SFL Rulebook

2.03 - GM Contracts
General Managers in the SFL are held to high standards by their team owners in regards to providing a winning atmosphere for their respective franchise. For this reason, each GM in the SFL will be signed a contract with their team for 3 years upon joining the SFL.

Depending on the success of each GM's team, extensions can be added to the contract at the end of each season, based on improvements.

Improved record, at least 6 wins, but no playoffs: +1 year (Net 0 years, after season ends)
Record over .500, but no playoffs: (+1 year (Net 0 years, after season ends)
Playoff birth: +2 years (Net +1 year, after season ends)
Super Bowl appearance: +3 years (Net +2 years, after season ends)

Note: A GM can never have a contract longer than 5 years.

When a general manager's contract is reduced to 0 years, he is relieved of duty from his current team and becomes a free agent GM in the SFL. This does not mean the GM will cease to participate in the league. One of the following will happen, based on number of free agent GMs at the beginning of each offseason.

If there are 2+ free agent GMs: All GMs with current contracts with be given a minimum of 24 hours to volunteer to take over an available team. In order to be eligible, a GM must have at least 2 years left on their GM contract, and a first, second, and third round pick in the upcoming SFL draft (or a better selection of picks). GMs must also carry two years with their current team, have made the playoffs with their team in their first year there, or have joined the league during the previous season. If multiple GMs volunteer for the same team, the GM that progressed farthest in the postseason will be signed by the team in question. If multiple GMs whom did not make the playoffs volunteer for the same team, normal playoff tiebreaking procedures will determine the new GM. GMs will rotate to new teams until all positions are filled. All GMs starting with new teams will be awarded a fresh 3-year contract (even if their previous contract was longer).

If there is only 1 free agent GM: The same procedure as above applies. However, if no one volunteers for the newly open team, the previous GM is awarded with a 1 year extension.
