Why Didn?t I Know That SFL 2003 Season Player Stats

During the course of 2003 I remember us having discussions on Discord or radio shows regarding players such as Peyton Manning of the Colts, Priest Holmes of the Chiefs and more but I was a bit bored today and reviewed some stats from last season and thought it would make a decent topic and maybe we could discuss them. Here goes:

Rushing
Ahman Green- Green Bay Packers| 27 years old | 6?0? | 217 # | 94 OVR
90 SPD, 87 AWR, 92 AGI, 92 ACC, 86 CAR, 95 BTK, 98 IMP
2124 YDS | 360 ATT | 5.9 YPC | 13 TD
3rd in attempts | 2nd in yards | 2nd in YPC | 2nd in TD
Green could have been the league MVP. I know I personally was shocked when I reviewed his stats.

Musa Smith- New England Patriots | 22 years old | 6?0? | 232 # | 80 OVR
94 SPD, 54 AWR, 89 AGI, 94 ACC, 85 CAR, 80 BTK, 63 IMP
1956 YDS | 400 ATT | 4.89 YPC | 11 TD
1st in attempts | 3r in yards | 3rd in TD
We did talk about Smith but I still don?t know how this guy did what he did as there are some key attributes which Smith does not really flourish from. These would include 80 in BTK and 54 AWR. I expect a bit of a dip during Smith?s sophomore season even so Travis looks to have a franchise RB in Smith.

Michael Vick- Kansas City Chiefs | 24 years old | 6?0? | 215 # | 94 OVR
91 SPD, 82 AWR, 93 AGI, 94 ACC, 82 CAR, 63 BTK, 93 IMP
245 YDS | 46 ATT | 5.33 YPC | 6 TD | 3 FUM
Everyone thought Tim Miller was nuts when he traded for Vick and did not turn him into a balanced QB. Tim showed us that a scrambler can in fact be successful under the right circumstances. To me a couple things stand out with Vick. First off, he fumbled only 3 times all year, as a scrambler. Let me say that again?. Just 3 fumbles as a scrambling QB who played the entire season. On top of that 13.04 % of his carries went for TD?s.

Receiving
Okay, we all know how great of a season Reggie Wayne had which included 125 catches and almost 2000 yards. Can you name the other WR who had 100+ catches last season? Yes that?s right there were two of them.

Keyshawn Johnson- Tampa Bay Bucs | 32 years old | 6?4? | 212 # | 92 OVR
88 SPD, 68 STR, 91 AWR, 89 AGI, 90 ACC, 94 CTH, JMP 93, 89 IMP
106 CTH | 1514 YDS | 6 TD | 6 DROPS
2nd in catches, 5th in yards
Until I looked at the stats I had no idea Keyhawn Johnson had 100+ receptions last year and 5th in yards within over 1500. I hope he starts out 2004 much slower as he plays my Redskins in week 1.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=277&skin=lp

Travis Taylor- Baltimore Ravens | 26 years old | 6?1? | 210 # | 82 OVR
90 SPD, 60 STR, 80 AWR, 86 AGI, 88 ACC, 81 CTH, 85 JMP, 84 IMP
94 CTH | 1591 YDS | 12 TD | 7 DROPS
3rd in catches, 2nd in yards, 8th in TD?s
The Ravens won the 2003 SFL championship so we heard Taylor?s name but doesn?t quite have the attributes of other WR?s so how has he had such back to back amazing seasons? In 2003 he boasted 94 catches, almost 1600 yards and 12 TD?s.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=1305&skin=lp

Johnnie Morton- Kansas City Chiefs | 33 years old | 6?0? | 190 # | 87 OVR
91 SPD, 60 STR, 85 AWR, 86 AGI, 89 ACC, 90 CTH, 90 JMP, 72 IMP
10 TD?s in just 39 receptions- This was an impressive stat to me. To earn double digit TD?s is impressive by itself but to do it in just 39 receptions is great.

Passing
Again, we all know about the greatness of Peyton Manning but here?s some other guys who did some amazing things that you may have not realized.

