2006 SFL Mock Draft
PICKTEAMPLAYERANALYSIS
1.01
WR Brandon MarshallGM Brad Barber has already made the announcement on this. He plans to pair Marshall with last year's first round pick Braylon Edwards to create an impressive duo of receivers for Michael Vick to throw to. The rest of the NFC North better be scared.
1.02
ROLB A.J. HawkI'm surprised the Saints are yet to trade out of this spot and Ferguson may very well be the pick, but I know that GM Nathan Jones likes his athletic outside linebackers. Without trading down he may just bite the bullet and take Hawk, albeit a tad early.
1.03
RE Darryl TappGM Kevin Mullendore wants someone and I'm fairly convinced that Tapp will be the player he selects here. Tapp is his type of player and it would allow him to move Aaron Smith to RE, with Tapp taking the starting gig at LE. It would be a good move by the Jets.
1.04
LT D'Brickashaw FergusonI was convinced Houston was going with a quarterback, but unless GM Wade Pearce is bluffing, it sounds like Leinart will not be the pick here. The next best player for Houston is Ferguson, who is a complete beast and should start for 10+ seasons for the team.
1.05
DT Haloti NgataYep, free agency all but confirmed this. Baltimore sits still and grabs a favorite of GM Norbert Huszti, Haloti Ngata. This pick will be criticized, but it does fill a need and like the Terrell Suggs pick, Baltimore may very well get the last laugh.
1.06
CB Marcus MaxeyWe saw that GM Bill Ryan highly values his secondary during his tenure in Pittsburgh and after the late Paul Criswell traded Ronde Barber last year, Tampa Bay is in need of a new cornerback. It may be a tad early for Maxey, but you can't criticize the upside.
1.07
RT Ryan O'CallaghanI've heard that there are rumors of Walter Jones being shopped by the Seahawks, so an athletic replacement may be in line. Others have said Ojinnaka, but I think Ryan O'Callaghan may be more in line with what GM Rock Hewko likes in his offensive linemen.
1.08
MLB D'Qwell JacksonThere is some debate on who the best middle linebacker may be, and Jackson seems to be the overall consensus (though not mine). Indianapolis has lacked a cornerpiece defender and their move up to 1.08 will cement that player for their team.
1.09
LT Marcus McNeillCarolina surprisingly finds itself in the middle of a rebuild and focus number one has to be on creating a solid offensive line for the slough of running backs we will see over the coming years. McNeill appears the safest option at this juncture.
1.10
CB Jimmy WilliamsWe know that GM Leonard Jones likes tall, athletic cornerbacks, despite them sometimes lacking progressables. I wouldn't be surprised to see Jimmy Williams be the selection, with his 6'2" and potential for a good skew. It's not a bad pick.
1.11
RE Mario WilliamsWe know that Mario will go at some time in the first round, and rumors are that the wagons are circling on Minnesota. He's raw, but his talent is real and he could make an impact, especially if he skews up. Minnesota almost has to take the chance.
1.12
FS Pat WatkinsIt's not every decade that a 6'5" safety comes along, but the Texans, who have to do something to bolster their secondary will likely scoop Watkins up. If he doesn't go here, expect him in a Seahawks jersey in just a couple of picks. But he looks good in Houston too.
1.13
ROLB Thomas HowardI was tempted to say that GM Rock Hewko will prefer Jamar Williams, but Howard does seem like an overall specimen who can start on day one. With the Seahawks on the hot seat, Howard is both startable now, and the type of stud the Seahawks like.
1.14
DT Brodrick BunkleyIt may be a little early for Bunkley, but the Patriots have a huge hole in the middle of their defensive line and it needs to be filled. Bunkley is a career player and would work well here. The other option is middle linebacker Leon Williams.
1.15
MLB Leon WilliamsI realize that wide receivers are dropping and I'm sure that GM Kevin Mullendore will be tempted to grab one here, but with Leon Williams available, I don't know if he'll be able to help himself. He's exactly the type of middle linebacker he covets.
