2011 SFL Draft Value Picks- AFC

Bills

3.12- ROLB-K.J. Wright- 22 years old, 6’4”, 250 lbs., 84 SPD, 70 STR, 58 AWR, 83 AGI, 81 ACC, and 75 TAK

I feel like there was a sweet spot for OLB’s in the middle rounds of this draft. The Bills selecting K.J. Wright at 3.12 is an example of this. He has good size and his physical attributes were better than initially advertised.

Dolphins

1.12- TE-Larry Donnell- 22 years old, 6’6”, 265 lbs., 86 SPD, 79 STR, 51 AWR, 87 AGI, 88 ACC, and 68 CTH

I don’t have many first round picks in this article because it’s hard to get greater than expected value in round 1. However, I think the Dolphins did this twice. First, they did it with Larry Donnell who is a Gary Barnidge type of TE. A guy who is worth a top 10 pick and yet he slid to 1.12. This is due in large part to the fact that his skew was better than his pre-draft evaluation.

1.14- LT-Anthony Castonzo- 23 years old, 6’7”, 295 lbs., 69 SPD, 98 STR, 56 AWR, 76 AGI, 82 ACC, 86 PBK, and 88 RBK

Castonzo is the second value pick by the Dolphins in round 1. Castonzo’s pre-draft evaluation was excellent and I still do not understand why he did not go higher. The loss of several teams in the top 13 is the clear gain of the Dolphins.

Patriots

2.25- CB-Johnny Patrick- 22 years old, 6’0”, 186 lbs., 92 SPD, 55 STR, 60 AWR, 89 AGI, 91 ACC, 65 CTH, and 61 TAK

Patrick is a sneaky good pick late in the second round. In my mind he is comparable to Chris Culliver taken a round early though he lack the physical attributes. He is however more polished and ready to go.

Jets

1.18- SS-Austin Yancey- 22 years old, 6’3”, 230 lbs., 93 SPD, 61 STR, 51 AWR, 96 AGI, 95 ACC, 56 CTH, and 64 TAK

The only other first round value pick in this article is Austin Yancey of the Jets. He looks to me like Sabby Piscitelli except at SS. He is both big and tall and extremely athletic. He’s a clear upgrade to what the Jets have been running out there and he could easily be the best SS in the league in a couple of seasons.

Bengals

3.27- MLB-Quin Sturdivant- 22 yeros old, 6’2”, 235 lbs., 83 SPD, 66 STR, 66 AWR, 82 AGI, 82 ACC, and 81 TAK

Bengals management feels confident about Martez Wilson, the first MLB they selected in this draft. However, I think the standout value is in Quin Sturdivant, the second MLB they selected in the draft. He’s a solid overall MLB in his major attributes, but he is also underrated with his CTH and JMP too. I love the value here late in round 3.

Browns

2.22-HB-Roy Helu- 22 years old, 6’0”, 215 lbs., 89 SPD, 85 STR, 55 AWR, 86 AGI, 91 ACC, 67 CAR, and 68 BTK

Helu is a guy who could be a great RB in this league if the Browns choose to invest in him. I am surprised he went late in round 2 and I had my eye on him early in round 3. But I don’t the value is poor I just felt like teams wouldn’t value him because of his carry and break tackle. His physical attributes, particularly his strength, are really good.

Colts

3.31- HB-Mark Ingram- 22 years old, 5’10”, 215 lbs., 90 SPD, 70 STR, 56 AWR, 92 AGI, 91 ACC, 63 CAR, and 85 BTK

The Colts struck gold with their late 2rd round selection of Mark Ingram. His post-draft evaluation is significantly better than his pre-draft one. The Colts management are even considering starting him and I think that discussion is merited. Great work by the Colts here.

4.6- LOLB-Doug Hogue- 22 years old, 6’2”, 226 lbs., 84 SPD, 74 STR, 58 AWR, 83 AGI, 85 ACC, and 75 TAK

I said earlier that I think there was a sweet spot for OLB’s in the middle rounds of this draft and the Colts found it with Doug Hogue. He’s got starter and maybe even Pro-Bowl caliber attributes and to get him early in the fourth screams value.

Jaguars

3.5- CB-DeMarcus VanDyke- 24 years old, 95 SPD, 39 STR, 53 AWR, 95 AGI, 93 ACC, 54 CTH, and 50 TAK

I know why VanDyke fell like he did in this draft. He’s 24 years old and has low AWR. The concern for GM’s is simply that he will start regressing before he is in his prime. And I think that concern is valid and likely true. But at some point the value of the player has to take over and at the beginning of the 3rd round I think the Jags did quite well. He is still a 6,1”, 95 SPD CB and there aren’t a ton of those.

Titans

5.1- HB-Alex Green- 22 years old, 6’1”, 217 lbs., 94 SPD, 79 STR, 63 AWR, 91 AGI, 92 ACC, 76 CAR, and 72 BTK

I totally recognize that this pick was totally transformed by the Diamond in the Rough feature. However, I can’t ignore the fact that a 95 SPD, 80 STR, and 95 ACC after two years progression was drafted at the beginning of the 5th round. Apolo has capitalized well on his activity points with Green.

Broncos

4.5- WR-Austin Pettis- 24 years old, 6’3”, 201 lbs., 93 SPD, 43 STR, 55 AWR, 91 AGI, 96 ACC, and 70 CTH

Pettis looks better post-draft than he did pre-draft and that’s great new for the Broncos. Sure he is raw prospect but he will be a 6’3”, 95 SPD receiver and for the 4th round that’s a great pick.

4.12- ROLB-Dontay Moch- 23 years old, 6’1”, 245 lbs., 83 SPD, 77 STR, 57 AWR, 83 AGI, 83 ACC, and 73 TAK

I sound like a broken record but Moch is another guy drafted in that sweet spot for OLB’s in the middle of this draft. He will need to play early but if he doesn’t he can be a legit starter in this league. The Broncos found two good value players in the 4th round of this draft.

Chargers

5.20- C-Mike Pouncey- 23 years old, 6’5”, 298 lbs., 63 SPD, 91 STR, 50 AWR, 70 AGI, 72 ACC, 77 PBK, and 79 RBK

Pouncey will have his problems as a prospect but he’s not all the physical tools to be very good. And I think the major difference between he and the other guys at his position taken earlier in the draft is AWR, PBK, and RBK. I’m not saying those are small things but he can be a starter in this league and at 5.20 there’s great value there.
