2008 SFL Mock Draft
PICKTEAMPLAYERANALYSIS
1.01
WR James HardyWhile I think it's a rather fool-hardy pick (heh heh), the noise around the league is that we should expect the Cardinals to select James Hardy first overall. He's raw and I don't think the player you want first overall, but there isn't a bonafide win this year.
1.02
WR Jordy NelsonWe see this a lot. Tall, fast receivers go high in the draft and end up producing average numbers at best. Nelson likely goes second but won't make the impact in Kansas City that new GM Justin Herr hopes he will. Hopefully, it doesn't burn him.
1.03
LE Chris LongThe Browns just traded away Tyler Brayton. Their move up to 1.03 wasn't their finest hour (they admit that themselves) and moving Brayton is a large signal that Long will be the guy at 1.03, who just happens to be the best player in the draft.
1.04
HB Jonathan StewartI'm pretty sure Tennessee is going to select one of the halfbacks with this selection, but if I were them, I would have rather kept Steven Jackson. I'd also bet on it not being Jonathan Stewart, but the league consensus is he will be the first drafted.
1.05
HB Clifton SmithThis is the player I assume will be the first halfback off the board, but I think the Cardinals double down on him here. With a good skew and some patient, Smith could be an absolute stud in the SFL. He fits well in Arizona.
1.06
TE Gary BarnidgeIt's been quite some time (if ever?) since we've seen a tight end go this high in the draft. I think this is the year as Arizona looks to be entirely re-branding their offense. Super Bowl winning QB Rex Grossman won't mind.
1.07
RT Carl NicksThe Bears mean business. They traded away the future in Alex Smith for a veteran that is still top of his game and will be. In order to keep Hasselbeck healthy, they need a solid right tackle. Carl Nicks looks up to the task and is quite the steal at 1.07.
1.08
RE Calais CampbellGM Leonard Jones is on the record about wanting to bring in a new pass rusher. Obviously, he would like Chris Long, but that's a pipe dream at 1.08. Campbell will be a part of the conversation, especially if Jones thinks that awareness doesn't matter at DE.
1.09
CB Aqib TalibAnother steal at this juncture. It's a poor cornerback class, yet again. Talib is the shining star of the lot and Kansas City needs to add another secondary player after trading away shutdown cornerback Carlos Rogers.
1.10
MLB Curtis LoftonThis is unfamiliar territory for New England. I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade out, but I think that a MLB might be on the board for them. Connor appears the more "ready" player, but a good skew by Lofton could get him picked.
1.11
DT Red BryantOakland suffered from Super Bowl hangover this past season and unfortunately for them, this draft class doesn't get them back in the thick of competition. I wouldn't be surprised to see them take a huge presence in the middle like Red Bryant.
1.12
RE Lawrence JacksonThe first pick of a GM's tenure is often the most telling. I think Detroit goes defensive with their pick and takes a risk on Lawrence Jackson out of USC. With a solid skew he's a very good LE and with a strength boost, he's the perfect RE.
1.13
RT Gosder CherilusI would be surprised if the Dolphins didn't select an offensive lineman at this selection, but there could be some debate in which OL. In the end, I think Cherilus's strength gets him the selection over other players, such as Jake Long.
1.14
LT Jake LongI get the sense Jacksonville is hoping that Gary Barnidge drops, but I have him going much earlier than most expect. Instead, he gets a good consolation prize in Jake Long, who can start at LT from day one on the team.
1.15
DT Frank OkamBaltimore has advertised the fact that their want a nost ackle. Okam fits that bill. While his strenght is lower than you would hope, he has the athleticism needed to succeed at the NFL level. He might eventually be moved to a 3-4 DE role.
1.16
RT Oniel CousinsIndianapolis will continue to live and die by the success of Peyton Manning. They need to make sure he's amply protected. They re-signed Chris Snee, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him move to RT and them slot Cousins in at LT.
1.17
RG Chilo RachalThis is where the run on offensive linemen is going to begin. Baltimore is going all-in on Tyler Thigpen, despite being on the hot-seat. I think their goal is 6 wins and make the big jump in 2009. Rachal helps. This could also be a QB, but I think they want a veteran as the backup.
1.18
WR Malcolm KellyAfter the first two receivers are off the board, I don't expect to see a lot going quickly. The rest are either "shorter" than people like or "slower" than people want. Kelly could bounce the right way with a good PW and I would see GM Neal Wintermute taking a shot on him.
1.19
LT Chris WilliamsI suspect that Chris Williams will have a good skew and I would suspect that GM Kevin Mullendore would identify that. This is the type of pick that the Jets succeed with and will hopefully help propel them back to the playoffs.
1.20
QB Brian BrohmIt's always good to have quarterback depth, right? I imagine with the 20th pick that GM Norbert Huszti won't be able to avoid adding depth to his QB roster, especially since he's on the hot seat. Thigpen is the guy, but more options never hurts.
1.21
LOLB Chris ChamberlainIt's odd that this is the first OLB off the board, but the needs around the league aren't that high. Chamberlain is probably the best OLB available and Green Bay could slot him in as a starter on day one. Good value.
1.22
WR Andre CaldwellI think GM Rock Hewko looks forward to me singing his praises every year. He's been more conservative with draft picks as late, but I think Andre Caldwell makes a lot of sense for the Seahawks. He's fast, has decent hands and could start in the slot.
1.23
SS Domonique BarberThe first of the Bengals two first round picks after the Kitna trade, I think GM Brady Tinnin would jump all over Domonique Barber. In fact, I'm confident Barber is gone by this point, but I forgot about him and I'm too lazy to go back and fix this.
1.24
RG Daniel DyeGM Bill Ryan went safe last year and took Joe Thomas over Calvin Johnson. I agree with the decision, but it was met with criticism. He's picking much later this year (due to trades), but I think he adds another offensive lineman.
1.25
RT Branden AlbertIt's either Sorgi Time or the David Garrard era in Cincinnati. Kitna's presence will be missed, so the Bengals need to beef up their offensive line in order to ensure that their new franchise signal caller, whoever he may be, is protected.
1.26
ROLB Keith RiversRivers stays in the state of California, heading up Interstate 5 (and then over to San Francisco) to play for the 49ers. I think San Francisco would start him on day one and if he skews well, this is a massive steal.
1.27
CB Terrell ThomasThe cornerback class looks very bad, but I think a couple of people will find gems, if they are meticulous. I would imagine the Seahawks take a flyer on a player like Terrell Thomas and hope he skews way up.
1.28
CB Leodis McKelvinThe Browns may try the same thing as well, giving a player like Leodis McKelvin a shot. He's not tall by any means, but you don't need to be tall in order to be good in the SFL. If she skews up in speed, he's fine.
1.29
QB Erik AingeWe all know that the Bills are going to draft a quarterback, it's just a question of who is left. The "big names" are disappointing, so I bet this selection is to make Erik Ainge the future quarterback of the Buffalo Bills. What interesting times we live in.
1.30
CB Dominique Rod-CromartieHouston is going for a hailmary -- the problem being, if he skews up, someone will already have drafted him much higher. In this scenario though, he's the right pick for the Texans who need a real shutdown cornerback on their roster.
1.31
ROLB Robert JamesI usually frown upon taking low awareness players when you're on the hot seat, but I think a player like Robert James could make a massive impact on the Buccaneers squad this upcoming season. He's a good pick at this juncture.
1.32
WR Arman ShieldsNew Orleans has slowly had to move on from some veterans over the years and even though they are defending champs, David Greene is nowhere a franchise quarterback; he needs weapons. Arman Shields is the type of receiver I would expect GM Nathan Jones to hone in on.
