Best Player Per Spot - Historical Draft Analysis
By Apolo Shapiro
Special to sfl-football.com

Happy 2022 SFL! On this article i’ll try to pick the player i consider the best one for each draft spot in last 9 drafts. This exercise is a bit different to a Mock and have nothing to do with 2011 draft, but i think can be fun and maybe a bit useful to compare the talent gap between each draft pick at 1st round. Initially my idea included more details on each player… But it would’ve taken a ton of time to write and would’ve been bored to read. Hope you all have fun Reading it and LETS GO TITANS!

1.1 Pick:
List of Players: QB Carson Palmer – QB Philip Rivers – CB Brandon Browner – WR Brandon Marshall – OT Joe Thomas – WR Jordy Nelson – CB Sean Smith – WE Dez Bryant -
My Pick: QB Carson Palmer – 2003 Draft – Arizona Cardinals
Comment: Is a no brainer to mention all the players on this group are absolute studs, the best of the best. But is interesting during the 2 first season it was a priority to get a QB the most ready posible. With the time and with progression i doubt we ever see another QB going that high unless is a very Young one with extremely high awr. The rest of players are physical studs, very fast and very tal. The reason for pick Palmer are his 2 SB titles, he have stablish as a franchise QB of the sfl and while the other players have put some good numbers, still they have not prove themselves as game changers.

1.2 Pick:
List of Players: QB Byron Leftwich - QB Ben Roethlisbergr - WR Matt Jones - RT DBrickashaw Ferguson - WR Calvin Johnson - WR James Hardy - MLB James Laurinaitis - CB Jerome Murphy
My Pick: WR Calvin Johnson
Comment: I gotta be honest here, i think 1.2 was the group of bust, but recent drafts have changed that. Specially the 3 first drafts are really weak for the spot. Leftwich- Big Ben – Matt Jones all have undeperform. My Pick is Megatron because he has everything for dominate the league, his stats have suffered because Dolphins decided to go in a rebuild, meaning a raw QB. But that rebuild is equal to Dolphins being on the driver seat for win a Lombardi within 3 years. Jerome Murphy won DROY and could be considered for the spot but i think he won’t be as succesful for being the chosen one.

1.3 Pick:
List of Players: WR Andre Johnson - RT Tyson Clabo - MLB Alfred Fincher - WR Cory – Rodgers - QB Brady Quinn - HB Jonathan Stewart - LE Terrance Knighton - LT Russell Okung
My Pick: Brady Quinn
Comment: 3 words: WHAT A GROUP! Completely different to 1.2, 1.3 have been great picks after great picks. Is really hard to chose from here, Andre Johnson have dominated the league, Fincher have 2 SB, Stewart destroyed the league 2 seasons ago and Knighton is a forcé of nature, but im picking the only rookie QB to ever reach the SB, he’s still young and very Smart for his age. If Chargers manage to give him some talent for work around, Quinn have everything for bring a Lombardi to San Diego.

1.4 Pick:
List of Players: QB Rex Grossman - WR Drew Carter - WR Braylon Edwards - LOLB A.J. Hawk - WR Dwayne Jarrett - LE Chris Long - WR Michael Crabtree - WR Taylor Price
My Pick: AJ Hawk
Comment: Im not so hyped about this group, as i feel the group have under-perform a bit, the talent is there specially at recent drafts, but they need to prove themselves. So my pick for this spot is AJ Hawk, a player i think have become a core piece on a defense that have play multiple playoffs recently. Hawk is a very constant player, and sometimes being constant is the best thing you can find in a player. Maybe AJ Hawk maybe won’t be a leader in stats but he’s a solid player every season. And that’s extremely valuable. The player with the highest roof is without doubts LE Chris Long, i think if he start to produce as his attributes indicates should. He’ll be the best 1.4

1.5 Pick:
List of Players: LT Brett Williams - QB Eli Manning - RT Wes Sims - CB Marcus Maxey - CB Corey Graham - CB Aqib Talib - CB Derek Cox - WR Brandon LaFell
My Pick: QB Eli Manning
Comment: Im going with my guy here, and yeah maybe im biased but im taking him given his MVP Season. Im not so hyped about 1.5 group. Some OL and CB that are extremely athletic and that in theory could and should being lockdowns but that at least at this point have not provided that to their respective teams. I see ton of potential but that have not provide the desired results.

