A couple of notes on these rankings. 1) Rankings are based on pre-scouting, pre-skew attributes. 2) I have a bias toward certain attributes and this will no doubt be reflected in these rankings. Feel free to use adjust them according to your preference.
Quarterbacks QB-Kyle Orton- 22 years old, 6?3?, 67 AWR, 95 THP, 86 THA, and 88 INJ- Orton appears to be the clear cut best QB in this draft. Rogers and Smith are the bigger names, but Orton has the better attributes. Side note, the QB?s in this draft are noticeably worse than the QB?s in the 2004 draft. Orton is probably the only one that could compare with the top QB?s in 2004.
QB-David Greene- 23 years old, 6?3?, 63 AWR, 90 THP, and 86 THA, and 95 INJ- Surprisingly Green ranks second in this ranking. But as the numbers stand right now, I see him as the second best QB in this draft. Smith has better numbers but he?s going to be a scrambler and will need activity points to be changed. Greene, however, is not going to be a scrambler, so I think he?s better.
QB-Aaron Rodgers- 21 years old, 6?2?, 64 AWR, 87 THP, and 87 THA, and 92 INJ- Rodgers has disappointing attributes for his name, which means one of two things. 1) Someone is going to draft him sooner than they should because of his name or 2) He?s going to skew up and he should be ranked higher than he currently is in this ranking.
QB-Alex Smith- 21 years old, 6?4?, 67 AWR, 90 THP, 87 THA, and 95 INJ- Smith actually has the second best attributes in the draft but as I mentioned above, he?s a scrambler and that?s moves him down to fourth in these rankings. To GM?s who can easily change tendency to an abundance of accumulated activity points, he could be a steal. Right now though, he?s #4 on the list.
QB-Charlie Frye- 24 years old, 6?3?, 63 AWR, 93 THP, 84 THA, and 96 INJ- Frye is an intriguing prospect. He?s a borderline scrambler, but if he turns out not to be a scrambler then I think teams could still get an all-star caliber starter a couple of years down the road.
Halfbacks HB-Marion Barber- 22 years old, 5?11?, 221 lbs., 87 SPD, 69 STR, 61 AWR, 88 AGI, 93 ACC, 81 CAR, and 85 BTK- This is a very week RB class. Barber is at least a polished option even if he doesn?t have elite speed. His first year progression will only make him more attractive. It will be interesting to see if a RB goes in round 1 this year. I think they probably will and I would actually be surprised if Barber goes first, but I rank him as best back in this draft.
HB-Cedric Benson- 5?10?, 222 lbs., 88 SPD, 67 STR, 65 AWR, 90 AGI, 90 ACC, 82 CAR, and 89 BTK- Benson, Brown, and Barber are all similar backs. Benson has the best agility and break tackle which might push him to the top of some GM?s rankings. Overall I have him at #2.
HB-Ronnie Brown- 23 years old, 6?0?, 233 lbs., 87 SPD, 75 STR, 62 AWR, 84 AGI, 90 ACC, 77 CAR, and 82 BTK- Brown?s size is what stands out in this draft. But if you just look at attributes he just doesn?t stack up to Barber or Benson. However, I think GM?s will want Brown?s size over Barber and Benson?s athleticism. OK so the talent drop off at this point is substantial. There are a couple of other options, but they are not great options.
HB-Brandon Jacobs- 23 years old, 6?4?, 252 lbs,, 84 SPD, 51 STR, 49 AWR, 89 AGI, 90 ACC, 73 CAR, and 83 TAK- I think his strength makes him a broken player. But he?s huge and he will have decent acceleration as well. He?s worth a gamble for some team in desperation mode. But again I think he is a broken player.
HB-J.J. Arrington- 22 years old, 5?9?, 214 lbs., 90 SPD, 68 STR, 60 AWR, 92 AGI, 95 ACC, 70 CAR, and 75 BTK- Arrington is a short speed back, but he?s the most athletic back in this draft which is saying much. Some GM will have him completely off their boards others may be more open to his skill set.
