PICK | TEAM | PLAYER | ANALYSIS |
1.01 | | WR Jonathan Baldwin | All but confirmed at this point. There's no way that Breck moves off this pick -- the main concern? Baldwin is great but who throws to him? Indianapolis traded their franchise quarterback and then didn't sign one. |
1.02 | | HB Daniel Thomas | Brandon Jackson is officially a Houston Texan. Anyone doubting that Daniel Thomas wouldn't be going to San Francisco has to feel proven wrong at this point. Thomas looks like he'll be a great fit. |
1.03 | | CB Ras-I Dowling | Yes, the pick has a high likelihood to be Richard Sherman because of homerism, but Dowling fits better into the Seattle secondary that just traded away Drayton Florence, a longstanding member of the unit. |
1.04 | | WR A.J. Green | The Panthers just spent a lot of money to bring in quarterback Drew Stanton. He needs targets and A.J. Green is a fantastic player who should make a quick splash into the SFL. A win here for Carolina. |
1.05 | | CB Richard Sherman | GM Daren Roberts hasn't moved from this spot and he knows he'll get one of the top 5 players. What a spot to be in, especially for a team that is rebuilding. Sherman will be an immediate starter. |
1.06 | | CB Cortez Allen | I think a lot of us expected the Jaguars to match on Nnamdi Asomugha, but he's now a Dallas Cowboys. This means Jacksonville needs some more athleticism at cornerback and Cortez Allen is the last of the top three options. |
1.07 | | DT Kendrick Ellis | I'm thinking that GM Gary Cohen may have tipped his hand to everyone when he moved Kendrick Ellis to himself. While I'm not sure Ellis could play DT in this league, he'd be one large defensive end. |
1.08 | | RT Tyron Smith | The Redskins need to add another offensive tackle to their team, especially if Levi Brown is matched by Tennessee (doubtful, imo). Tyron Smith is likely the best option and the direction GM Bill Ryan would go. |
1.09 | | LT Anthony Castonzo | The first of back-to-back picks, the Broncos snatch up the other top tackle in this class -- Anthony Castonzo. He probably prefers Smith, but Castonzo has the same upside and potential. No reason to complain. |
1.10 | | MLB Chris White | One thing that GM Tom Collins really likes is an athletic middle linebacker. While nabbing Tyron Smith and Anthony Castonzo both would be nice, that's not an option here, so he likely grabs a new franchise MLB. |
1.11 | | CB Chimdi Chekwa | The Cardinals moved up a couple of spots for someone, but I'm unsure of who. I have to imagine they really like the fourth cornerback in this draft and look to add some additional talent and depth at the position. |
1.12 | | ROLB Mason Foster | It's a tough choice between Foster and Von Miller, but I think the Dolphins go for the player with higher strength despite the lack of a large name. Miami, just like in my last mock, focuses early on defense. |
1.13 | | DT Phil Taylor | There are rumors that the Dallas Cowboys are moving to a 3-4 defense solidified by Brian Urlacher and Angelo Crowell. If that's the case, they need a big guy in the middle -- someone like Phil Taylor. Great value fit. |
1.14 | | RE Robert Quinn | I'm not making a lot of changes from my last mock draft, so the Dolphins once again end up with Sherman, Foster and Quinn as their first three picks. We do know the next pick will change, as Chekwa is off the board. |
1.15 | | CB Jimmy Smith | The Dolphins do select the same position as Chekwa, however, and go with Jimmy Smith. He's a tall cornerback that should normally be higher in the class, but falls due to talent elsewhere. Not a bad selection. |
1.16 | | LG John Moffitt | Jimmy Smith likely would have been attractive here, but I still think Moffitt is the fit. After seeing the offensive linemen signed in free agency by GM Apolo Shapiro, I'm confident he's looking for someone like Moffitt. |
1.17 | | CB Patrick Peterson | A couple years ago we saw an early run on cornerbacks. I think we may see one this year. It's not shown crazily in this mock, but Peterson going at 1.17 is way higher than he should go. |
1.18 | | CB Johnny Patrick | And the run continues. Patrick isn't overly impressive, but he's a position of need in Tennessee for depth. Cornerbacks are flying off the board and The Titans need to get in before they have no one. |
1.19 | | FS Robert Sands | I know that GM Brad Barber said he wouldn't draft Sands, but we here in Dallas refer to him as "BS Barber." So basically, I wouldn't believe a single thing that man says -- the Eagles are drafting Sands. |
1.20 | | RT Ben Ijalana | I think the Bears are trying to move up for either Anthony Castonzo or Tyron Smith. I expect one more trade up by GM Brent Lachapelle. However, if they're stuck here, it's about the range I expect Ijalana to fall in. |
1.21 | | DT Nick Fairley | The Texans are rebuilding and GM Wade Pearce is going to be looking for solid roleplayers that can be life-long Texans. I feel like Fairley fits that mold in addition to filling a hole on the roster. |
1.22 | | WR Kris Durham | Every year there is a position where talent drops as a whole. I think wide receiver is going to be one of those positions this year. The Giants snatch up Durham for some solid depth and never look back. |
1.23 | | WR Vincent Brown | However...whenever there is a position that falls, we start to see a run. Vincent Brown is a great wide receiver. The Raiders just lost Chad Johnson to Cincinnati. Their window is closing. Brown makes a lot of sense. |
1.24 | | DT Stephen Paea | It's interesting -- New Orleans currently has zero defensive tackles on their roster. They may match Kareem Brown, but they prefer to play the 4-3 scheme. Drafting someone like Paea may be a neccesity. |
1.25 | | RT Derek Sherrod | The Patriots need to protect their franchise quarterback as long as he is around. When Brady is healthy, this squad is a playoff team. When he's on the IR, they draft Top 10. Sherrod is the best selection. |
1.26 | | MLB Akeem Dent | This is a no-brainer selection for GM Norbert Huszti. In fact, he may try to move up in the draft for a MLB. Getting Dent at 1.26 would be a dream scenario however and something that will anger the three other GMs in the AFC North. |
1.27 | | HB Mikel LeShoure | Not many changes in this mock draft -- I think the Dolphins once again shore up their halfback position by selecting LeShoure who should be available to start immediately for them. He's solid value. |
1.28 | | C Tim Barnes | I was right -- the Chargers do like Tim Barnes, hence their trade down. This is more the range where they should be selecting him. They may trade down again, but at least at 1.28 he's no longer considered a reach. |
1.29 | | RT Nate Solder | The Cardinals traded away Phil Loadholt, so they do need to replace his youth one way or another. Their third first round pick of this draft will likely be directed toward the offensive line and Solder is the best left. |
1.30 | | ROLB Von Miller | I thought I was crazy the first time, but the outside linebacker position isn't in high need this offseason. The Browns may actually get lucky and land someone like Von Miller this late in the first round. |
1.31 | | LOLB Aldon Smith | Von Miller's selection is untimely however as he was the Titans target with this pick. Instead, they settle for Aldon Smith who looks like he could be very good (and has one of the best AWR in the draft class). |
1.32 | | DT Marcel Dareus | This could be the spot where we finally see Andy Dalton selected, but GM Darryl Breckheimer is very vocal in his distaste of young quarterbacks. Dareus fits a need and the defensive tackles are off the board faster than expected. He takes Dareus and hopes Dalton drops to him in the next round. |
