PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | WR Jonathan Baldwin | The worst kept secret in the league. Everyone knows that Breck wants Baldwin and he's going to be the player that Mark Sanchez tries to officially launch his career with -- that's if Breck doesn't dish Sanchez to someone. |
1.02 | | RB Daniel Thomas | It's interesting that the 49ers are in this position, but Thomas looks like the type of running back that can change a team. San Francisco may look to take compensation for Brandon Jackson and go the route of Thomas. |
1.03 | | CB Ras-I Dowling | Part of me thinks GM Rock Hewko takes Richard Sherman because of his love of all things Seahawks. But he needs to win games to keep the Seahawks, so Dowling is the better choice for his roster. |
1.04 | | WR A.J. Green | The first official pick of the GM Phillip Mellon era and it's a great one! Green is 100% the correct pick for a team that is in a division that continues to get tougher and tougher. Carolina has a small window and Green keeps it open. |
1.05 | | CB Richard Sherman | What a great time to be a Dolphin. They can literally sit here at 1.05 and wait for a top tier talent to drop to them. Sherman looks great and will likely start right away for a Miami team looking for some energy. |
1.06 | | CB Cortez Allen | 6'1" and super fast. The Jaguars could use players elsewhere, but they've got some cornerbacks who are going to hit regression VERY hard this coming offseason. Allen gives them long-term security. |
1.07 | | DT Kendrick Ellis | This is the type of player that Cohen likes to bring in. He's extremely unique, but I could see him moving to either defensive end position, as his strength doesn't allow him to play defensive tackle. |
1.08 | | LT Anthony Castonzo | The Redskins have always had success in the trenches and Castonzo is the type of player who could easily become a career Redskins playing at either tackle position. He's an easy choice here. |
1.09 | | RT Tyron Smith | No complaints from new GM Tom Collins here -- he knows he can get either Castonzo or Smith. While I think he would prefer Castonzo, the big Tyron Smith might be the best bet to keep Ben Roethlisberger healthy. |
1.10 | | MLB Chris White | While he jokes about moving up for Daniel Thomas, the Pittsburgh Steelers need someone in the middle of their defense and Chris White is a unique talent at the position. He should solidify their squad. |
1.11 | | WR Kris Durham | One person has already mocked Durham to me and really, I'm not sure what direction I'm going...so why not? Durham is a tall receiver that gives McNabb three great targets. It's a pity he likely plays the slot. |
1.12 | | ROLB Mason Foster | Imagine getting the best outside linebacker in the class at 12th overall? That's what happens here though and the Dolphins reap the rewards as they begin to completely rebuild their defense. |
1.13 | | WR Vincent Brown | Rumors are this pick is on the move for a wide receiver, so for the time being I'm going to mock Vincent Brown here to the Packers. The Cardinals likely end up picking here and it's unlikely they nab a receiver. |
1.14 | | RE Robert Quinn | The defensive resurgence continues in Miami. Richard Sherman. Mason Foster. Now Robert Quinn. This will be a terrifying defense around the year 2013. Not the type of team you want to match up against. |
1.15 | | CB Chimdi Chekwa | Another cornerback? Miami could use some additional defense as offense isn't their issue. Chekwa might not be as talented as Sherman, but he could definitely find a place with some proper development. |
1.16 | | LG John Moffitt | The "Apolo Era" begins in Tennessee and I feel the team is going to try and find extremely unique talent to build out their roster, similar to what worked in Arizona. That screams offensive guard John Moffitt to me. |
1.17 | | CB Jimmy Smith | The Patriots are going to need some young cornerbacks to develop, or they're going to have a rough time competing in the AFC East soon. Jimmy Smith is a good, tall cornerback who should make a difference. |
1.18 | | SS Austin Yancy | Domonique Barber has been traded. Why would Arizona trade a key component of their secondary? Because they see the 6'3" Yancy available in the draft. Yancy probably drops and the Cardinals scoop him up. |
1.19 | | FS Robert Sands | Speaking of tall safeties...what about the 6'4" Robert Sands? He's not quite as athletic as Yancy, but he plays a different position where athleticism isn't quite as important. And he's 6'4". The Eagles draft him. |
1.20 | | C Tim Barnes | It's all about Brady Quinn in San Diego as he finally appears ready to emulate his rookie season. The Chargers barely missed the postseason and keeping Quinn healthy is their number one priority. |
1.21 | | RG Caleb Schlauderaff | This is the interesting part of the draft where personal preferences begin to dictate the players that will be selected. Houston needs some interior OL and Schlauderaff (say that five times fast) looks to be the best choice. |
1.22 | | DT Phil Taylor | When you here about a nose tackle, you think about someone like Phil Taylor. Weighing in at 355 lbs, he could probably play defensive tackle, but may make more sense as a 3-4 defensive end. |
1.23 | | TE Larry Donnell | The Raiders appear to be in rebuild mode. Donnell might be the best player available to them. While he's lost a lot of weight (100 lbs.), he's still likely a top tight end in this draft due to his strength. |
1.24 | | DT Nick Fairley | I think the Saints were hoping that Phil Taylor drops to them, but Nick Fairley is a nice, athletic defensive tackle who could be really good if he skews up. That's a big question, but GM Nathan Jones has done well with selections like this. |
1.25 | | RT Ben Ijalana | We saw last season what the Patriots could do when Tom Brady is healthy. Drafting someone like Ijalana at this juncture should help to keep him healthy and upright for another few seasons. |
1.26 | | MLB Akeem Dent | The middle linebackers are the quality players I currently expect to drop in this draft and the Ravens could desperately use a new one. They grab Akeem Dent and start him on day one in the center of their defense. |
1.27 | | HB Mikel LeShoure | It took a while, but the Dolphins finally grab an offensive player. LeShoure is better than any running currently on their roster and unless they nab one in free agency, should be on their day 1 roster. |
1.28 | | RT Derek Sherrod | The Bears have consistently been one of the better teams of the past few seasons, though their Matt Hasselbeck window is closing. Getting some quality offensive linemen in to keep him upright is important. |
1.29 | | RE J.J. Watt | Drafting in the first round and the Arizona Cardinals. Name a better duo. They've done it so much that it's led to this -- selecting quality depth. Watt is a great player for the end of the first round. |
1.30 | | ROLB Von Miller | Outside linebackers tend to fall and it's insane that Von Miller is still available. He's an instant upgrade for a Browns team that is under new management. Great value at the end of the first round. |
1.31 | | LT Byron Stingily | GM Apolo Shapiro has something planned and I think drafing unique offensive linemen early in the draft is the best way to do it. Stingily is unique, but could easily be a quality starter with development. |
1.32 | | WR Tandos Doss | I wouldn't be surprised if the Cardinals move one of their big receivers in a massive trade this offseason. If they do, they need a replacement and Doss should fit in nicely. Heck, he could even be a good WR4. |
