SFL records being challenged in 2006

With just 1 week left on the 2006 regular season, there are a handful of records at risk of being broken this year.

Pass Attempts

Peyton Manning needs 25 pass attempts to break his previously established record of 624 attempts set back in 2002 during their outstanding run to a Super Bowl berth.

Yards After Catch

It's crazy to think that a TE is actually in position to break this record of 544 YAC set by Eric Moulds back in 2004. But Tony Gonzalez is just 24 yards away from topping that record. It's been a magnificent year for the Atlanta Falcons TE.

Tackles For Loss

Texans MLB Al Wilson has already broken this record set in 2002 by MLB Ronald McKinnon. Al Wilson currently has 25 TFL, breaking the previous record of 24.

Forced Fumbles

Minnesota Vikings MLB Al Wilson tied the existing record of 5 forced fumbles in a single season. He is currently tied with two other Minnesota Vikings in Nick Rogers and Derrick Brooks, as well as Seahawks MLB Antonio Pierce and Packers RE Aaron Kampman.

Fumbles Recovered

Redskins CB Champ Bailey is now tied with the existing record with 4 fumbles recovered on a season. He is now sharing the record with Bears ROLB Roosevelt Colvin, Patriots CB Ashley Ambrose, Falcons LOLB Bradie James and Panthers LE Julius Peppers.

Fumble Return Yards

Julius Peppers is currently 2 yards shy of breaking the fumble return yard record. He is trailing Champ Bailey's and Saints ROLB Victor Hobson's 91 yards.

Interception Return Yards

Seahawks CB Jerry Azumah is 29 yards shy of breaking the record currently held by Saints CB Brian Kelly at 317 yards.

Pass Deflections

Buffalo Bills CB Shawn Springs is sitting at 39 deflections on the year and would need just 3 more to top San Francisco 49ers CB Aeneas Williams's 41 set back in 2003.

Team Total Offense

The Colts set this record back in 2003 with 8,393 yards on the season. The Cleveland Browns are currently at 8,054 yards in 2006. A 330 yard day in week 17 would give them the record.

Interceptions

This record was shattered by the San Diego Chargers. It was set by the 2004 Cleveland Browns at 37 and with one game to go the Chargers have 42 interceptions!

Passing Touchdowns

Unsurprisingly this record is held by the Indianapolis Colts and was set in 2003 with 54 touchdown passes. The Cleveland Browns are 3 shy of tying that record and a 4 touchdown pass day would give them the record.

Penalties

This isn't a record that teams are particularly proud of and the Philadelphia Eagles are hoping that they can reverse their 2006 trend and play a clean game in week 17. They're 3 shy of holding this record and only 1 penalty shy of tying the Eagles 2004 team total. This is not something a team wants to be consistent at.

Penalty Yards

As the Eagles are in the running for most penalties in a single season, it makes sense that they're also challenging the record for most penalty yards in a season. They are 27 yards away from breaking the record set by the Minnesota Vikings in 2004 with 847 penalty yards. The Vikings were 12-4 that year, and the Eagles are 9-6 this year. Apparently cheating is the way to victory. They must've been watching tape on the Patriots.

2 Pt Attempts

Kind of echoing the above records, 2 Pt attempts typically means you're playing catch-up and trying to shorten the lead. The San Diego Chargers have broken the record of 7 attempts held by the Cowboys, Eagles, Rams and Titans. They currently have 9 on the season.

Red Zone TDs

This record has been broken by two teams this season. It was previously set by the Vikings in 2004 with 37 redzone TDs. The Raiders currently are tied with 37 at this juncture and the Browns have 38 on the season.