1.6 Pick:
List of Players: WR Tyrone Calico - LOLB Teddy Lehman - LOLB Shawne Merriman - QB Matt Leinart - FS Sabby Piscitelli - TE Gary Barnidge - CB Kevin Barnes - LOLB Keenan Clayton
My Pick: TE Gary Barnidge
Comment: What a peculiar chose, here we have one of the biggest bust at Matt Leinart, a bust that received a max contract and saved his career at Tyrone Calico. And all time leader for Lions in Lehman. And in attributes the best safety this league have ever seen. Im going to feel awful about not taking my ex - guy Sabby here. He could very well being the winner here, but im taking Gary Barnidge because i loved his rookie season, he dominated and is the closer player to Gonzalez. He can boost any offense and change a game by himself

1.7 Pick:
List of Players: CB Marcus Trufant - CB Chris Gamble - FS O.J. Atogwe - RT Quinn Ojinnaka - CB Aaron Ross - QB Erik Ainge - TE Jared Cook - HB Ryan Mathews
My Pick: Aaron Ross
Comment: We still on the top 10, and wis still common to find athelte freaks. I think Atogwe have solid arguments here, but he ahve played in a team that have suffered recently, Jared Cook and Ryan Mathews could be offensive leaders very soon, but i’ll pick Aaron Ross here. I just love how well he have played, how Smart he is and that is an excellent athlete is probably the most build around CB of the league. I’ll say it simple: On my eyes, he’s the most valuable CB of the league. 25 years old and 94 awr, with 94 spd and he have played well all of his 4 seasons.

1.8 Pick:
List of Players: MLB E.J. Henderson - LOLB Karlos Dansby - MLB Jordan Beck - MLB Leon Williams - WR Robert Meachem - SS Domonique Barber - QB Mark Sanchez - LE Carlos Dunlap
My Pick: WR Robert Meachem
Comment: Not a surprise here, i have promoted Robert Meachem for a long time, he was my first ever draft pick here, and i loved him in Arizona, he constantly appeared with long TD. The group have multiple talented players including another one of my guys as Barber. Jordan Beck is a complete beast in the middle of the field, and Karlos Dansby have dominated with Bears. All of them could win this 1.8, but as im the one writting it. Meachem gets it

1.9 Pick:
List of Players: CB Charles Tillman - CB Joey Thomas - CB Antrel Rolle - WR Maurice Stovall - RT James Marten - LG Carl Nicks - CB Vontae Davis - WR Emmanuel Sanders
My Pick: OT James Marten
Comment: I like multiple players here, Rolle is probably my favorite player among the group, charles “peanut” tillman is another excellent choose for the spot. But i’ll the take the man thaw was shadowed by Thomas during draft but that have been an anchor for Steelers, and probably the reason Tim Miller is still the GM. He maybe lost the “special” factor with all those Athletic OL, and with early regression. But those factors i won’t consider him, andhe’s the best 1.9 imo.

1.10 Pick:
List of Players: WR David Tyree - WR Roy Williams - MLB Odell Thurman - CB Tye Hill - LE Jay Moore - DT Frank Okam - CB Keenan Lewis - QB Sam Bradford
My Pick: MLB Odell Thurman
Comment: The key player of the most recent SB Champions, odell thurman is a freak and a complete shutdown MLB for Rams. I see some underperform players, im not really in love with 1.10 group, i do consider Sam Bradford displayed some magic on the few time he was on the field with Lions so should keep an eye at him. But for me it was a simple choose with Thurman here.

1.11 Pick:
List of Players: CB Nnamdi Asomugha - CB Nathan Jones - LT Marcus Johnson - RT Ryan OCallaghan - HB Marshawn Lynch - HB Matt Forte - CB Sherrod Martin - MLB Pat Angerer
My Pick: HB Marshawn Lynch
Comment: 2 Tremendous CB at Asomugha and Jones, imagine how Good is Nmandi that he was paid a max contract and a 1st with 30 years old, Nathan Jones played very well for Bengals and then boosted Browns to playoffs. Pat angerer have ton of potential in the future, but im picking an HB on this spot, and there were 2 incredible options 1 at Lynch and the other at Forte. I consider Forte landed in the most ideal spot, Garth loves to run the ball and he knows how to do it, but for me i consider Lynch a Little bit more special, so 1.11 goes to him.