Fullbacks FB-John Kuhn- 24 years old, 6?0?, 250 lbs., 86 SPD, 80 STR, 60 AWR, 85 AGI, 89 ACC, 66 CAR, 64 BTK, 52 PBK, and 61 RBK- Kuhn is a beast of a fullback. He?s big, athletic, and strong. He?s not the ideal ball carrier but he?ll be a great blocker. I think it will be interesting to see where he lands in the draft. I?m going to say somebody takes him in round 2.
FB-Leonard Weaver- 22 years old, 6?0?, 242 lbs., 83 SPD, 69 STR, 59 AWR, 85 AGI, 85 ACC, 67 CAR, 57 BTK, 54 PBK, and 54 RBK- Much like Kuhn, Weaver is a beast, though with less strength. And much like Kuhn, Weaver isn?t going to be much of a ball carrier but will be a pretty good blocker. The rest of the FB?s aren?t worth talking about.
Tight Ends Contact Kevin about one of his two TE?s- Seriously this TE class is so terrible that the best option isn?t even in this class. It?s to contact Kevin about one of his two TE?s he drafted last season.
TE-Heath Miller- 22 years old, 6?4?, 254 lbs., 79 SPD, 69 STR, 66 AWR, 83 AGI, 79 ACC, and 70 CTH- Of the actual TE?s in this class, Miller is the best. He will be and 80 SPD, 70 STR, 80 AGI, and 80 ACC. I?m confident there are a handful of teams looking for a TE but I can?t see one going before the 2nd round.
TE-Keith Everett- 23 years old, 6?4?, 250 lbs., 73 SPD, 83 STR, 52 AWR, 75 AGI, 74 ACC, and 77 CTH- Under the category of playable we find Everett. If you like strength is your TE then then maybe you maybe you value Everett a little higher than I do, but he will find a place on the roster somewhere.
TE-Patrick Estes- 22 years, 6?7?, 310 lbs., 72 SPD, 76 STR, 65 AWR, 66 AGI, 72 ACC, and 75 CTH- Estes is a fascinating player. He?s the biggest TE I can recall in any Madden league. The question is does that make him good? I know this for sure, there won?t be a safety or even a LB even close to his size.
Don?t draft anyone else unless you need a roster filler.
Wide Receivers WR-Matt Jones- 22 years old, 6?6?, 220 lbs., 91 SPD, 64 STR, 51 AWR, 91 AGI, 93 ACC, and 82 CTH- Jones is one of the top three best players in the draft from my perspective. Will believes otherwise, but unless he knows something via a scout, I don?t know how he gets there. Clarence Moore is a solid WR taken in the first round last year and Jones is significantly better athletically than he is at the same height.
WR-Braylon Edwards- 22 years, 6?3?, 209 lbs., 91 SPD, 65 STR, 66 AWR, 94 AGI, 92 ACC, and 84 CTH- Edwards isn?t as flashy as Jones, but he?s got the potential to be a super star. Edwards will be similar to Anquan Boldin only taller and more athletic. Edwards has great starting awareness and catch to go with his rest of superior attributes. I wouldn?t be surprised if he is a top 10 pick in this draft.
WR-Mike Williams- 21 years old, 6?4?, 230 lbs., 90 SPD, 51 STR, 61 AWR, 91 AGI, 90 ACC, and 88 CTH- Williams just edges Jackson as the third best WR in this draft. Williams edges out Jackson based on better awareness and catch. He?s an inch shorter but I don?t see that as more important than than the progressible attributes.
WR-Vincent Jackson- 22 years old, 6?5?, 241 lbs., 88 SPD, 65 STR, 52 AWR, 90 AGI, 90 ACC, and 77 CTH- Jackson is a tall-framed possession WR who also compares to the Patriots, Clarence Moore. I am a little concerned about Jackson?s skew but even a low skew will not prevent him from being a solid player in this league.
WR-Craig Bragg- 23 years old, 6?1?, 92 SPD, 48 STR, 50 AWR, 93 AGI, 93 ACC, and 77 CTH- Bragg is the closest thing to a speed WR over 5?10? in this draft. He won?t be a highly sought after receiver but placed in a prominent role on a team, he can still give you well over 1000 yards. Think here of a slightly slower Maurice Mann.
