Mock Draft - Part II
By Tom Collins
Special to sfl-football.com

Disclaimers: This mock is based on rumors and gut feelings of where I think the players will go, rather than what I think they should do.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.01 CB Sean Smith

Analysis: This is a lock. The Vikings announced it. If you do a mock and get this wrong you should be shunned.

1.02 MLB James Lauranaitis

Analysis: I don't think it's the best thing for the Chiefs. I would have liked to have seen them move down in the draft, but from what I'm hearing this is the direction they're going.

1.03 DT Terrance Knighton

Analysis: The Bills moved down from 1.01 to 1.03 in two trades and I don't feel that they're working to move down again. This tells me that they're content getting one of the top 3 guys, and I feel it's whoever is left over between Lauranaitis and Knighton.

1.04 TE Jared Cook

Analysis: Nobody ever knows what Rock will do, but we all know he loves super athletic players and Jared Cook, barring a poor skew, is definitely that guy with good size and 90 SPD at TE!

1.05 CB Derek Cox

Analysis: I think they go with a CB here after trading Deltha O'Neal and I believe Cox is the 2nd best CB in this class.

1.06 QB Mark Sanchez TRADE ALERT!

Analysis: Concerned that the Colts are rumored to be moving up to take QB Mark Sanchez, the Lions instead make that leap to secure their guy. After the previous GM traded Michael Vick for peanuts, the Lions need to get their guy and start the development while GM Scott Gardiner has a fresh 3 year contract. The Lions trade 1.11 & 2.19 for 1.06.

1.07 QB Matthew Stafford

Analysis: The Colts are disappointed that they just got leeped for their main target in Mark Sanchez. Still, Matthew Stafford is a good second option and while they could potentially get him later, you never know as there are always surprise QB selections every draft and if Stafford goes before the Colts get to him, who do they roll with then?

1.08 LOLB Clint Sintim

Analysis: Like the first mock, I think Sintim is a real possibility here. He could immediately start without requiring a position change and associated AWR hit.

1.09 LG Andy Levitre

Analysis: The Lions had a lot of draft capital and after trading up to 1.06, they still had a top 10 pick to play with. In the original mock I had them going with Michael Oher, but due to the way things played out, my #1 OL in the draft was available and a no brainer here.

1.10 RT Michael Oher

Analysis: It's difficult to find areas of need for the Cardinals but OG could be areas they focus on. They have a legit RB now, with an upgraded OL perhaps they become more balanced on offense? Or at least more efficient when they do run.

1.11 CB Keenan Lewis TRADE ALERT!

Analysis: When the Cowboys traded up to 1.06 by trading their LT, RG and S, Billy said he had a plan. I'm not sure what that plan was or is. I have to assume they didn't trade perfectly good OL to then go and draft rookies, so I'm not considering OL here. I would imagine CB is high on the list. I feel that Lewis is the #3 CB in the class despite leaving him off my 1st mock. That was accidental and I thought I had him selected by a team but was mistaken.

1.12 RT Tony Kropog

Analysis: I had Cardinals going Kropog here and feel like that's still a good possibility that they double down on their OL. There are only so many spots they can fill. Of course they could always draft BPA and trade guys they have on their roster, but they aren't really improving if they do that.

1.13 CB Kevin Barnes

Analysis: Norbert said that he is moving to a 4-3 scheme and doesn't need a MLB. To me, that screams "Norbert is going after a MLB!" Otherwise let the mocks be wrong so nobody sees it coming. But, I think CB is a bigger need for them and that may be the direction they're truly going. MLB Bart Scott is pretty good still.

1.14 HB Beanie Wells

Analysis: Jamal Lewis is age 30 and has regressed the past 2 off-seasons. With a young QB and on the hot seat, the Ravens need to rely on a strong running game to get them to 7 wins this year. Jamal may still be the guy, but Norbert appears to be planning for the future and confident he's going to save the team.

1.15 LE Larry English

Analysis: I still like Larry English for the Saints. Prior to the skew he's 87 SPD, 74 STR, 81 AGI, 86 ACC. The knock on him would be his size, if you believe it's a factor, as he's 6'2" 255lbs. I think he's athletic enough to succeed.

