PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | QB Philip Rivers | The Titans benched Drew Brees all season and then traded him away to the Browns. It seems apparent at this juncture that Tennessee is going to draft a QB and word on the street is that Rivers is the guy they wanted all along. |
1.02 | | QB Ben Roethlisberger | There have been some rumors that Dallas will once again pass on a quarterback and go with a stud linebacker, but at this juncture, I think that's unlikely. The GM who drafts Big Ben will need to put some activity points into him, so the Cowboys are a great fit. |
1.03 | | LT Tyson Clabo | Arizona has agreed to terms to move up to the third overall pick and you know it has to be because they have their eyes on someone. Some may think it's a linebacker or a wide receiver, but with Carson Palmer continuing to grow, don't be surprised if GM Tyler Richardson pulls the strings on Tyson Clabo, the most athletic tackle on the draft. |
1.04 | | LOLB Karlos Dansby | Once again, the Cardinals will be looking to add generational talent and I think Dansby may fit the bill for them. While I doubt GM Richardson would enjoy picking an OLB this early, Dansby's freakish attributes outline him as a player worth grabbing early in the draft. |
1.05 | | QB Eli Manning | The Jaguars just missed out on drafting a QB last year, but with the Cardinals owning two picks ahead of them, they get the QB that is left of the main three. In this scenario, Eli Manning becomes the face of the franchise and will face his brother twice a year. |
1.06 | | WR Roy Williams | Roy Williams is the poor man's version of Andre Johnson, selected third overall last year. I sense the Lions will want to add a big threat for their sophomore quarterback, Byron Leftwich. Hopefully Williams does more for them than he did in real life. |
1.07 | | WR Michael Clayton | This Vikings team looks like they should be much better than they are, so I wouldn't be surprised if Minnesota decided to add another tall wide receiver threat for their team. Clayton may not look all that great, but will go earlier than expected due to his size. |
1.08 | | HB Steven Jackson | GM Gary Cohen did what all of us would not suggest, and that was count his draft prospects before they hatched. He does seem prepared to let Eddie George walk however, and may hope for a positive skew on SJax, since that was his "original plan". |
1.09 | | ROLB Teddy Lehman | The Bears are likely better than their draft position makes them out to be, so going best available player at this position would be best for them. They'll likely take Lehman and turn him into a stud next to Brian Urlacher for seasons to come. |
1.10 | | CB DeAngelo Hall | GM Nathan Jones has gone on the record about not caring about height at cornerback, as long as they're athletic and Hall definitely fits that bill. For a team that desperately needs to update their secondary, Hall is a great first step. |
1.11 | | CB Joey Thomas | Almost every single first round we start to see a bit of a run on secondary players. I think the early teens is where we will see it as the "elite" players are off the board, but quite a few starting-caliber players will be available. |
1.12 | | TE Benjamin Watson | Buffalo is going to need to continue to develop Rex Grossman and getting him a fantastic receiving tight end has to be on the list for this offseason. Benjamin Watson looks like he can start from day one and should provide a handful of TDs every season. |
1.13 | | RT Robert Gallery | Judging off GM Rock Hewko's drafting history, he likes his offensive linemen, big, fast and strong. Gallery checks all the boxes and should instantly be able to start for a Seattle team that has to wonder if this is the year they make a jump. |
1.14 | | MLB Jonathan Vilma | Vilma is going to go off the board and eventually and may turn out to be this year's Nick Barnett. His high awareness means that GM Leonard Jones can play him immediately in the middle of his defense as he tries to keep his offense on the field. |
1.15 | | CB Chris Gamble | This is things start to get a little dodgy for the Cardinals, as I feel the majority of the players they feel they "need to have" are already off the board (two to them already). I considered RG Shawn Andrews here, but I don't think he has attributes that Tyler would like, whereas Gamble at least has some height on him. |
