Late last night I would not have anticipated that we would have a Chargers/Saints Super Bowl but it is indeed exactly what we have. It makes some sense when you see the recent form of both teams. But I thought last night we would be looking at a Browns/Football Team Super Bowl, which is what I predicted at the beginning of the season (not an adventurous prediction at all). However, lest I think I did well at predicting the season, four of the teams I had in last place in their divisions actually won their divisions. The Bills, Titans, Chargers, and Packers all won their respective divisions having been buried in my mind as the doormats at the beginning of the season. Oh well, I know nothing and now at least I've proven that.
As Breck pointed out on Discord, the Saints and Chargers finished #1 and #2 respectively in rushing yards this season. Deuce McAlister could be an MVP as he has single-handedly dominated opponents with over 1900 yards. DeAngelo Williams contributed over 500 yards as well. Meanwhile, Thomas Jones had over 1600 yards rushing with Westbrook at almost 600. Both rushing attacks just dominated.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Saints took the Cover 2 to new heights. They went 11-5 with that particular defensive playbook, while the rest of the league could only muster a 12-14 record with it.
Speaking of the defensive side of the ball, the San Diego Chargers set an SFL single season record with 45 turnovers. They had 33 interceptions, second only to the 2004 Baltimore Ravens (35), and 12 fumbles recovered. It will be very interesting to see which defense has against the other's inexperienced QB.
Prior to the 2007 playoffs, the Saints only appearance in the postseason was in the SFL's inaugural season where they lost a wildcard game 30-25 to the Chicago Bears. The Chargers also made the playoffs in 2002 and also lost in the wildcard round to the Raiders by a score of 23-20.
The Saints and Chargers have met twice in the regular season. The Saints have won both meetings.
Good luck to both teams. I hop it's an enjoyable watch!