1.16 CB Malcolm Jenkins

Analysis: The Browns 2 starters prior to FA were 88 SPD Rashean Mathis and 2nd year player Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Not exactly ideal for a team that is trying to get over the hump to the SB. The only CB acquired in FA was a slow, vet CB named Nick Harper. CB is definitely a big need for them.

1.17 LE David Veikune

Analysis: The Bengals were shopping Kalimba Edwards in the past and Brady Tinnin has said he would be interested in a DE. It's obviously not to replace Darryl Tapp and have to assume they're ready to move on from Kalimba. Veikune is a similar mold to their previous 1st round DE Tapp and could be at play here for the Bungalows.

1.18 ROLB Marcus Freeman

Analysis: This is a holdover pick from the first mock. I like Freeman and think he is a really good fits for the Bears.

1.19 LT William Beatty

Analysis: While developing a rookie QB, I think the emphasis has to be showering him with targets and keeping him upright. The rookie year is where the players develop the quickest, and if they get injured they can't improve. Keeping your QB from taking hits reduces the risk of injury.

1.20 DT B.J. Raji

Analysis: I know that Apolo says he would rather give up the run instead of the pass, but what if you gave up neither? Raji is a big, strong man that could plug the holes, forcing teams to pass against a very talented secondary.

1.21 LE Tyson Jackson

Analysis: Same thoughts as before, the more that Bryan is pushing WRs Kelley Washington and Ted Ginn Jr in trade, the more I believe he's angling for a WR. But he can get by just fine with his WR group as is, but I can't say the same at LE.

1.22 WR Michael Crabtree

Analysis: Another same pick from the first time around. It's a good roster and this seems to be a pretty good fit for them.

1.23 TE Chase Coffman

Analysis: I know the Cardinals recently signed TE Heath Miller but he isn't someone I have a lot of faith in. Apolo mentioned that he wants the TE to block, although I wonder if he would ever run the ball if given the choice with the WRs he has. But given those comments, I think Coffman can be both a vertical, pass catching threat and someone who can hold his own while run blocking.

1.24 ROLB Clay Matthews

Analysis: After losing ROLB Kirk Morrison to a massive deal for his ability, Matthews fills a void and requires no position change.

1.25 C Antoine Caldwell

Analysis: I think C Eric Wood is tempting here, but a 95 AWR Center with a rookie QB is probably enough to get Caldwell selected over Wood. I've seen some mocks have Alex Mack going ahead of Wood, but I think Wood is in a 1A/1B situation with Caldwell.

1.26 WR Ramses Barden

Analysis: Same thoughts as last time. Bryan Mellon commented on Maurice Stovall and how he's a big, dependable target to keep the chains moving. Pair that with Bryan's thoughts on running the ball leads to winning, he may not want a super athletic WR and instead a big guy who can make some tough catches.

1.27 MLB Robert Henson

Analysis: Wow. If this guy falls all the way to 27 and the Raiders it would be tremendous value and a mistake for the AFC.

1.28 TE Shawn Nelson

Analysis: Another threat to pair with QB Matthew Stafford, Nelson is arguably the second best TE in this class behind Jared Cook, but the Cardinals prefering someone with more run blocking ability allows Nelson to slip a bit further than I think he should.

1.29 RT Phil Loadholt

Analysis: I like this pick from the original mock as well, especially since Daren Roberts is shopping this pick and looking for an impactful RT, although it sounds like he doesn't want a rookie while he is developing a young QB.

1.30 RG Kraig Urbik

Analysis: I picked RT Sebastian Vollmer for them last time but it would be to move him to Guard. I think Urbik is similar and it makes more sense to go with Urbik as he wouldn't require a position change and AWR hit.

1.31 DT Sen'Derrick Marks

Analysis: Originally didn't have him going in the first round, not because of talent but because of need. But I think he would be excellent value for any team that is willing to pull the trigger on him.

1.32 RT Sebastian Vollmer

Analysis: The Titans OL is clearly in need of some improvements and they have their work cut out for them. I wonder if they would be open to trading this pick to collect some 2nds or to trade it for a couple of OL they could start.