Offensive Tackles & Guards LT-Wes Simms- 23 years old, 6?6?, 330 lbs., 68 SPD, 95 STR, 57 AWR, 74 AGI, 79 ACC, 85 PBK, and 85 RBK- Simms combines power, size, and athleticism. He?s a starter from day one and should be a top 10 pick in this draft. With a little help from the skew and or activity points, he could be a 70 SPD 95 STR, 70 AGI, and 80 ACC offensive lineman. Orlando Pace and Brett Wiliams are the closest comparables.
RT-Rob Petitti- 23 years old, 6?6?, 325 lbs., 58 SPD, 97 STR, 64 AWR, 65 AGI, 70 ACC, 88 PBK, and 85 RBK- Petitti has the ideal strength that you want for an elite offensive lineman. He doesn?t have elite athleticism but it?s still good for the current talent level of the league. Petitti will be coveted by many GM?s, I just not sure where he will land but it will be in the first round.
LT-Marcus Johnson- 26 years old, 6?6?, 320 lbs., 64 SPD, 92 STR, 56 AWR, 72 AGI, 77 ACC, 85 PBK, and 86 RBK- Johnson elite level athleticism but lacks the strength of a Petite. It is very conceivable that GM?s will favor Johnson over Petitti because of his speed and acceleration. While there is clearly depth at this position in this year?s draft, teams will still want to prioritize Johnson.
RT-Todd Herremans- 22 years, 6?8?, 321 lbs., 70 SPD, 92 STR, 53 AWR, 71 AGI, 74 ACC, 86 PBK, and 84 RBK- Herremans is the fastest OL in this draft. Tom already said he is the running for 1.2 though I?m not sure how serious he is about that. Herremans awareness is a little low for my liking in round one, but he will still be a great lineman when he develops.
LT-Jammal Brown- 24 years old, 6?6?, 316 lbs., 56 SPD, 92 STR, 70 AWR, 63 AGI, 73 ACC, 92 PBK, and 88 RBK- Brown rounds out and impressive top five. He?s the most polished lineman in this draft, though he lacks the ideal athleticism for a top pick. I think all five of these lineman will be gone in round one and potentially even in the top 20. But as a said earlier, there is significant depth at these positions so teams will be able to grab players in rounds 2 and 3 that could be starters as well.
Centers C-Chris Spencer- 23 years old, 6?3?, 307 lbs., 65 SPD, 87 STR, 55 AWR, 69 AGI, 78 ACC, 89 PBK, and 88 RBK- Spencer doesn?t have the strength of other potential top choices but he has great athleticism, in fact the best of the group. Plus his strength is still very good. I think Spencer could go in round one.
C-Duke Preston- 23 years old, 6?5?, 311 lbs., 65 SPD, 90 STR, 59 AWR, 65 AGI, 72 ACC, 81 PBK, and 82 RBK- Preston is next up on the list of centers in this year?s draft. In most year?s Preston could be a top pick so he?s no fluke. Preston has better strength but he lacks the blocking skills and athleticism.
C-David Baas- 23 years old, 6?4?, 319 lbs., 61 SPD, 91 STR, 62 AWR, 70 AGI, 70 ACC, 84 PBK, and 87 RBK- Baas will be a starter in this league and likely from day one. If he skews up in acceleration he immediately move up this ranking.
C-Jason Brown- 22 years old, 6?2?, 320 lbs., 60 SPD, 92 STR, 55 AWR, 70 AGI, 71 ACC, 84 PBK, and 80 RBK- Brown is the most raw prospect who is still able to start from day one. He has lower awareness and blocking skills though his he has solid athleticism and strength.
C-Jon Condo- 23 years old, 6?3?, 245 lbs., 61 SPD, 93 STR, 52 AWR, 66 AGI, 73 ACC, 81 PBK, and 84 RBK- Condo is a really interesting player. He lacks the size you want for a starter but he has the attributes. There may be a few GM?s who take a gamble on him but it will be in the mid-rounds of this draft.
So this concludes the rankings on the offensive side of the ball. Next we will take a look at the defensive side of the ball.