1.12 Pick:
List of Players: MLB Angelo Crowell - MLB Jonathan Vilma - WR Vincent Jackson - ROLB Thomas Howard - LE Lamar Woodley - DT Red Bryant - RT Phil Loadholt - WR Victor Cruz
My Pick: Victor Cruz
Comment: So im going with the youngest one here, meaning i’ll pick Projection over production here, and the reason is i really liked the rookie season of Cruz, and even with some really strong options as Angelo, Vilma and Woodley. I do think Victor Cruz is going to become a dominant receiver for Browns. And one of the league receiver leaders

1.13 Pick:
List of Players: WR Jon Olinger - RG Shawn Andrews - CB Corey Webster - CB Tramon Williams - LE Gaines Adams - LG Chilo Rachal - CB Bradley Fletcher - TE Rob Gronkowski
My Pick: CB Corey Webster
Comment: Oh boy i really wanted to pick Gronk Fiesta here, honesty i consider he could be the best option for the spot. And given how i picked Cruz for 1.12, is a display of how goos was Tom Collins draft at 2010. I see some bust here, or at least players that some expected to do better and felt shor in expectactions. At this point of the article 1.13 seems as weak spot, but the guy i picked have been a key player for Bears and one of the reason of why the bears have been a playoffs team in recent seasons.

1.14 Pick:
List of Players: RE Osi Umenyiora - HB Steven Jackson - QB Kyle Orton - FS Roman Harper - WR Laurent Robinson - QB Brian Brohm - LE David Veikune - TE Jermaine Gresham
My Pick: Steven Jackson
Comment: One of the biggest mistakes i made in Arizona was to trade Sjax, and don’t get me wrong i got some Good value back. But i never really could replace him. I feel like 1.14 have been a magic spot, for example comparing to 1.13 i do consider is way better. I don’t see a single bust here, maybe is because expectations are lower as draft advance. For future i believe Brohm (If can’t stay healthy), have everything to become the best 1.14, but at least for now. Steven Jackson is a no brainer here.

1.15 Pick:
List of Players: DT Ty Warren - HB Cedric Cobbs - LT Todd Herremans - RG Marcus McNeill - LT Clint Oldenburg - RT Gosder Cherilus - ROLB Clint Sintim - CB Akasi Owusu-Ansah
My Pick: Clint Sintim
Comment: I see some Good starters, but not really an elite player in attributes or production, and don’t get me wrong, players as Warren and Cobbs have been really good. But for the spot i can’t pick other than Clint Sintim. If i needed to write an article about draft steals, Clint Sintim is a must, GM William Cook managed to walk away with an Elite top 5 value player at 1.15, meaning in relation Quality/Spot Clint Sintim have some of the best relations.

1.16 Pick:
List of Players: MLB Nick Barnett - QB Matt Schaub - RT Pete McMahon - SS Pat Watkins - HB Tony Hunt - LE Derrick Harvey - LG Andy Levitre - CB Joe Haden
My Pick: Joe Haden
Comment: Weird group, specially with an unique player as Watkins, a player as Schaub that almost ruin Mendez career in NYG but that just made playoffs with Browns. Andy Levitre at the momento of the draft seemed as steal, but with how position have developed i don’t thik he’s the best 1.16, Tony Hunt seems a bit lost in a team that living a rebuild. So my Pick Joe Haden is really young, fast and Smart. He’s not in the radar of those that look pure speed or size, but he’s the kind of player that seems to work here and he’s future is extremely bright.

1.17 Pick:
List of Players: RT Kwame Harris - TE Benjamin Watson - SS Ben Emanuel - WR Todd Watkins - SS LaRon Landry - LG Roy Schuening - RT Troy Kropog - FS Nate Allen
My Pick: Nate Allen
Comment: Another young player that i pick based on projection, at this point i gotta mark, maybe my picks are a bit influence by the fact i have only been here for 4 drafts, but also do consider the players have become better as draft classes advance. That’s the case of Nate Allen, i don’t think a player with his attributes would’ve been taken outside top 5 at first drafts, but yet he felt to 1.17 just last season. He’s a freak of nature with a long career ahead.

1.18 Pick:
List of Players: ROLB Alonzo Jackson - RG Robert Gallery - WR Mike Williams - ROLB Chris Gocong - HB Adrian Peterson - WR Andre Caldwell - ROLB Clay Matthews - FS Eric Berry
My Pick: HB Adrian Peterson
Comment: With exactly the same argument used at 1.17 spot, i could pick Berry here and just move on. He’s fantastic and going to shine for Vikings, Alonzo Jackson and Gocong have been solid LB but not game changers. Andre Caldwell have dominate with Vikings. And yeah while im writting it i realized 2 things: First one is OMG if im neal i trade for 1.18 every draft, he found 2 gems at this spot, and the 2nd one is yeah im screwing him with not picking any of those 2. I have a thing for AP, yeah i admit it. I love AP and he’s my selection for 1.18