Brad Johnson- Tampa Bay Bucs | 36 years old | 6?5? | 226 # | 92 OVR
94 AWR, 89 THP, 98 THA, 92 IMP
321 CMP | 569 ATT | 56.4 CMP % | 4550 YDS | 28 TD | 86.4 QBR
2nd in completions, 2nd in attempts, 7th in comp %.
What a season Brad Johnson had and I don?t think it was ever really mentioned. Again, I hope he starts off 2004 in horrible fashion since the Bucs play the Redskins.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=451&skin=lp

Jeff Blake- Baltimore Ravens | 34 years old | 6?1? | 92 OVR
91 AWR, 95 THP, 88 THA, 98 IMP
255 CMP, 459 ATT, 4021 YDS, 34 TD, 8 TD, 102.3 QBR
4th in completions, 5th in attempts, 10th in comp %, 3rd in yards, 3td in TD, 4th in QBR
4000+ yards, 30+ TD?s, 100+ in QBR and only 8 interceptions, Wow!
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=1263&skin=lp

Mark Brunell- Carolina Panthers | 34 years old | 6?1? | 96 OVR
97 AWR, 86 THP, 99 THA, 99 IMP
34 TD, 9 INT, 105. QBR, 3648 YDS
3rd in QBR, 4th in TD, 7th in YDS
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=845&skin=lp

Caron Palmer- Arizona Cardinals | 24 years old | 6?4? | 237 # | 88 OVR
79 AWR, 96 THP, 89 THA, 85 IMP
217 CMP, 428 ATT, 32 TD
9th in completions, 10th in attempts, 8th in yards, 8th inTD?s
Welcome to the 30 TD club, as a rookie! Palmer is going to be a huge star, actually he already is I guess.

Blocking
Quick, name the three offensive linemen who had 100 or greater pancake slats year? I would have gotten two of them but one is my player. Everyone probably would have known about the year Jonathan Ogden but how about these guys:

Chris Samuels- Washington Redskins | 27 years old | 6?5? | 310 # | 92 OVR
Left Tackle- 92 AWR, 90 STR, 71 AGI, 76 ACC, 90 PBK, 90 RBK, 88 IMP
103 PANCAKES, 4 SACKS ALLOWED
2nd in pancakes
Samuels was the clear leader of the Redskins offensive line in 2003.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=1351&skin=lp

Derrick Deese- Kansas City Chiefs | 34 years old | 6?3? | 289 # | 86 OVR
Left Guard- 80 AWR, 88 STR, 63 AGI, 69 ACC, 88 PBK, 87 RBK, 58 IMP
100 PANCAKES, 5 SACKS ALLOWED
3rd in pancakes
Deese led the way for 2000+ yard rusher Priest Holmes.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=742&skin=lp

Brad Hopkins- New England Patriots | 34 years old | 6?3? | 305 # | 91 OVR
Right Tackle- 92 AWR, 92 STR, 60 AGI, 63 ACC, 92 PBK, 92 RBK, 79 IMP
90 PANCAKES, 1 SACK ALLOWED
6th in pancakes, 1st in pancakes to sack ratio
In my opinion Brad Hopkins was the best offensive lineman in the SFL last year- just an amazing season. He allowed 1 sack from the right tackle position.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=1601&skin=lp

Will Shields- Kansas City Chiefs | 33 years old | 6?3? | 315 # | 99 OVR
Right guard- 95 AWR, 93 STR, 62 AGI, 67 ACC, 98 PBK, 98 RBK, 86 IMP
While not as flashy as the OT spots, Will Sheilds proves your RG can be a stat producer as well as he totaled 82 pancakes to just 2 sacks allowed- great season.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=458&skin=lp

Olin Kreutz- Chicago Bears | 27 year old | 6?2? | 292 # | 97 OVR
Center- 90 AWR, 91 STR, 70 AGI, 77 ACC, 93 PBK, 92 RBK, 80 IMP
Kreutz plays the least attractive and most say, lest important offensive line position but provides the Bears with guard like production and is perhaps the best center in the league.

----------

Defensive Linemen
While the Dline is full of big names with overpriced salaries lets look at some of the ones who may have been overlooked.

