Around the SFL Week 3
The Undefeateds
After three weeks of the season we have four undefeated teams. The Ravens, Bears, and Seahawks have all won their first three games, while the Jets have won their first two and had an early week 3 bye. The Ravens are already 3-0 in the division, beating each of their three division rivals. Outside of the games the Ravens, their opponents are 3-3. The Bears have an identical profile to the Ravens. Three division wins, one against each of their division rivals plus outside the games against the Bears their opponents are 3-3. The Jets have a common victory with the Ravens in beating the Bengals. The Seahawks have registered two wins against the NFC South and then a win against their division rival San Francisco. Their opponents, outside of the games against the Seahawks, are also 3-3. The Jets opponents are 2-2 excluding the games against the Jets and have yet to play a division game.
The Rise of Brian Brohm
Who knew that the QB star through three weeks of the season was going to be Brian Brohm of the Jaguars. Maybe Brad Barber thought this would happen, but how many other GM’s might have expected it? I don’t think many. But that’s where we are after three weeks. Alex Smith of the Seahawks has more yards but nobody can rival Brohm’s 123.6 QB rating or 11 TD’s. It helps to have Dez Bryant on your team but still Brohm is killing it in his own right. And he’s down it against three teams that on paper should have pretty decent defenses in the Bills, Broncos, and Titans.
The Curious Case of Tyson Jackson
A little while back the Chiefs drafted the attribute superstar LE-Chris Long with 4th overall pick in the 2008 draft. After two seasons in Kansas City, they traded him to the Atlanta Falcons. As a part of that deal the Chiefs received Tyson Jackson. Jackson had two decent season in 2010 and 2011 but now in 2012 he already has 7 sacks in 3 games. Is he cementing his status as an elite LE in this league or is this a bit of fool’s gold? I’m not 100% sure yet, but let me offer some context that may find us wanting to see a little more from him before we call him elite. The Chiefs first three opponents were the Broncos, Panthers, and Texans. Each of these three teams played rookie QB’s in part or all of their games against the Chiefs. Chandler Harnish was sacked four times by Jackson in game 1, Brock Osweiler was sacked by Jackson twice in game 3 and Russell Wilson played in game two and was sacked three times but I’m not sure if that was by Jackson or not. Suffice it to say that at least 6 of the 7 Jackson sacks to this point have been against rookie QB’s. It is certainly easier to sack a rookie QB than a 99 AWR QB. Now this doesn’t mean that Jackson isn’t elite. It just means that he has yet to prove that. He’ll get his opportunities coming up.
The Current Interception Leader Is…
If I were to ask you to guess (without looking) who is the current interception leader in the league, I suspect it would take you a while to get it right. But the reality is, Ras-I Dowling of the Jacksonville Jaguars leads the pack with 3 INT’s. Now he has all the attributes to be a successful CB. He has good size and speed and decent AWR and CTH. However, last season he only had 2 INT’s while allowing a whopping 49 catches against. In three games this season he already has more INT’s than he did in 16 games last season. Now the QB’s he has played against haven’t been great but he’s still been a standout this season.
Good luck to all teams in week 4!