1.16
RT Jeremy TruebloodAtlanta is likely hoping that Marcus Maxey falls to them, but I just don't see it happening. Instead, they turn their eyes toward fixing their poor offensive line. Trueblood likely fits best with what GM Dhani Aldila likes to run, so he gets selected.
1.17
WR Cory RodgersThis won't happen. But if it does, GM Peter Fenger runs to the podium shouting "Rodgers, Rodgers, Rodgers!" He's a stud receiver that should make a massive difference on the 49ers squad that is only looking to improve after an impresive performance last year.
1.18
FS Nate SalleyIt's always good to add a tall safety to your team and Nate Salley looks like he could mature into a very solid free safety. Denver is still rebuilding and he becomes an important part of that process behind the semi-new GM Olivier Ratajczak. It's a step in the right direction.
1.19
RG Davin JosephThis could be a linebacker, but I think Miami will want to bolster their offensive line. Joseph is technically an offensive guard, but he could really play in either of the offensive tackle slots too, if GM Daren Roberts is willing to commit a position change to the player.
1.20
CB Josh LayChicago needs an extra punch in their secondary and I think 1.20 is about the time we'll see Josh Lay go off the board. GM Brent Lachapelle doesn't care about the big names, so Lay becomes one of the future cornerstones of the Chicago defense. You couldn't ask for better.
1.21
LOLB Jamar WilliamsGM Neal Wintermute isn't one to pass on the best player available, and the fact that Jamar Williams is still on the board is impressive. He'll fit in well in Minnesota purple and should make an instant impact, if given the chance to start.
1.22
QB Matt LeinartThat's right. Matt Leinart is still out there and GM Olivier Ratajczak would be more than happy to get him at this juncture, as he had to have been in consideration at 1.03 for a while before the Broncos moved out. He has some concerns, but it's a solid pick at this point.
1.23
RT Quinn OjinnakaIt's hard to see how the offensive linemen will fall in this draft, but I'm certain that GM Tyler Richardson would quickly snatch up Ojinnaka if he were to make it to this point. We would likely see him move inside, but it's possible he starts on day one.
1.24
LG Max Jean-GillesGM Tom Collins has been looking to solidify his offensive line for a while and Max Jean-Gilles may be the last piece he's looking for. It's possible he would get moved out to left tackle (that's where the current hole is), but it would be a smart selection.
1.25
WR Todd WatkinsMiami has changed up its receiving corps this offseason and what they lack is a young, tall receiver that is explosive. Unless Watkins skews down in speed, he should easily replace Billy McMullen who is now wearing a Carolina uniform.
1.26
MLB Abdul HodgeChicago really has a balanced roster and it's hard to see where they would go with this pick. Best player available may be the best route and Abdul Hodge is one of the better players still left on the board. He may even be able to start situationally.
1.27
CB Tye HillGM Romeo Mendez doesn't care about size in his secondary, so Tye Hill is a complete steal at this point in the draft for him. He should go well starting across from Sheldon Brown -- or he could find himself in nickel duty during the 2006 campaign.
1.28
CB Richard MarshallThe Cowboys may have had the best pass defense last year, but that's only because they were always down and facing the run. Another player is needed to be added to the defense and Dallas may hone in on Richard Marshall to be that player.
1.29
WR Maurice StovallSome people are mocking Stovall to Carolina in the top 10, but with the drop we've seen on receivers somehow GM Leonard Jones pulls him in at 1.29. You have to assume he'll be off the board by this point, but you really never know.
1.30
ROLB Chad GreenwayThere is one really good outside linebacker left and GM Brady Tinnin makes sure he is wearing orange and black for his career. Greenway isn't as explosive as some of his predecessors, but he will do more than enough to get the job done.
1.31
CB Jonathan JosephThis is where I think we'll start to see a run on cornerbacks, which is odd, as it's usually in the Top 20. New England's secondary is good, but starting to age. Adding a young player will make a difference for the long haul.
1.32
LOLB Freddie KeiahoHaving already added a new defensive end and middle linebacker, GM Kevin Mullendore makes it a trifecta by taking Keiaho, a fast linebacker with a lot of upside. We haven't heard his name much, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up in the first round.