1.19 Pick:
List of Players: RG Courtney Van Buren - DT Vince Wilfork - CB Pacman Jones - LE Darryl Tapp - LOLB Zak DeOssie - MLB Phillip Wheeler - RT Michael Oher - LT Vladimir Ducasse
My Pick: Darryl Tapp
Comment: I really like the relation quality/spot of most of this guys. Some very solid players as DeOssie, Ducasse, Pacman, etc. Including Phillip Wheeler 85 speed MLB avaliable for a 1st. This is not an sponsor and im not using league articles for make trades. JK anyway my selection here is Darryll Tapp. GM Brady Tinnin have an special talent for draft defensive players, and Tapp is not an exception, the main reason im picking hi mis because he dominated as RE, i think whole league struggle to get production from RE spot, and if someone say it’s easy… It’s Lying. But Tapp was a really productive RE, so is my pick for 1.19

1.20 Pick:
List of Players: QB Tony Romo - CB DeAngelo Hall - CB Mike Hawkins - DT Haloti Ngata - RT Tony Ugoh - SS Craig Steltz - TE Chase Coffman - LOLB Rennie Curran
My Pick: CB Deangelo Hall
Comment: This spot have another massive bust with Tony Romo, the Bears raise the hand with 2 very solid players as Ngata and Ugoh ( He wanted top lay for us). And some players with a potentially good futures as Steltz and Coffman. Mike Hawkins is a physical stud than have progressed very well, but Deangelo hall is the evidence brain beats body. He’s been a key player for saints, won a SB with them, and is a superstar of the SFL

1.21 Pick:
List of Players: FS Mike Doss - C Nick Hardwick - FS Brodney Pool - MLB Stephen Tulloch - LE Adam Carriker - QB Matt Ryan - LE Larry English - RT Jared Veldheer
My Pick: Matt Ryan
Comment: I see some very decent players on this group but no one that really makes me pull the trigger for select him, so i’ll take a future gamble and select Matt Ryan, he’s clearly the present and future in GB. He’s very accurate and need work at AWR. Brodney Pool and Always injury Doss, are 2 very solid safety, Stephen Tulloch is a key MLB for saints and Adam Carriker was my most valuable Project that ended being that, a Project. Veldheer has good projection but let’s see how he does in future.

1.22 Pick:
List of Players: WR Anquan Boldin - HB Michael Turner - CB Carlos Rogers - LE Mario Williams - CB David Irons - LE Calais Campbell - WR Percy Harvin - SS Kam Chancellor
My Pick: Michael Turner
Comment: Incredible players here, i really like most of them. Is more incredible when you realice we’re reaching the late 1st and let’s be honest, most of this guys have been productive players in the SFL. Anquan Boldin have been a dominant WR, Carlos Rogers have seen his ups and downs but overall a solid player. David Irons looks like can have some sucessful years in Washington. But Michael Turner have been the key player in the offense for Jets and he was a fundamental player for the SB they won. Turner is a beats when you see him play, he breaks tackles and attack the open field.

1.23 Pick:
List of Players: CB Andre Woolfolk - CB Dunta Robinson - CB Stanford Routt - RG Davin Joseph - ROLB Paul Posluszny - FS Caleb Campbell - WR Ramses Barden - WR Marc Mariani
My Pick: Paul Posluszny
Comment: Another recent champ player here, and another LB. With this article we can notice how good is Rams LB core, and Posluszny is still a young player that is only going to become better. Dunta Robinson was an steal for Bengals that as was mentioned Brady knows how to draft defense, at this spot we can see the only Bryan first round pick at Ramser Barden, not a favorite on my book, but decent player. Stanford Routt offers a fantastic relation value, so does Caleb Campbell.

1.24 Pick:
List of Players: RT Jordan Gross - MLB Courtney Watson - LE Marcus Spears - CB Jimmy Williams - WR Jacoby Jones - HB Clifton Smith - C Alex Mack - FS Earl Thomas
My Pick: CB Jimmy Williams
Comment: I selected Williams for 1 play, not sure if still at Will’s Twitch, but during SB vs Vikings, “Madden” was about to give Vikings win with a long TD. Jimmy Williams run with all his soul and stopped the TD at the 1 yard line. HERO. If that doesn’t win you this spot i have no idea what Will. Anyway some good talent for the spot, but i notice none of then have been really consistent.

