PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | CB Brandon Browner | I've mentioned in the past that I've noticed that Jason Arnold likes athletic secondary players in the first round. It fits a need on his team, however, and how often do we get stud 6'4" cornerbacks? This one is a cinch. |
1.02 | | WR Matt Jones | You don't pay a king's ransom to move up one spot and not select the 6'6" wide receiver you know that everyone covets. In fact, if anyone but Matt Jones is the pick here, the Broncos lose out big on their trade to move up. |
1.03 | | MLB Alfred Fincher | It's possibly the Cowboys may look for another receiver with this pick, but Alfred Fincher at MLB may be too hard to pass up. A lot could change between now and the draft, however, with the Cowboys have a league-leading $50 million in cap space. |
1.04 | | WR Braylon Edwards | The Lions have a lot of holes that need to be filled. They also don't have the cap room to do so in free agency, so I would expect this selection to either be a cornerback or a wide receiver. |
1.05 | | LT Wes Sims | Buffalo made the first big trade of the offseason, jettisoning off Grossman and bringing in Steve McNair. If they want McNair to win them games, though, they have to protect him. Wes Sims makes a lot of sense. |
1.06 | | LOLB Shawne Merriman | The next five picks are owned by the NFC West, with four of them belonging to Arizona. I think Tyler has a couple cornerbacks that he likes, but with concerns that the Seahawks snag Merriman with the next pick, they take him first. |
1.07 | | FS O.J. Atogwe | There are a few players that the Seahawks may look to draft, but I feel like Rock Hewko won't be able to pass on Atogwe as a safety, especially with Merriman just falling off the board. Another option would be Marcus Spears, but I'm leaning Atogwe. |
1.08 | | CB Corey Webster | The next few picks could really go in any order. My gut tells me Arizona tries to trade out of at least one of these (to prevent huge cap build-up in a couple seasons). I'm not convinced Tyler likes any cornerbacks outside of Browner, but I figure I might as well mock him one. (He's going to correct me anyway.) |
1.09 | | RT Todd Herremans | Herremans isn't a name we've heard much yet, but he fits the type of player the Cardinals like to acquire. Might be a bit early. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson go higher, especially with his high agility. |
1.10 | | MLB Odell Thurman | Arizona desperately needs a middle linebacker and while I'm sure they prefer Fincher, Thurman isn't a bad player either. He rounds out a top 10 that will be a "make or break" class for Arizona. |
1.11 | | LOLB Cameron Wake | The Saints are an interesting team. They're solid across the board, but lack "elite" talent to take the next level. If they have one hole, it's at outside linebacker, and this is the range I expect Wake to go in. |
1.12 | | RE Marcus Spears | Someone is going to make a jump at Spears as he could play fairly well anywhere along the defensive line, especially if his speed skews up. We'll have to wait and see, but I could see him being a Titan. |
1.13 | | LT Jammal Brown | The Chargers just re-upped on Chad Pennington, so now they have to make sure he's protected. Jammal Brown is the type of player you assume a lot of people will be interested in, but who may drop out of the Top 10 because of his slowness. |
1.14 | | LOLB David Pollack | The Titans need to bolster their defense to save their GM's job and I think with this run on Titans picks in the teens (let's call him Arizona 2.0), Pollack may find himself playing in Tennessee. |
1.15 | | CB Stanford Routt | I'd imagine the Titans will pick a cornerback with one of their top 15 picks. At this juncture, Routt is the best available and makes sense for their team, even if he doesn't fit a specific need on their roster. |
1.16 | | CB Mike Hawkins | This is where I expect the secondary run to begin, a little later than some other predictions I've seen/heard. Mike Hawkins would fit nicely in New York and with some development, could be a long-term starter. |
1.17 | | WR Mike Williams | I originally expected Tampa Bay to draft a QB here, but with the trade for David Carr, and their spot on the hot seat, I would expect them to grab a stud wide receiver to help make a push for the playoffs. |
1.18 | | QB Kyle Orton | This might be a smart season for Baltimore to take their QB of the future. While Aaron Rodgers or Alex Smith may appear the sexier names, Orton looks like the best signal caller and he becomes the heir apparent to a soon-retiring Jeff Blake. |
1.19 | | C David Baas | San Diego continues to build their offensive line, now selecting a center to help protect their quarterback. Baas is a unique talent at center and should be able to start from day one. |
1.20 | | CB Justin Miller | Miller's attributes are very high, but his 5'10" frame will scare off a lot of GMs. The Falcons, however, have done well with smaller cornerbacks in the past and may just take the gamble on him. |
1.21 | | WR Brandon Jones | The Bengals are in an interesting spot. They are both ready to compete now, but need to keep an eye on the future. Brandon Jones may make the most sense. |
1.22 | | CB Stanley Wilson | The talent in the draft is starting to drop off, so the Lions may take the last sure-fire bet at cornerback in Stanley Wilson. He'll take time to develop, but has the athletic attributes. |
1.23 | | RT Rob Petitti | Bledsoe being injured is Denver's nightmare scenario for the 2005 season. Protecting him will be important and Petitti can start from day one for the Broncos. He's a solid grab at this juncture. |
1.24 | | FS Ben Emanuel | This is a name that hasn't been mentioned much so far, but Emanuel's 6'3" frame ought to be attractive to Tyler. He makes a great grab this late in the first round and would likely start day one. |
1.25 | | WR Vincent Jackson | The Raiders just made the big move to acquire Jeff Garcia. That means they are all in for 2005 and need to get him some weapons. Vincent Jackson is likely the best receiver left in the draft. |
1.26 | | LT Marcus Johnson | Peyton Manning injuries have been the biggest concern in Indianapolis to this point, so acquiring offensive line talent continues to be of a lot of importance. Marcus Johnson would make for a good addition. |
1.27 | | CB Antrel Rolle | I almost forgot about Antrel Rolle until this point. I think he goes lower than expected because of his poor agility, but Minnesota would gladly grab him as they are on the record for liking him a lot. |
1.28 | | TE Heath Miller | This is a hard pick for me and it's going with the assumption that Heath Miller skews up. If he does, he's a solid pick for Tennessee at this point. Otherwise, this is a really bad pick. |
1.29 | | LG Dan Buenning | The Patriots have drafted very well so far by being patient and grabbing players who aren't overly advertised. I would that this year, Buenning is the player. |
1.30 | | QB Alex Smith | The "Patrick Ramsey era has begun" was announced on Discord. I don't think it lasts long. Alex Smith is an obvious immediate upgrade and he's 5 years younger. He will take activity points for a tendency change, but the Bears are in for the long haul. This makes sense. |
1.31 | | DT Ronald Fields | Carolina needs to upgrade on the interior of their defensive line and I think this might be the year to do so. Breck likes bigger men (yeah he does...) and Fields fits the bill best. |
1.32 | | MLB Jordan Beck | I'm expecting Atlanta to move to a 3-4 defense and with Beck still on the board, he's a no brain selection for the Falcons. He'll start immediately and help with the defensive transformation the team is looking for. |
