PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | WR Brandon Marshall | Tennessee paid big to move up to the first overall pick. There has been chatter about who he takes, but at this juncture, it has to be Marshall. Word is that TO is on the way out so Marshall replaces him instantly. He can pair with Tyrone Calico. |
1.02 | | ROLB A.J. Hawk | The Saints need a lot of help in their linebacking corps, so if they stay at 1.02 (apparently it's open for trade), I would guess that A.J. Hawk makes the most sense for them. He's a total stud who can play on day one. Another name you might hear here is Leon Williams. |
1.03 | | QB Matt Leinart | I think the pick here comes down to either D'Brickashaw Ferguson or Matt Leinart. Sorgi isn't GM Ratajczak's guy however, so Sorgi time is over in Denver and the Matt Leinart era begins. You just have to hope they get a nice blind side protector for him later in the draft. |
1.04 | | WR Cory Rodgers | The Texans desperately want Leinart, I believe, but he's off the board. So Houston has to go to the next best thing, which is an eventual deep threat for their future franchise quarterback. Cory Rodgers performed well at the combine and will be the pick. |
1.05 | | DT Haloti Ngata | It's a position of need for the team and I'm not sure if Norbert can turn down picking one of his favorite Ravens of all time. Ngata is likely a reach here, but it's a position of need, so very likely to be the pick. Perhaps Baltimore moves to a 3-4? |
1.06 | | WR Todd Watkins | This last of the trifecta of super tall, super fast wide receivers (okay there are more). Watkins fits well for the rebuild in Tampa Bay with new GM Bill Ryan. Marc Bulger needs a couple of new targets and Watkins will be the first of money. |
1.07 | | RE Darryl Tapp | I'm not quite sure the direction the Jets will go here, but I have to assume they like the athletic combination that Darryl Tapp could bring to their team. He's a strong, fast lineman who could allow them to shift players around as needed. |
1.08 | | LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson | In consideration for the Cowboys when they were at 1.01, GM William Cook would be ecstatic if Ferguson dropped to his team at 1.08. Word is Snee will be moving inside to LG, so Ferguson would get the start on day on on the blindside. |
1.09 | | RT Quinn Ojinnaka | After the offensive linemen start to drop a little, we see two come off the board in quick succession. Ojinnaka likely gets shifted to the left side, but should be a starter over Cornell Green for the Panthers on day one. |
1.10 | | MLB Leon Williams | GM Leonard Jones loves to run the 3-4 and he plans on bringing his super successful scheme to Carolina. Courtney Watson has already followed him to Carolina, so a second MLB is in order, and that is likely going to be Leon Williams. |
1.11 | | LT Marcus McNeill | The Vikings continue to look for more and more players to protect Daunte Culpepper. Coming off the #1 seed last year, keeping Culpepper healthy has to be the first concern for GM Neal Wintermute. McNeill is good value at this slot. |
1.12 | | ROLB Thomas Howard | Tennessee traded their linebacking corps to select Brandon Marshall first overall, so you have to expect them to select a couple in the draft to find replacements. Howard is the best available at the juncture and should fit in well. |
1.13 | | RE Mario Williams | I don't think that GM Rock Hewko is overly concerned with awareness on the defensive line, so he may be the GM to give Mario Williams a go. Strength is a concern, but with blazing speed he may make a very good left defensive end. |
1.14 | | DT Brodrick Bunkley | The Patriots like to draft value, but in this case, they get a decent player at a position of need for their team. Bunkley should be able to start on day one and make a big difference on the Patriots defensive line. It's a win for GM Travis Robbins. |
1.15 | | FS Pat Watkins | Last year, the Seahawks took O.J. Atogwe in the top 10. This year, they take Pat Watkins and will move one to strong safety, allowing the other to play at their naturally drafted slot. A 6'5" safety is a rarity, so this is a win for Seattle. |
1.16 | | RT Jeremy Trueblood | The Falcons get one last shot at this with Trent Green coming back for a curtain call. They need to make sure he is protected if they want to win the big prize. Trueblood is the best offensive lineman left and will likely be the pick. |
