PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | CB Sean Smith | No point in messing around with this pick. The Vikings have announced that Sean Smith is the selection and we all knew that the second the moved up from 1.02 to get him. The Giants have to be wondering "what if" since a powerhouse is getting the best player in the draft. |
1.02 | | MLB James Laurinaitis | The Chiefs were worried that someone was going to jump them for this selection, so they paid a small price to move up. It was a good move for Buffalo, as they didn't have their sights set on James anyway. |
1.03 | | DT Terrance Knighton | I have to applaud GM Brandon Lindgren. He moved down twice, picking up assets, and still gets the person he wanted to select at 1.01 (though he would have likely still taken Smith). It's a good move for Buffalo, but you have to wonder what the plan is at QB. |
1.04 | | LOLB Clint Sintim | All signs point to the Seahawks selecting Sintim with this pick. He's the type of athletic freak that GM Rock Hewko likes and they have a massive gap at the position on their roster. This looks like more and more of a no-brainer. |
1.05 | | RT Phil Loadholt | I had Loadholt extremely low last time, but I'm hearing a lot of people talk about him. I think Houston wants to select a cornerback, but after trading Walter Jones, they have a massive hole at left tackle that needs to be filled immediately. |
1.06 | | ROLB Clay Matthews | I'll be honest, I'm hoping Sintim drops to 1.04. I desperately need an outside linebacker and at this juncture, I would likely trade down. If forced to make a pick, I'll probably run a private workout on Clay Matthews and hope that it's good. |
1.07 | | QB Mark Sanchez | The Colts are taking Sanchez, it's just a question of whether it's with this pick or the next pick. He's the best quarterback in the class and they can make him a balanced quarterback right away with activity points. No brainer. |
1.08 | | MLB Scott McKillop | The cornerbacks are dropping, but I feel the Colts think they have a massive need at middle linebacker. They likely are hoping Laurinaitis drops (but he won't) so they settle for second best in McKillop. |
1.09 | | LE Larry English | The Lions are in a good spot this draft. I know Michael Crabtree makes a lot of sense here, but with no chance the Cardinals select Crabtree, they may wait until 1.11 to select him. English looks to be a solid defensive end that a lot of teams are high on. |
1.10 | | C Antoine Caldwell | If someone is going to give Caldwell a spin, it's going to be the Arizona Cardinals. No way he makes it past their selection at 1.10. Funny thing is, I think Arizona finds a way to make him work and is laughing for seasons to come. |
1.11 | | WR Michael Crabtree | Detroit gambled correctly and selects Crabtree with the 11th overall pick in the draft. He's the best wide receiver by a mile and should fit nicely into their scheme as they try to work their way back toward being a contender. |
1.12 | | WR Patrick Turner | You're going to laugh at this, but GM Apolo Shapiro is likely very afraid of wide receiver injuries at this point. With the rest of his roster solidified, adding depth at the position may be his number one priority. |
1.13 | | CB Derek Cox | Okay, so no way this happens. Gosh, I need to plan my mock drafts better. But in this situation, GM Norbert Huszti races to the podium salivating and talking about "Make Baltimore Great Again!" Cox to Baltimore is a shoe-in. |
1.14 | | LT Eugene Monroe | After adding Cox, the Ravens might think about adding another cornerback, but they also need some depth at offensive line. Monroe is probably the best offensive tackle still available in the draft. Baltimore has to be happy standing pat. |
1.15 | | SS Michael Mitchell | I know there is some disagreement about the safeties, but I think some teams will target them around this point. New Orleans has likely grown tired of injuries at safety, so will double down on a new one in this draft. |
1.16 | | C Alex Mack | GM Tom Collins has been looking for his center for seasons and now Alex Mack drops right into his lap. Mack was a Brown in real life and grew tired of the organization. Doubt that happens this time around as Cleveland is actually relevant. |
1.17 | | SS William Moore | I'm sticking with my selection of William Moore for the Bengals at this slot. Moore is the type of athlete who should thrive in Cincinnati and will instantly have the loyalty of GM Brady Tinnin. It's a win/win scenario. |
1.18 | | LOLB Brian Cushing | Chicago needs a little depth at outside linebacker and with both Sintim and Matthews long gone they will likely look to the other USC outside linebacker in this draft, Brian Cushing. Cushing is more muted, but is a solid player. |
1.19 | | HB Beanie Wells | With Edgerrin James now doning the Cardinal red, the Detroit Lions have to be considering selecting Beanie Wells at some point during the draft. He's a bruiser and if he develops properly he's going to be a wrecking ball in Detroit. |
1.20 | | WR Brian Hartline | Why not more? The Cardinals are terrified of losing their receivers (i.e. their way they win games). Hartline provides competent depth for them and helps them have a full roster that they can rely on for an entire season. |
1.21 | | RE Robert Ayers | It actually looks like Washington will be selecting in the first round! Washington needs a right end so may elect for Ayers, who despite having poor awareness, has the rest of the tools necessary to be a decent right end. |
1.22 | | MLB Robert Henson | This could change if the Patriots decide to match on Barrett Ruud (got to keep the B Ruud boys together!), but Henson isn't a bad selection at 1.22 if GM Briston Redford lets them walk. Henson could turn out quite well. |
1.23 | | LE David Veikune | I'm kind of surprised Veikune isn't higher on people's lists, but the likelihood that he drops is looking more and more pronounced. Veikune is a great depth option for a Cardinals team ready to compete for a Super Bowl. |
1.24 | | DT B.J. Raji | Raji has been mocked to the Ravens before this, but they spent a lot of money on the position in free agency. Raji seems like a good fit in Cleveland, as he gives them an option to play a 3-4 if they so desire. |
1.25 | | WR Johnny Knox | The Colts need some new weapons for their rookie quarterback, but unfortunately there aren't many good wide receivers available via trade, free agency or the draft. Knox is the best available right now and he's got decent enough attributes. |
1.26 | | LE Tyson Jackson | I wouldn't be surprised to see Washington double down on their defensive line. It's been one of their better position areas over the past few years and now is sitting there defunct. Jackson and Ayers are the future. |
1.27 | | LE Paul Kruger | The run on defensive linemen started faster than Oakland likely thought it would, so they grab Kruger at this juncture. He's not fantastic, but with Oakland's roster, he should be able to perform at least up to snuff. |
1.28 | | CB Keenan Lewis | It's crazy how the cornerbacks have dropped in this mock. It won't happen like that in real life, but this is a fun alternate reality. Lewis is a steal at 1.28 for the Colts and should help to build up their post-Manning era. |
1.29 | | WR Mike Wallace | Teams covet wide receivers and adding the "best possible" is always a consideration for the position. Miami also covets these types of players and may make a run for Mike Wallace near the end of the first round. Not a wonderful selection, but it works. |
1.30 | | FS Louis Delmas | They did bring back Chris Harris via free agency, but I like the Colts to select another safety in the first round. Delmas fits well on their roster and should work well at either free or strong safety in the long term. |
1.31 | | RE Michael Johnson | Looking at the Vikings roster, they have more holes than most people probably think they have. Defensive end could use some depth, but all the good players are already off the board. A good workout on Michael Johnson may make a difference, however. |
1.32 | | RT Troy Kropog | I'm pretty sure the Titans choose to select offensive line at this position. Just like with cornerbacks, offensive linemen have dropped in this draft and Kropog is a solid fit for the team. He likely moves inside to guard and starts immediately. |