Richard Seymour- New England Patriots | 25 years old | 6?6? | 310 # | 93 OVR
Left end- 75 SPD, 89 STR, 79 AWR, 81 AGI, 78 ACC, 82 TAK, 87 IMP
39 TAK, 6 TFL, 21 Sacks
1st in sacks
It?s hard to say the league sack leader is ever overlooked but Seymour?s production from 2003 may not have truly been appreciated. What, a sub 80 SPD & sub 80 ACC led the league in sacks? I was quite surprised by the overwhelming season Seymour had. The Patriots hope 2004 is a similar season.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=1148&skin=lp

Dewayne White- Houston Texans | 24 years old | 6?2? | 273 # | 83 OVR
Right end- 79 SPD, 68 AWR, 68 AWR, 82 AGI, 76 ACC, 70 TAK, 66 IMP
Dewayne White didn?t lead the RE?s in sacks but he had the best overall season from a RE in my opinion. He was also a rookie so the Texans will look for him to continue where he left off.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=2164&skin=lp

Rob Meier- Oakland Raiders | 27 year old | 6?5? | 293 # | 81 OVR
Defensive tackle- 65 SPD, 87 STR, 61 AWR, 70 AGI, 75ACC, 83 TAK, 59 IMP
Meier may not be Warren Sapp but he was the only other DT who recorded double digit sacks in 2003.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=866&skin=lp

----------

Linebackers
What is the preference, big and strong or fast and agile? Linebacker is an area where GM?s have differed in the past.

Derrick Brooks- Tampa Bay Bucs | 31 years old | 6?0? | 235 # | 99 OVR
ROLB- 87 SPD, 75 STR, 90 AWR, 88 AGI, 89 ACC, 99 TAK, 99 IMP
87 Tackles, 19 TFL, 5 Sacks
1st in tackles (ROLB), 1st in TFL (ROLB), 2nd in sacks (ROLB)
Brooks may not have went through 2003 without being noticed but I for one didn?t realize he led ROLB?s in both tackles and tackles for loss while being tied for 2nd for sacks.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=260&skin=lp

Brady James- Atlanta Falcons | 23 years old | 6?2? | 243 # | 81 OVR
LOLB- 84 SPD, 77 STR, 65 AWR, 82 AGI, 83 ACC, 81 TAK, 60 IMP
49 tackles, 15 TFL, 8 sacks
1st in sacks (LOLB), 2nd in TFL (LOLB)
James may not be a household name but he was a rookie and had one heck of a year. The Falcons will look for him to do even more in his sophomore season.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=2206&skin=lp

Donnie Edwards- San Diego Chargers | 31 years old | 6?2? | 227 # | 97 OVR
MLB- 86 SPD, 70 STR, 94 AWR, 84 AGI, 86 ACC, 99 TAK, 88 IMP
101 tackles, 18 TFL, 2 sacks, 3 fumble rec, 5 ints
Donnie Edwards is not a an unknown name to SFL GM?s however he doesn?t seem to be mentioned alongside Ray Lewis. Edwards stats from last season prove he should be.

Defensive backs
This is another position where some GM?s have different thoughts. Some care about size first where as others want speed and then others look at awareness as their first main interest.

Ryan McNeil- Buffalo Bills | 34 years old | 6?2? | 210 # | 83 OVR
CB- 83 SPD, 68 STR, 87 AWR, 81 AGI, 81 ACC, 72 CTH, 67 IMP
63 tackles, 10 int
1st in int (tied)
Here?s an older, slower veteran who proved to have an outstanding year last season. This is definitely a check mark in the ?bigger is better? box.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=397&skin=lp

Aeneas Williams- San Fran 49?ers | 34 years old | 5?11? | 200 # | 99 OVR
CB- 91 SPD, 65 STR, 97 AWR, 91 AGI, 92 ACC, 86 CTH, 96 IMP
65 tackles, 10 int
1st in int (tied)
Well, this is the exact opposite as it was above. Williams is/was on the smaller, faster side of thigns so this is a check mark in the ?speed in more important? box.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=397&skin=lp

Marlon McCree- Jacksonville Jaguars | 27 years old | 5?11? | 76 OVR
FS- 85 SPD, 58 STR, 67 AWR, 85 AGI, 86 ACC, 61 CTH, 58 IMP
65 tckles, 4 int?s
2nd in int? (for FS)
Believe it or not, McCree had just as good of a season or more not named Ed Reed.
http://smashmouth-football.net/player.php?id=864&skin=lp

Kenoy Kennedy- Denver Broncos | 27 years old | 6?1? | 80 OVR
SS- 82 SPD, 73 STR, 73 AWR, 80 AGI, 85 ACC, 59 CTH, 63 IMP
80 tackles, 5 ints
6th in tackles (for SS), 2nd in int (for SS)
Kennedy had just as a good of a season from a SS as anyone not named John Lynch.

Boy, that took a while but I could not go fishing due to a big set of storms that went by so I guess it was a somewhat productive way to spend the afternoon/evening. Bring on the 2004 season.
