineman in the draft, but his high athleticism + 93 strength and decent blocking attributes will get him drafted early and the Panthers seem like a perfect fit. |
1.15 | | SS Mike Doss | It's a pity that the best safety in the draft appears to be Mike Doss, but the Falcons desperately need to improve their secondary. Doss appears the first step in that, but it may still take a couple seasons. |
1.16 | | CB Andre Woolfolk | Now, it's going with best player available for the Cardinals. We all know that Tyler struggles not drafting cornerbacks, so Woolfolk might seem like the best fit at this spot. |
1.17 | | WR Kassim Osgood | At this point, you have to wonder if the Lions were wishing they hadn't drafted Leftwich at 1.02 and taken Andre Johnson, with Kyle Boller still on the clock. Osgood is raw, but could make for a tall target down the line. |
1.18 | | LOLB Boss Bailey | This is a gut call, and mostly based on a good skew for Bailey. If Bailey skews up, he's an excellent linebacker. If he doesn't, he's pedestrian. But he fits a need in Buffalo and might be the safer pick than an Eddie Moore. |
1.19 | | WR Charles Rogers | It's crazy to think how many teams have multiple picks in the first round (ARZ, JAX, BUF). Jacksonville, after spending time to improve their defense, will turn to offense and grab a tall receiver. |
1.20 | | RE Osi Umenyiora | While Umenyiora's awareness is super low, there is common belief that it's not needed in defensive linemen. So Tampa Bay takes Osi and boasts an offensive line with Simeon Rice, Anthony McFarland, Warren Sapp and Osi Umenyiora. Wow. |
1.21 | | MLB Nick Barnett | How the Saints made the playoffs, we'll never know. What we do know is that they desperately need a MLB and Nick Barnettt is the last of the players that look worth taking in the first round at the position. |
1.22 | | HB Musa Smith | Someone has to put a stop to Tyler, he's out of control! Musa Smith is the newest addition to the Cardinals and it rounds out the Arizona defense, once they're able to build an offensive line (maybe in the second round). |
1.23 | | LG Kris Dielman | Breck likes to make his teams sturdy, so I wouldn't be surprised if he doubled down on two offensive linemen in this draft. Kris Dielman looks like the type of player he would target and is decent value at this juncture. |
1.24 | | WR Bethel Johnson | The Chargers went all in last year and came up short. This year they're trying to retool but do have to start looking at the long term plan. They need better receivers, so Bethel Johnson may be a good fit. |
1.25 | | FS Bryan Scott | If the Giants have one weakness it's depth in their secondary. While Scott's awareness is drastically low, his athletic ability may make him a target for Romeo late in the first round. |
1.26 | | FS Terrence Holt | I think the Dolphins will be targeting Scott with their pick, but with him coming off the board a pick earlier, pushing the focus to Terrence Holt makes sense. Daren Roberts may be new on the job, but he seems to have a solid plan. |
1.27 | | CB Drayton Florence | We've got a bit of a run on secondary players here. The big problem for Seattle is there aren't many athletic freaks left in this draft. Florence, with a good skew, could be one though, so he's worth a look. |
1.28 | | DT Aubrayo Franklin | We haven't seen many defensive linemen taken yet (it's a pretty weak group), but Aubrayo Franklin may fit in well in New England. His low awareness won't be a concern due to his position, so the rest of his attributes balance out nicely. |
1.29 | | RE Tyler Brayton | The Ravens made a deeper push than most expected last season and if they want to success to continue they need to add some depth to their team. Brayton looks like the best remaining defensive lineman available so he's a must need pick here for Baltimore. |
1.30 | | MLB Terry Pierce | There aren't many MLBs in this years draft, so if you're in desperate need of one, you're going to have to reach a little bit. Daren Roberts will recognize this and reach on this pick. |
1.31 | | CB Rashean Mathis | With a good skew, Mathis could become a very good player, which is all you can hope for when you're picking 1.31. The Colts lost the Super Bowl because they couldn't stop the pass. Mathis should shore that up. |
1.32 | | LOLB Eddie Moore | While this pick shouldn't belong to the 49ers, they've been stonewalled in trading the pick, so they have to take the best player available. Moore fits a position on their team and they'll take him |
