JUSTIN IS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE FORUMS SO I AM POSTING THIS FOR HIM- AP'S HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO JUSTIN
I know there has been some debate in the past regarding building your team with rookies or veterans, so I thought it would be fun to look at the careers of QBs that have been drafted and see what kind of success rate they have had in the league thus far. The years I will be looking at primarily are 2003 to 2007.
Key Findings: - Total # of QBs drafted: 72 - Total # of QBs drafted in the first round: 17 (24%) - Average # of QBs drafted per draft: 12 QB?s per draft - # Of first round picks that made the playoffs: 6 QB?s (35%) - Carson Palmer, Rex Grossman, Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning, Matt Schaub, and Brady Quinn. - # of first round picks that made the conference championship: 4 QB?s (24%) ? Carson Palmer, Rex Grossman, Phillip Rivers, and Brady Quinn. - # of first round picks that made the Super Bowl: 3 QB?s (18%) ? Carson Palmer, Rex Grossman, and Brady Quinn. - # of first round picks that have won a Super Bowl: 2 QB?s (12%) ? Carson Palmer and Rex Grossman. - Honorable Mention: David Greene was drafted in the second round and has won a Super Bowl. - # of first round picks that have made the pro bowl: 2 QB?s (12%) ? Carson Palmer and Eli Manning. - # of first round picks that have been traded to another team: 9 (53%) ? Carson Palmer, Byron Leftwich, Rex Grossman, Tony Romo, Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, B.J. Symons, and Alex Smith. - # of first round picks that have been traded more than once: 2 QB?s (12%) ? Rex Grossman and Eli Manning. - # of first round picks to make it to the Super Bowl in their rookie year: 1 QB (6%) ? Brady Quinn.
My Personal Thoughts: - I always felt taking on a rookie QB is a commitment. My research seems to confirm this hunch. The top performing drafted QB?s took about 3 to 4 seasons before they were in top shape. This would suggest to me that you should have at least 4 to 5 seasons on your contract if you plan on building a QB from scratch. Obviously, other factors should be considered (roster, game plan, etc.), but for those just starting off or those that are bad with roster building, you should hold off on a young QB. - The amount of first round picks that were traded was surprising. I would think this goes back to my previous point, teams didn?t have the years available to develop them or didn?t have a great supporting cast. My suggestion based on these findings is for GM?s to think long term. When deciding on a rookie QB versus a veteran QB, think about your roster and how much time you realistically have to develop them. Don?t waste a high a pick on a QB you can?t groom.
