2009 SFL Mock Draft
By Neal Wintermute

Here's a quick mock draft for tomorrow night. I'm sure this isn't completely accurate. As others have said, mocking this draft feels really difficult but here's a stab at it anyway.

1- CB-Sean Smith- This is my pick so obviously I see the reasoning here. I think he’s the best overall prospect at a key position. I also think he’s the best prospect we have ever had at the CB position.

2- MLB-James Laurinaitus- The Chiefs have expressed an interest in Laurinaitus for a while and he’s a great MLB. Great physical attributes along with good awareness and tackle. Justin is trying to built something in KC and Laurinaitus will be a significant part of that build.

3- DT-Terrance Knighton- The Bills traded down twice acquiring assets. Since I was one of the teams to trade with the Bills I will let others judge the merits of those trades. However, Terrance Knighton is going to be a stud wherever they choose to play him.

4- TE-Jared Cook- Cook is a prospect along the lines of Gary Barnridge of the Eagles. The Seahawks like freak athletes so Cook makes sense. Of course, Rock could go totally of the board and it wouldn’t surprise me.

5- CB-Derek Cox- Cox is a clear step down from Smith but Cox is still very good and the Texans have needed young CB’s for what feels like forever. They have been really successful without prioritizing the position. Cox can change that.

6- LOLB-Clint Sintim- Sintim is a stud. I think he’s a top 5 player in this draft and if the Cowboys can get him here, they will do well. OLB’s matter in this league and Sintim is going to be of the caliber of a Karlos Dansby.

7- WR-Michael Crabtree- The WR’s in this draft are fascinating to me. Bardsen and Turner are the big possession guys but Crabtree feels like a guy that will get a positive skew. I love his strength and acceleration. Any of three WR’s could go here and after, but I think the Colts like a guy like Crabtree more than the other two.

8- QB-Mark Sanchez- I don’t the love the QB’s in this draft but if you can get a tendency change on Sanchez he has a chance to be good. Manning is better but in a couple of seasons Sanchez can be a starter.

9- RG-Andy Levitre- My favorite OL in this draft. He’s got all the physical attributes to be elite. He’s not a big guy per se but those attributes are top 10 worthy for sure. Levitre could go higher but the Lions would be very happy to see him at #9.

10- RT-Phil Loadholt- Will mentioned in his second mock that Loadholt was hearing a lot of chatter around him. I understand why. GM’s value the height and weight he possesses. Attributes progress but physical size does not.

11- CB-Sherrod Martin- I don’t know if the Lions will gamble on Martin because of his AWR but his physical attributes are elite. Can the Lions be patient enough to wait for his development? I think so.

12- LE-David Veikune- This would be unfortunate for the rest of the league, but the Cardinals getting another DL looks like it could be in the cards. This team is a juggernaut.

13- CB-Keenan Lewis- The Ravens said good bye to legend Chris McAlister so they need fresh talent at a key position. Lewis can provide that.

14- MLB-Tyrone McKenzie- Back-to-back defensive players for the Ravens with McKenzie. The Ravens traded away Ray Lewis and need to find a replacement. McKenzie is sneaky good with long-term talent for this league.

15- LOLB-Brian Cushing- Cushing is a close second to Sintim so for the Saints to walk away with him at #15 would be really good value. I’m not sure what the Saints see as their needs so that’t the only pause I would have hear with him.

16- Browns- CB-Kevin Barnes- The Browns recently pointed out that their best CB has 88 SPD so yes I think it makes sense to have them take a CB in round 1.

17- HB-Beanie Wells- I’m a little reluctant to mock Wells to the Bengals here not because they don’t want a HB but because I don’t think the HB’s in this draft are very good. Wells is the consensus #1 guy at the position and I think the need is legit.

18- RT-Troy Kropog- The Bears are an enigma to me. I think they are really good team every year and every year they fall short of the wins I expect. Kropog could be a welcome addition to their offensive line. I think it’s only a matter of time before the Bears become a force.

19- WR-Patrick Turner- The Lions have three first round picks after they moved Brandon Marshall. Two seasons ago it was Marshall and Edwards now both have left Detroit, so I think Turner will be a welcomed addition to the team.

20- LT- Jamie Thomas- It’s hard to know what needs the Cardinals might have left. I guess they could go center here, but I’ve gone instead with Thomas instead. He’s a big athletic linemen.

21- LE-Tyson Jackson- The Redskins don't typically have needs or if they have them address them through the draft. However, this year they have needs and they are going to address them through the draft. At least, that looks like the plan for now. Jackson is the type of DE they like. Big frame, strong, still with good athleticism.

22- LOLB-Ray Mauluga- The Patriots have just matched on Barrett Ruud so I think they could be looking at an upgrade at LOLB. Mauluga could be that by next season.

23- MLB-Robert Henson- The Cardinals are picking from a position of little to no need. Henson has a high ceiling so I think they could go Henson here.

24- ROLB-Marcus Freeman- The Browns have managed to be competitive in years past with some really slow OLB's. Now's there chance to change that. Freeman has both speed and size.

25- DT-Sen’Derrick Marks- The Colts have five picks in this draft. I think one of those picks goes to address a DT. Marks is a really good one even if he is the third one of the board.

26- CB-Macho Harris- The Redskins like their CB talent. It's not bad, but I think they could use more particularly when you look at the CB's they have had there in years past. Harris is a raw talent with good upside.

27- LE-Larry English- The Ravens have recently revealed a move to a 4-3. This makes me wonder if a guy like English is on their radar since Suggs in not a 4-3 DE (IMHO). But if he doesn't go there, I see him going to the Raiders here. And the Raiders know how to get production out of a guy like English.

28- TE-Chase Coffman- The Colts need a TE but Cook is long gone. I really like Coffman though and think he could be a star. Their plethora of picks allows them to go TE in round 1.

29- RT-Sebastian Vollmer- The Dolphins have an obvious need at RT. Historically Daren doesn't love spending high picks on OL. However, it's clear he sees an organizational need and this draft has plenty of talent. I have them taking Vollmer though I'm not sure how Daren rates him. I'm more confident of the the position than the pick.

30- SS-Patrick Chung- I don't consider this a great safety draft, but Chung is my highest ranked SS. He's not tall, but if the skew is kind, he will have the speed.

31- ROLB-Aaron Maybin- I have my Vikings taking Maybin here at #31. Though Peek is on the roster and quite capable of player the position as a starter, I am always looking for an update. Maybe is the type of OLB I like.

32- ROLB-Clay Matthews- The Titans continue the dip into the OLB position pool. Matthews is a athletic guy lacking though strength. I don't think that will matter to Gary as he reloads his defensive roster.
