Position Series: CB
Cornerback is going to be a popular position this year in the draft. I compared the top CBs that led in deflections in 2004 and the top CBs from NAFL and I found some interesting changes to the position
Overall Impression: My biggest takeaway comparing the two leagues is that in general the CB position in SFL has been nerfed from the CBs in NAFL. Shorter, slower, and with less ability, but makes for a fun challenge. It will be interesting to see how this position grows with the SFL in future seasons.
The Details: Height: 5?11? (-2? from NAFL Avg.) The hight of the top CB has changed from 6+ CBs to the majority being 5.11?. I think this trend is simply due to 6+ CBs are still growing. I think this stat will shift in upcoming seasons closer to what it was in NAFL, but interesting.
Weight: 195lbs (No change from NAFL Avg.) The weight averages at 195 lbs. No change from NAFL.
Acceleration (ACC): Avg. 91 (-4 from NAFL Avg.) Acceleration dropped 4 points. This is a nod to the nerfing of the position. Personally, it?s a welcomed challenge, but like the height, I expect this to grow in upcoming seasons.
Speed (SPD): Avg. 92 (-2 from NAFL Avg.) Speed dropped 2 points. Less drastic than acceleration. The CBs ranged from 90 to 95. Remembering the NAFL I think long are the days with CBs with 99 speed. Also to note, we are seeing a shift in speed in WRs as well, so the trend of the league are slower positions, but it leaves for exciting opportunity if a player can get open.
Agility (AGI): Avg. 90 (-2 from NAFL Avg.) Like HB, like WR, agility is taking a step back 2 points. Agility ranged from 87 to 96.
Jump (JMP): Avg. 88 (-3 from NAFL Avg.) I expected with the smaller sized CBs there would be a boost in Jump to make up the size difference, but like the other stats, Jump dropped 3 points. JMP ranged from 86 to 93.
Awareness (AWR): Avg. 89 (-1 from NAFL Avg.) Unlike the other stats for CB, awareness experienced a smaller drop. Elite CBs are still in that mid-80+ range.
Tackling (TAK): Avg. 57 (-11 from NAFL Avg.) Tackling had the largest difference compared to NAFL. I think the league generally sees TAK less important compared to AWR, but it will be interesting if this number starts to creep in following seasons when we have more time to grow our CBs. Also, another indication of the CB nerf. Lowering the tackle can make a big difference to a long score.
Catch (CTH): Avg 65 (-3 from NAFL Avg.) Finally catch. Catch declined by 3 points. Top CBs in my sample ranged from 57 to 72.
In summary, average top CB looks like: Height: 5?11? Weight: 195lbs ACC: 91 SPD: 92 AGI: 90 JMP: 88 AWR: 89 TAK: 57 CTH: 65
What are the stats you value most in CB? What stats do you focus on when spending your progression points? Any discussion is appreciated.