1.17 | | LOLB Jamar Williams | We're beginning to see the crop of outside linebackers thin out so the 49ers take a gander on Jamar Williams in hopes that his blazing speed will be able to help them. He's a solid pick up and should start right away on their defense. |
1.18 | | MLB Stephen Tulloch | An offensive tackle might be in the works here, but once again I think GM Olivier Ratajczak opts for a player that will make a longer impact than one of the linemen left in the draft. Tullock may be short, but he's a well-rounded middle linebacker who can make a difference. |
1.19 | | WR Demetrius Williams | The Dolphins need to add more targets so Williams is likely top of their board at this juncture. They're likely hoping someone like Darryl Tapp will drop, but Williams isn't a bad addition to their team and should make an impact. |
1.20 | | CB Josh Lay | How crazy is it that we are twenty picks in and we have yet to see a cornerback off the board? This isn't a normal draft class. GM Brent Lachapelle decides he'll bit the bullet and gives Josh Lay a chance to develop on his squad and turn into a star. |
1.21 | | FB Lawrence Vickers | This may seem crazy, but Vickers is by far the best running back in the class. We saw GM Neal Wintermute get a little creative last year and I think he takes Vickers with the thought of him being the eventual replacement to Eddie George. |
1.22 | | WR Miles Austin | The Browns have almost no one left to throw the ball to and with the wide receivers starting to dry up, GM Tom Collins will take Austin and hope that he turns into a superstar. He has the right skill set, but his awareness is extremely low. |
1.23 | | RG Davin Joseph | The Eagles have quite a few holes in the wake of new GM Darryl Breckheimer's "rebuilding project". Adding another quality offensive lineman to the crew makes sense and Davin Joseph is a great addition to their squad. He should perform well. |
1.24 | | RT Eric Winston | The Jaguars now have a Top 5 quarterback, but no blindside protector for him. It's imperative they find one, so Winston becomes the pick for them and they slide him to the left side of the offensive line. They likely need a guard as well, but will handle that later. |
1.25 | | FS Nate Salley | Carolina already has taken an offensive tackle and a middle linebacker, so I think they now turn their attention to their middling safety corps. Salley is a 6'3" safety who should be able to find a starting gig from day one on Jones' squad. |
1.26 | | LE Frostee Rucker | It's starting to get down to slim pickings so the Bears may look for a balanced defensive end who can add some depth to their roster. It's not a sexy or an exciting pick, but it's one that could potentially do something for the team in the long term if he develops. |
1.27 | | CB Marcus Maxey | The New York secondary is starting to get a bit old, so bringing in a young guy who can start in the nickel might be in their best plan. Maxey has the potential to be good if he can get over his awareness slump and get some real in game experience. |
1.28 | | TE Vernon Davis | It's time for Indianapolis to add another threat, this time at tight end. Vernon Davis isn't explosive, but he could end up being one of the better tight ends in the league. It's a solid addition for a Colts squad that lacked identity in 2005. |
1.29 | | C Nick Mangold | Arizona's first pick is at 29. We really have entered the twilight zone. And yet, they still acquire the piece that they desperately need in Nick Mangold. He will be a career player who should make multiple pro bowls. The defending champs have to be happy. |
1.30 | | QB Charlie Whitehurst | Cincinnati almost lost Jon Kitna this offseason and despite claims that "Garrard is the future", you have to think they might be looking for a true heir apparent. Whitehurst isn't a big name, but he could easily become a solid starter in the SFL. |
1.31 | | MLB D'Qwell Jackson | The Patriots take the best player available and they have to start looking at an eventually replacement for Tedy Bruschi. With Jackson still available at MLB, he makes sense for them at this position. It also gives them the option for an eventual 3-4. |
1.32 | | QB Bruce Gradkowski | The Texans missed out on Matt Leinart earlier and now they miss out on Charlie Whitehurst. Next best is Bruce Gradkowski and they decide to give him a shot and hope that he suprisingly works. Otherwise, they may be drafting early again next year. |
