PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | CB Brandon Browner | There are no questions regarding this pick. Tyler covets tall stud CBs and Browner is that despite having poor progessables. However, simply put, GM Richardson won't be able to help himself. |
1.02 | | WR Matt Jones | Another GM who won't be able to help himself, the Broncos are going to take Matt Jones, besides the fact he isn't even the best wide receiver in the draft. Jones ends up on a Broncos roster where he splits time with Boldin. |
1.03 | | LOLB Shawne Merriman | This is where things get interesting. A case could be made for Alfred Fincher, but with a trio of solid MLBs (who can be picked in 8 picks) and only one good OLB (at a position of need), Merriman becomes the pick. |
1.04 | | CB Corey Webster | If I'm the Lions, I want to move out of this spot. But we don't do trades in this mock draft, so the Lions add to their secondary, taking the best available on their board, which would be Webster. |
1.05 | | LT Wes Sims | This is the most obvious pick after Browner and Jones at 1 and 2. Wes Sims fills a position of need on a team that just acquired a veteran quarterback to save their job. Sims is the left tackle of the future in Buffalo. |
1.06 | | WR Mike Williams | A lot of people are going to say Braylon Edwards should be the second receiver off the board (they are right), but I think GM Jason Arnold opts for the taller receiver in Mike Williams, hoping he skews up. |
1.07 | | WR Braylon Edwards | I think Seattle would be tempted to select O.J. Atogwe with this pick, but with a 6'3" stud WR falling to them, I doubt GM Rock Hewko will be able to look in any other direction. |
1.08 | | MLB Alfred Fincher | Tyler Richardson will be running to the podium if this happens and Fincher drops to him at 8, after considering him at 3. Between Browner, Merriman and Fincher, Cardinals rule the draft. |
1.09 | | FS O.J. Atogwe | I'm tempted to go offensive line with this pick, but the Jaguars do need someone at strong safety. Either moving Atogwe or Prioleau to the position is the easiest answer, instead of reaching for a guard. |
1.10 | | QB Kyle Orton | The Rams might go defense or offensive line with this pick, but Orton could be the future of their franchise, which they are rebuilding. Maybe it's time for people to inquire about Warner? |
1.11 | | CB Antrel Rolle | The Saints have a good roster, but it could be upgraded everywhere. Rolle may have bad agility, but if it skews up he is very servicable. I think New Orleans would be happy to have him. |
1.12 | | CB Carlos Rogers | While this pick could easily be a MLB, I think that the Bears wait on a MLB until they pick at 15. They just miss out on Orton, a likely target, but settle for a solid cornerback in Rogers. |
1.13 | | RT Todd Herremans | I expect the Chargers to double dip on offensive linemen in the draft, as they are in a lot of need at the position. If Herremans drops, he's an obvious pick. |
1.14 | | WR Marcus Maxwell | I think San Francisco gets a bum rap with the Rams selecting Orton a few picks before them. Unsure of what to do, they take a gander on Maxwell and hope he turns into a stud. |
1.15 | | MLB Jordan Beck | I'm starting to understand the love for Beck and I think GM Brent Lachapelle would be more than happy to get him at 15. Solid pickup for Chicago and he fills a massive need for their rebuild. |
1.16 | | RE Marcus Spears | I think the Jets look at Spears and see him as a fantastic 3-4 DE (assuming they are going 3-4 next season). He's not a sexy pick, but feels like one that GM Kevin Mullendore could make work. |
1.17 | | CB Stanford Routt | A lot of holes have been filled via trades and free agency for the Cowboys, but a place that have not yet addressed is the secondary. Routt makes the most sense for them at this juncture. It's good that the Cowboys Suck no more. |
1.18 | | WR Vincent Jackson | This is where the talent starts to drop off a little bit into the "maybe he will be good" area. Baltimore takes the best receiver on their board, who is the 6'5" Jackson. |
1.19 | | LT Marcus Johnson | They already selected Todd Herremans, but I mentioned they made need to double dip. Johnson is a solid player who should make an impact protecting both Chad Pennington and Brian Westbrook. |
1.20 | | FS Ben Emanuel | A 6'3" safety that has some solid athletic attributes? I think it's just what the doctor ordered for the Falcons and fits a serious position of need for then. GM Dhani Aldila will be happy. |
1.21 | | QB Alex Smith | This might be a controversial pick, but the Bengals typically have enough activity points for what they need. Kitna isn't getting younger, but can groom Smith. This may help with an easy transition in Cincy. |
1.22 | | WR Mark Clayton | The first picks in new regimes don't always hit home and I worry that Clayton could be the pick in Kansas City. He's fsat and ready to play, but height is the concern. However, with Vick's arm, speed might be what is needed. |
1.23 | | RT Pete McMahon | I think a lot of GMs are going to prefer Jammal Brown over McMahon, but GM Tom Riddell is very picky when it comes to speed in lineman. McMahon checks all the boxes and should do a good job for his new team. |
1.24 | | DT Shaun Cody | I was tempted to put a center here to the Panthers, but with more centers available that DTs, I think Carolina doubles down on a very much needed defensive tackle. Cody isn't stellar but he's good enough. |
1.25 | | MLB Odell Thurman | It's amazing that one of the top middle linebackers are still available, but I still think one will drop in this draft. The Raiders luck out with Thurman and won't regret picking him, despite Harris already being on the roster. |
1.26 | | CB Mike Hawkins | Hawkins may be a little raw, but his athletics have to be intriguing to the Colts, who have very little at secondary. He could likely start right away, or play the nickel for a season. |
1.27 | | RE Dan Cody | The Vikings have had a good offseason, but still have a couple holes on defense. Dan Cody, with a solid skew, could be a great contributor for seasons to come and I think Neal takes a chance on him. |
1.28 | | LOLB Cameron Wake | Wake is similar to Cody in the sense that he's not jumping off the paper (mostly because of his lower strength rating), but I think the Vikings would be willing to take him at this juncture. |
1.29 | | CB Justin Miller | New England has a fairly full roster, but could use some steady depth at cornerback. Miller may only be 5'10", but he's a good player who should be able to start on day one, if needed. I think he's a solid fit. |
1.30 | | LT Jammal Brown | What an offseason so far for Tennessee. However, their offensive line needs to be built up a tad bit more and with Jammal Brown still available, it's tempting. Brown starts day one at left tackle. |
1.31 | | HB Ronnie Brown | I'm tempting to put offensive tackle Rob Pettiti to the Cardinals here, but if he has a solid skew, Ronnie Brown could be good value too. Brown could instantly compete to start in Arizona. |
1.32 | | WR Chase Lyman | Daren likes his tall receivers and though Larry Brackins is a tad taller, Lyman might make better sense. Hope for a good skew though -- with a bad one this is a bust of a first round pick. |
