PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | LT Joe Thomas | That's right, this is a hot take. I know the pick will likely be Megatron, but in the eleventh hour I'm calling on GM Bill Ryan to have a change of heart and go with the overall best player in the draft -- a player who will start for him for 12 years. |
1.02 | | WR Calvin Johnson | Dream scenario for GM Daren Roberts. In this case, he'll likely try to trade 1.02 for a fool's ransom, but I'm not doing trades. So he gets the bonafide stud wide receiver and likely turns around and tries to trade Plaxico Burress. |
1.03 | | QB Brady Quinn | There are a lot of rumors out there about GM Anthony Cepparulo liking strong safety Sabby Piscitelli. I don't think it's out of the question, but the pick here should be Quinn. That's likely to disappoint other GMs, but it's the right move for San Diego. |
1.04 | | WR Dwayne Jarrett | The consensus #2 wide receiver off the board has been oft mocked to the Baltimore Ravens. I wouldn't be surprised if this pick ended up being Beast Mode, but I wanted to put Jarrett here and prove that atleast I can spell his first name correct. |
1.05 | | LT James Marten | It's no secret that the Bears need another offensive lineman. I think their target here may be Brady Quinn, but with him already off the board, they'll double down on Alex Smith and give him a left tackle to protect him. Marten should do just that. |
1.06 | | SS Sabby Piscitelli | The Steelers have a couple early picks and I feel like they're going to be focused in on selecting unique talent. Piscitelli is exactly that and should be starting from day one in the Pittsburgh secondary. |
1.07 | | CB Corey Graham | Green Bay is another team that I think would like to get their hands on Quinn. Like Chicago, he's gone, so they're going to draft Corey Graham, who has no business falling this far in the draft. No complaints from the Packers. |
1.08 | | CB Aaron Ross | The trading of Joey Thomas solidified the likelihood that this is a cornerback selection by the Arizona Cardinals. I wouldn't be surprised to see them move up a few picks once Graham starts sliding, but they won't be mad to take Ross, who is ready to start. |
1.09 | | RE Jay Moore | Poor Pittsburgh. I bet they were hoping to get Sabby and one of the top cornerbacks, but they just miss out. Instead, they pivot to defensive end and select Jay Moore, though they might give Gaines Adams a workout as well. |
1.10 | | LE Lamar Woodley | With Michael Strahan reaching the end of his run, Dallas will likely move him to the right side and allow a rookie to take over. With Jay Moore selected just a pick prior, Dallas elects to take Woodley over Gaines Adams, who looks like he will be falling. |
1.11 | | HB Marshawn Lynch | If Lynch doesn't get selected by Baltimore, I'd say he's a shoe-in to be off the board by the time that Carolina selects. GM Leonard Jones drafted Steven Jackson and that was a hit. Beast Mode becomes his second hit at the position. |
1.12 | | WR Jacoby Jones | San Francisco wants Kyle Orton to succeed. In order to do so, I think they continue to bring in young, elite talent at wide receiver. Robert Meacham has blazing speed, but I think his catch rating will scare people off and make Jones go before him. |
1.13 | | RE Gaines Adams | The Vikings may have just signed Ty Warren, but I think there is a good chance that Atlanta matches the offer, even though the compensation is a first round pick. In that scenario, Minnesota takes Gaines Adams and stops his fall in the first round. |
1.14 | | CB David Irons | The secondary in Atlanta is a mess. It worked for the old GM, but GM Nic St. Marie wants something different. With the top players off the board, Irons looks like the best bet for a franchise player and is worth a pick at 1.14. |
1.15 | | HB Tony Hunt | After bringing in Calvin Johnson, Miami decides to take a moment and focus on their running back of the future. Hunt is a bigger back who with a little bit of training could become a solid runner for the Dolphins. Another name worth mentioning may be Adrian Peterson. |
1.16 | | ROLB Paul Posluszny | Unfortunately, the Colts need to add a lot of talent around their roster, but outside linebacker has been one place where they have been defunct of talent. They add Posluszny to breakout star Leon Williams in the linebacking corps and hope they are set for the future. |