1.25 Pick:
List of Players: HB Musa Smith - QB B.J. Symons - FS Kurt Campbell - MLB DQwell Jackson - LG Kasey Studdard - LOLB Shawn Crable - MLB Jason Phillips - WR Dezmon Briscoe
My Pick: HB Musa Smith
Comment: I could leave this space in blank and no one needs an explain for this, HB Musa Smith is probably the best quality/spot relation pick ever. Musa Smith is an SFL Legend, and nothing going to change that. Travis hit a home-run with this pick. The rest of talent on this group is decent, but no one close to Musa. If we ever have a HOF on the league, Musa is a first ballot

1.26 Pick:
List of Players: FS Bryan Scott - MLB Landon Johnson - RT Jammal Brown - WR Miles Austin - LOLB Jon Beason - WR Malcolm Kelly - SS Patrick Chung - LOLB Navorro Bowman
My Pick: LOLB Jon Beason
Comment: I really wanted Jon Beason when joined the league, i wasn’t scare of his size, but the + - bold skew glitch on site scared me. Anyway Beason currently have 90 speed, thanks to the Bryan AP investment, he was part of a massive trade last offseason, and i think Buccaneers going to be a menace next year. This group have very solid players, specially considering the spot.

1.27 Pick:
List of Players: CB Drayton Florence - WR Clarence Moore - FB John Kuhn - CB Antonio Cromartie - ROLB Anthony Waters - HB Ryan Torain - LE Robert Ayers - WR Eric Decker
My Pick: CB Dranton Florence
Comment: Recently traded, Drayton always were a key player on Rock’s defense. He’s a very complete CB with speed and football skills. On this group we have a big bust as Ryan Torain, a very peculiar player as FB John Khun. The another player was considering for the spot was Antonio Cromartie but i don’t feel he have played up to the expectatives.

1.28 Pick:
List of Players: C Jeff Faine - RT Bo Lacy -- RG Rob Petitti - LG Max Jean-Gilles - C Dustin Fry - MLB Dan Connor - DT B. J. Raji - CB Kareem Jackson
My Pick: OG Rob Peetitti
Comment: 1.28 seems to be an spot for draft C, originally i wrote MLB Dan Connor, but then read Rob petitti and changed my pick. Vikings OL have been one of the best OL in SFL history. And he’s still 29 years old so have some years on the tank. Connor as wrote, is very solid he have dominated MLB position since day 1 in Cleveland, but Petitti deserves the spot.

1.29 Pick:
List of Players: RE Terrell Suggs - ROLB Demorrio Williams - CB Justin Miller - TE Vernon Davis - LOLB Brian Smith - QB John David Booty - RG Xavier Fulton - TE Jimmy Graham
My Pick: LOLB Brian Smith
Comment: Eagles linebacker is an stud 6”4 frame 85 speed and 80+ at everything. For this late in 1st round, he’s amazing good. Other considerations are Colts CB Justin Miller, and more in a future projection TE Jimmy Graham with his big body frame and speed, Xavier Fulton if can win some AWR and new Chiefs QB David Booty

1.30 Pick:
List of Players: MLB Terry Pierce - RG Jason Peters - QB Alex Smith - DT Brodrick Bunkley - FS Aaron Rouse - WR Josh Morgan - RG Andre Smith - WR Demaryius Thomas
My Pick: MLB Terry Pierce
Comment: I saw Pierce playing during 3 seasons, and loved him. He won 2 SB with Redskins, and have an incredible ammount of TFL on his career. On this spot i also like FS Aaron Rouse, jets safety is tal and fast. Recently traded for 1.13 we have Demaryius Thomas. Some good grabs for a very late 1st range

1.31 Pick:
List of Players: WR Bobby Wade - WR Johnnie Morant - HB Ronnie Brown - CB Johnathan Joseph - ROLB Johnny Baldwin - HB Darren McFadden - MLB Tyrone McKenzie - C Morgan Cox
My Pick: Jonathan Joseph
Comment: We’re reaching a point when talent start to drop, at least considered with the top picks, but we still find decent talent. HB Darren McFadden was a consideration here, but i think his career still short and he needs to prove himself in next years. Raiders OLB Johnny Baldwin that recently hit FA and cameback with them is another option, given his 4 years of solid football. But finally went for patriots CB Jonathan Joseph as my pick.

1.32 Pick:
List of Players: LOLB Boss Bailey - RG Brian Rimpf - LE Dan Cody - LE Jesse Mahelona - RE Tim Crowder - RG Jake Long - CB Donald Washington - CB Walter Thurmond
My Pick: Jesse Mahelona
Comment: This one was a fast selection, i love what Mahelona have done last seasons, and i think Kevin hit a home-run here. He managed to make a role player to work as an stud. Im curious if Mahelona going to keep his level or if going to start a decline, whatever happens he proves to be the best 1.32 till now. Brian Rimpf, Boss Bailey and Tim Crowder were another big considerations for the spot.

Please share your own comments, and say if you think a different player deserves the spot. Also, should i do this for the other 6 rounds? Goodnight