1.16 | | QB Matt Schaub | GM Anthony Cepparulo is known for waiting until the last minute to decide who to draft and my gut tells me that will lead him to drafting Matt Schaub. Schaub becomes a "safe" option for the Chargers who desperately need a good QB on their roster. |
1.17 | | WR Larry Fitzgerald | How wonderful would it be to hear "And Tony Romo with the deep bomb to Larry Fitzgerald!" It may happen in Tampa Bay. Based on their attributes...not that often, but it may happen every once in a while once the veterans retire. |
1.18 | | RE Jason Babin | The likely answer here is that the Redskins trade out of the first round, just as GM Bryan Mellon does every year. But they do need help on the defensive line and Babin may appeal to Mellon due to his high acceleration. |
1.19 | | CB Dunta Robinson | At this juncture, people are going to draft partly on name, hoping for a good skew. The Steelers will likely want to improve their secondary and Dunta Robinson will look like a tempting name for them to take a gamble on. |
1.20 | | LT Nat Dorsey | Ever the loud critic, GM Darryl Breckheimer has spent more time zooming in on pictures of Tom Collins' nipple this offseason than actually studying the draft class. In the end, I think he opts for an athletic offensive tackle for his offensive line. |
1.21 | | MLB Landon Johnson | The Browns finally got their quarterback, but they still need to change up their defense. At this juncture, Landon Johnson may fit as a great defender in the middle of their squad, who with a good skew and some progression, could be a pro bowler. |
1.22 | | CB Nathan Jones | GM Jason Arnold frequently looks for great secondary players in the draft and Nathan Jones (not the Saints GM) is a special talent with 97 SPD and 99 ACC. Of course, those could skew down, but still make him one of the fastest cornerbacks over six feet in the league. |
1.23 | | CB Derrick Strait | Cincinnati had a run of bad luck the second half of the 2003 season, but will likely look to upgrade an overall solid team in this draft. Secondary almost makes the most sense and Strait would fit in well with the rest of the team. |
1.24 | | WR Johnnie Morant | The Chiefs have a great offense, but it is a tad one-dimensional. Morant might not be ready to play right away, but with some development, he could become quite the threat with Michael Vick throwing dimes to him week in and week out. |
1.25 | | DT Marcus Tubbs | Breckheimer once again finds himself in a quandry. I almost mocked CB Greg Brooks to him, but I'm going to side with DT Marcus Tubbs for his pick. I think he checks the boxes of what the Panthers may need in the middle of their defensive line. |
1.26 | | FS Sean Taylor | No, you're not reading this wrong, the Titans will soon own pick 1.26 (from the 49ers). I think GM Gary Cohen may get a little sentimental with this pick and select Sean Taylor, despite the lack of quality attributes. Who can really blame him? |
1.27 | | SS Madieu Williams | New England is a team ready to win now and I think Madieu Williams is a great fit for their organization. He's one of the faster safeties in the league and should play well within their defensive scheme. Don't be surprised if he goes in this range. |
1.28 | | CB Greg Brooks | The well is a little dry for the type of talent that GM Kevin Mullendore typically likes to select, but I think that Brooks has the potential to be the type of player Mullendore would like to see in New York. He's worth a shot, at least. |
1.29 | | RG Shawn Andrews | Andrews may have top ten talent, but is likely to drop because of the position he plays. If there are two players I would expect to drop in the draft that shouldn't, it's Andrews and Vilma. I think Andrews goes here and the rest of the AFC East regrets it. |
1.30 | | ROLB Demorrio Williams | Detroit continues to add some talent on both sides of the ball and rolls the dice on Williams, who should definitely improve the position on their team. I'm not sure what his lifetime success will be, but in the short-term, he's helpful to Detroit. |
1.31 | | MLB Courtney Watson | The Rams are a complete team, having made back to back Super Bowls, but their age will begin to show. Heading it off, the Rams select Courtney Watson who should be able to take over for Ed McDaniel when he retires after this season. |
1.32 | | DT Dwan Edwards | Push comes to shove, I think Norbert intends to draft every real life Baltimore Raven possible. It's working out now, but long-term, I don't know if it will. Dwan isn't a bad pick, but might not be the best at this juncture. |
