This is an article looking at the histories of the franchises in the SFL's AFC East.
Division Title
2002- Patriots
2003- Patriots
2004- Patriots
2005- Patriots
2006- Bills
2007- Bills
2008- Jets
It’s quite incredible that the Jets first division crown was last season. Of course they went on to win the Super Bowl after winning the division crown so that’s making the most of it. Also quite surprising is that the Dolphins have yet to win a division title, though they did make a Super Bowl appearance in 2004, a year the Patriots won the division.
Playoff Records
Bills- 0-2
Dolphins- 5-2
Jets- 4-3
Patriots 4-6
The Dolphins playoff record is remarkable. They’ve only been to the playoffs in 2003 and 2004 but when they get there they win. One other note on the playoff records. It has been fairly common to see AFC East teams play each other in the playoffs. For example: Dolphins vs Patriots (2003), Dolphins vs Patriots (2004) and Patriots vs Bills (2006.)
Regular Season Records
Bills- 50-62 (2 winning seasons)
Dolphins- 57-54-1 (4 winning seasons)
Jets- 74-38 (6 winning seasons)
Patriots- 76-36 (6 winning seasons)
We have known for some time that the AFC East has been the best division in the SFL. These regular season numbers are more proof of it. The Jets have only missed a winning season once and that season they were .500. The Bills have the overall worst regular season record and yet have two straight division titles in 2006 and 2007. The Dolphins overall record is a bit deceiving because in their inaugural season they went 4-12. Take that away and their record shoots way up.
SFL Individual Records
As a rookie QB, Sage Rosenfels of the Dolphins holds the record for the most fumbles in a game with 5 against the Bears in week 11 of the 2002 season.
Rashard Anderson, formerly of the Jets, is tied with Lito Sheppard then of the Lions for the most interception returns yards in a game with 132 vs the Saints in week 12 of 2005.
Jimmy Williams of the Jets is also the only defensive player to score two TD’s in a playoff game. He did so against the Browns in 2008.
In that same game against the Browns, Jake Plummer threw for a record 446 yards and 6 TD’.s Both numbers are post-season records. Noteworthy is that in the same game, Philip Rivers threw the second most TD’s in the post-season with 5.
Musa Smith, formerly of the Patriots holds the records both for rushing yards and rushing attempts in a game with 230 and 31 respectively. They happened in different games however. His 230 yard rushing effort was in 2006 against the Bills and his 31 rushing attempts occurred against the Bengals in 2005.
Matt Light of the Patriots is in a three way tie with Chris Samuels and Tre’ Johnson for the most pancakes in a playoff game. He had 13 pancakes against the Browns in 2008.
Under the category of less desirable records, John David Booty of the Bills owns the both the rookie and overall record for most interceptions with 39.
Musa Smith, again formerly of the Patriots owns the rookie record both for rushing yards and rushing attempts. In 2003, he ran for 1956 yards on 400 attempts. The 400 attempts is also an overall season record.
Josh Reed, formerly of the Bills, owns the rookie record for longest catch with a 93 yard catch in week 11 of the 2002 season against the Bengals.
Mike Williams, formerly of the Bills, owns the rookie season record for sacks allowed with 14 during the 2002 season.
Richard Seymour of the Patriots owns the single season record for sacks with 21 during the 2003 season.
