2009 Season Records

As the conclusion of the 2009 season approaches, I wanted to take a look at the current season records to see if any of them have either been broken or can be broken in week 17. Let me preface this first by saying many of the major records are legit records, meaning they are difficult to be broken. However, there are a few records on both sides of the ball that have the potential to be broken. Here's a look at those records already broken or in jeopardy of being broken, starting with the offense first.

Offense

Passing
If you have ever browsed the season record books and for that matter the career record books, then you will know it's really the Peyton Manning hall of records. He owns almost of the positive records including yards, TD's, attempts, and completions. However this season there is one player who can put his name up there in the season records.

Yards- Peyton Manning owns the record in 2005 while with the Colts with 5622. He also currently owns second, third, and fifth. But Daunte Culpepper sits fourth all-time with 5099. It will take a massive performance in week 17 to get to that records, 523 to be exact, but if Culpepper passes 67 more yards he will move into 3rd place.

TD's- Peyton Manning holds the record with 49 TD's with the Colts in the 2002 season. He also holds second place, but Culpepper is in 3rd with 44. If he can throw 5 TD's this week he can tie and 6 would set the record.

Completions- Peyton Manning also holds the record for completions in a season (Are you sensing a trend?). But Culpepper sits in second only 4 completions behind. Of all three records, this one certainly looks like the most attainable.

Rushing

Yards- Priest Holmes currently holds the record with 2191 yards. He did that with the Chiefs during the 2003 season. Jonathan Stewart, in only his second season is currently in 3rd with 1991 yards. He needs 201 yards to break the record. He needs 134 yards to pass second place Ahman Green.

TD's- There's a three way tie for the lead in rushing TD's. That lead is shared by Deuce McAlister and Steven Jackson. Jackson did it twice, once with the Titans and one with the Cardinals. Stewart is one behind them and has a very realistic chance at tying and breaking that record.

Attempts- The current record for attempts in a season is 400 by Musa Smith in his rookie season with the Patriots in 2003. Matt Forte of the Raiders currently sits in 4th place only 16 carries behind him. This is also a pretty realistic record to be shattered should Forte play in week 17.

Receiving

Catches- Reggie Wayne is the man when it comes to receiving. The Manning-Wayne combo was dominant for many seasons. Reggie Wayne holds the record for catches in a season with 125. Randy Moss is not going to get there but he currently sits in 5th place with a 100. 7 catches would move him into fourth place in that category.

Defense

Tackles- MLB-Jamie Sharper currently holds the record for tackles in a season with 145 with the Broncos in 2005. But Angelo Crowell of the Eagles is only 10 behind and has a realistic chance of setting the record if he has an active week 17. He's a virtual lock to get 2nd as he only needs two tackles to do so.

TD's- In 2005 Brian Kelly of the Saints had 5 defensive TD's. Joey Thomas of the Eagles currently has 3 defensive TD's. Anything is possibly, but it's not really likely that Thomas can get there, but it's still a top 5 season in that category even if he doesn't add to it this week.

OK so there's a look at the current 2009 seasons that have the potential to set records. We'll see what week 17 brings.