1.17 | | FS LaRon Landry | After selecting their future defensive end, the Cowboys finally put their focus toward safety, a position many pundits have been telling them to draft someone with for a few seasons. At this point, Landry is the best option, though the 6'4" Aaron Rouse may be tempting. |
1.18 | | RE Adam Carriker | The Dolphins missed out on all of the top defensive ends, but Carriker is still first round talent. His weakness is his strength, but we've seen players with low strength succeed at left end in the past. |
1.19 | | CB Leon Hall | Pickings are starting to get slim and with Miami's fourth pick of the first round (Tyler, is that you?), they select a high awareness cornerback that they hope has a good skew. Hall could easily be a big steal or a big bust. No way to tell. |
1.20 | | RT Mike Otto | I know the Bears already selected an offensive tackle, but this is the draft to double down on them. Chicago tells Alex Smith "we believe in you, now stay upright and win us some games." Hopefully for them the strategy works. |
1.21 | | LT Clint Oldenburg | Arizona could use some more depth on their offensive line and Oldenburg looks like one of the better players left in the draft. If he skews up in acceleration this is actually quite the steal of a pick -- one GM Tyler Richardson would be proud of. |
1.22 | | CB Eric Wright | I think Buffalo is really going to miss have Andre Woolfolk and will look to replace him in the draft. Wright doesn't have his height and needs some work on his awareness, but he's got the speed needed to keep up with the fastest of receivers. |
1.23 | | ROLB Anthony Waters | I know the Rams will likely draft an outside linebacker at this spot -- it makes a lot of sense. It could be Jon Beason, but I think Waters is the best all around player and is a very good fit for an ever improving Rams squad. |
1.24 | | MLB Davis Harris | Tennessee greatly missed the presence of Brian Urlacher last season. Too bad for them that Patrick Willis' combine was bad. Instead, they focus in on David Harris, who despite his flaws, is likely the best middle linebacker in the class. |
1.25 | | LT Tony Ugoh | I expect New England to focus on adding some offensive line depth in this draft, if they don't trade out of the selection as they are known for doing. Some people have Ugoh in the Top 10, so getting him here looks like good value. |
1.26 | | RT Doug Free | Yes, I know his strength looks low. I assume that skews up. With a decent strength skew, Free makes a solid left tackle, allowing Atlanta to move some pieces around on the offensive line. They'll need to, especially if Symons is their starter at QB. |
1.27 | | RT Joe Staley | Yep, we're seeing a run on the second group of offensive linemen in this draft and there are a couple more good options, in my opinion. Staley has dropped and New York will likely add him as he is the best player available. |
1.28 | | LG Kasey Studdard | Every year it's fun to look for the athletic freak that will drop and GM Rock Hewko will draft. This year, my money is on Kasey Studdard, who may get moved to left tackle and take over for the now departed Walter Jones. |
1.29 | | CB A.J. Davis | GM Riley Breckheimer's first ever draft selection was a cornerback in the 20s -- and it proved to be a solid hit. I don't know if A.J. Davis is a Carlos Rogers, but he provides solid value for a team needing depth in their secondary. |
1.30 | | CB Dante Hughes | Hughes is fast, but he won't be getting you any turnovers, as his hands are made out of butter. I think that GM Kevin Mullendore takes a risk on him here as the talent pool is slowly fading away. He's a solid pick for the juncture though. |
1.31 | | DT Ryan McBean | There aren't many good options are defensive tackle this year, so the Raiders take the best available, though he might be better suited long term at right end. It's not a sexy pick, but these are the types of picks that got Oakland to the Super Bowl. |
1.32 | | LG Mansfield Wrotto | The Cowboys struck gold a couple seasons back with Chris Snee in the third round. I doubt Wrotto is any close to the player he's trying to replace, but he's the best available at this juncture. At minimum, he's a placeholder until free agency. |
