This article looks at the histories of the franchises in the SFL's AFC South.
Division Titles
2002- Colts
2003- Colts
2004- Colts
2005- Titans
2006- Jaguars
2007- Titans
2008- Titans
2009- Texans
The AFC North was dominated early by Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, and Reggie Wayne. One look at the record books and you will see the offensive explosion this trio put on display. However, the Colts grip on the division was lost in 2005 and has yet to be regained. In 2009 the Texans finally broke through winning the division for the first time. Both the Colts and Titans are tied for three division titles a piece.
Playoff Records
Colts- 2-3
Jaguars- 0-2
Texans- 0-4
Titans- 2-3
The AFC South does not have a particularly impressive history when it comes to the playoffs. The teams are a combined 4-12 in the post-season with the Colts and Titans leading the way both with 2-3 records. The Jaguars and Texans have yet to register a post-season victory.
Regular Season Records
Colts- 67-61 (3 winning seasons)
Jaguars- 46-82 (2 winning seasons)
Texans- 57-71 (4 winning seasons)
Titans- 63-65 (5 winning seasons)
The regular season has not been kind to the AFC South. The Colts are the only team that possesses a winning record during the regular season, though the Titans are not far away. The Colts started out with three excellent seasons but have not yet been able to recapture their glory. The Titans meanwhile have had 5 winning seasons during their eight years, but the two of the three losing seasons were really bad. It’s a division that has had its challenges in keeping up with the rest of the league.
SFL Individual Records
Peyton Manning, formerly of the Colts, owns virtually every passing game record. He has the most passing yards in a game with 689 against the Seahawks in week 16 of the 2005 season. That game must have felt like it was on rookie mode, but of course it wasn’t. He also holds 3rd place for the most attempts in a game with 59. This was accomplished against the Titans in week 17 of the 2007 season. He is listed as both 2nd and 3rd in most completions in a game as well. He had 35 completions against the Bille in week 10 of the 2005 season and he had 34 completions in the above mentioned game against the Seahawks. Additionally, he has thrown for 7 TD’s twice in a game, which is tied for the record. He did it in the above mentioned Seahawks game and also against the Jaguars in week 15 of the 2002 season. Peyton Manning, while he was with the Colts, is one of the most prolific players the SFL has ever seen and likely will ever see. And he hasn’t let up much since being traded away either.
Steven Jackson, formerly of the Titans, is tied for second in rushing TD’s in a game with 4. He did this against the Buccaneers in week 6 of the 2007 season.
Kassim Osgood of the Jaguars holds the record for most receiving yards in a single game with 359. He did this in a week 14 game in 2005 against the Colts. Marvin Harrison is 3rd on the same list with 308 yards against the Broncos in week 17 of the 2004 season. In that same game, Harrison also set the record for most catches in a game with 15. He’s tied with Travis Taylor, formerly of the Ravens. Back to Osgood for a second, in the same game he set the receiving yards record he also set a record for most TD catches with 5 and most yards after catch with 178. Two great receivers making their mark from the AFC South.
Keith Brooking, formerly of the Jaguars, set the mark for most tackles for loss in a game with 5 against the Falcons in week 2 of the 2007 season. The Falcons happened to be Brooking’s former team as well. He shares this record with H.B. Blades (Buccaneers), Julius Peppers (Panthers), Al Wilson (Texans), and Terry Pierce (Redskins among possibly others).
Simeon Rice, formerly of the Buccaneers, has the record for most sacks in a game with 7. He accomplished this against the Bengals in 2006. This could have been a preseason game as it is listed as week 0.
Justin Miller of the Colts has the 4th most interception return yards in a game with 130 against the Cardinals in week 17 of the 2005 season. In that same game Miller had 2 defensive TD’s which also ties him for the record in that category.
As far as the playoffs goes, Peyton Manning formerly of the Colts has the 2nd most yards passing in a game with 440 against the Raiders in the 2002 playoffs. He also holds the 2nd and 4th most passing attempts in a playoff game with 47 and 44. Both were in the 2002 playoffs, one against the Ravens and the other against the Raiders. In those two games he had 29 completions a piece which is the record for completions in a playoff game.
Aaron Rodgers, formerly of the Texans, is in a tie for 3rd for most times sacked in a playoff game with 5. The Raiders did this in the 2008 playoffs.
Brock Huard, formerly of the Colts, is in 4th place for the longest pass thrown in a playoff game. He threw an 83 yard completion against the Rams in 2002. Eli Manning of the Titans is in 5th place on the same list with an 82 yard completion against the Raiders in the 2008 playoffs.
Peerless Price of the Titans has the 2nd most receiving yards in a playoff game with 251 against the Raiders in the 2008 playoffs. Reggie Wayne, former division rival is in 5th place on the same list with 203 yards against the Dolphins in the 2004 playoffs.
Teammates Peerless Price and Anquan Boldin of the Texans are 2nd and 3rd respectively in most catches in a playoff game with 11 and 10. They both did it in the same game as the Raiders in 2008.
Marcus Pollard, formerly of the Colts, hols the playoff record for most yards after catch in a game with 136. He did this against the Rams in 2002. In that same game he caught an 83 yard reception, good enough for 4th in that category. Peerless Price of the Titans had an 82 yards reception which puts him in 5th on the same list.
Former Colt, Tre’ Johnson is tied for the record for most pancakes in a playoff game with 13. He did this against the Ravens in 2002.
