Offseason Recap for the Bang Bang Niner Gang |
Introduction: The San Francisco 49ers have undergone significant roster changes during the offseason of 2024, under the stewardship of General Manager Gary Hickman and Head Coach Mike Nolan.
Key Departures:
1. Amralo Herrara (MLB): Was released as the team picked up DJ Alexander
2. Eli Harold (LE): Released by the team.
3. Jacoby Glenn (CB): Contract talks terminated due to excessive demands.
4. Bruce Campbell (RT): Released due to mental game inconsistencies.

5. Kevin Pierre-Louis (ROLB): Super happy to get an amazing Starter for more than a fair price. Signed to a 5-year, $15 million contract.
6. Ulrick John (RG): Studly player to help revamp an aging Oline. Signed to a 5-year, $37.5 million contract.
7. Ed Stinson (RE): Signed to a 5-year, $18 million contract.
8. Garrett Scott (RT): See John. Signed to a 5-year, $30 million deal.
9. Cameron Fleming (LT): See Scott. Signed to a 5-year, $25 million contract.
10. Devonta Freeman (HB): Some Thunder to go with CMC's lightning. Signed to a 5-year, $20 million contract.
11. Aaron Donald (DT): Our main target in UFA, glad to keep him away from our division rivals. Signed to a 5-year, $50 million contract.
12. Tyrann Mathieu (CB): Resigned to the team on a 3 year deal for $10.9 million.
13. Telvin Smith (OLB): Young blood hungry for a shot at the big time.
14. Russell Bodine (C): Another potential practice squad who made an impressive showing in Camp.
15. Paul Richardson (WR): another solid young receiver to add to the team’s embarrassingly rich depth at the position.
16. Johnny Patrick (CB): Another veteran to add very solid depth to the secondary.
Key Trades:
1. Cameron Erving (C): Acquired from the Cowboys for a 7th round pick to be the backup center.
2. Jay Moore (LE): traded to the Dolphins for a 6th round pick..
3. Lavonte David (ROLB): Acquired from the Cowboys for a 4th round pick. Had a bad training camp and was released before preseason.
4. Christian McCaffrey (HB): Acquired from the Packers with a 5th for a 1st & 3rd round pick.
5. D.J. Alexander (MLB): Acquired from the Vikings to be the starting inside linebacker.
6. Stefon Diggs (WR): traded to Washington for a 1st round pick and a future 2nd round pick.
7. Giovani Bernard (HB): Acquired from the Giants for a 5th round pick, to be the teams kick returner and veteran depth behind McCaffrey and Freeman.
8. 3rd round picks: we traded ours and the Washington 2nd round picks from 2019 to acquire 4 3rd round picks. We felt we grabbed some great depth players, and potential starters.
9. Sean Mannion (QB): the team was able to trade the young talent with the drafting of Josh Allen in the 1st round.
Contract Restructurings:
1. Landon Collins (SS): Signed a new 7-year deal with a salary of $21 million and an $8.4 million bonus. He is a key piece as the quarterback of the defense and will retire a Niner.
Draft Selections:
1.13 Josh Allen (QB) Wyoming: Drafted as the heir apparent to Kyle Orton. He has been impressive in training camp.
3.11 Jordan Akins (TE) UCF: Drafted to be backup for Coby Fleener. Will see some starting work when Fleener lineups outside.
3.18 David Williams (HB) Arkansas: most likely a career backup. Is a very solid big brusing back.
3.30 Kendrick Norton (DT) Miami: Very gifted athletically, very ungifted academically. Has great upside and could very well have a starting position in the future with the help of Aaron Donald and Domonique Easley.
3.31 Calvin Ridley (WR) Alabama: Very gifted receiver, very heads up. Great set of hands but not the fastest guy on the field. Could easily see some WR3 action in the future. |

49ers Golden Heroes - Week 5 |
The 49ers go into week five with a record of 3-1. A solid start, the 49ers host the Atlanta Falcons and look for their 4th win of the year. These two teams having history recently last year when the Atlanta Falcons knocked the 49ers out of the playoffs. We were able to get a little revenge today with a 50-17 victory against the Falcons. So far, today was Orton’s best game of the year, Stefon Diggs shows up in a big way, and our defense came away with 2 costly turnovers. Here are your heroes of the game.
QB Kyle Orton
A recent change in the gameplan benefits Orton the most. Orton finished with 446 yards, 4 touchdowns, a muscular 145.5 QBR and 62% completion rate today. Orton looked back to his groove mainly thanks to both WR Stefon Diggs, Will Fuller, and Ryan Grant. And Orton did a good job hanging on to the ball, he finished without a turnover on the game. It was a mixed game, our offensive line didn’t do a great job protecting our QB and was in and out on the game, but finished the game healthy and can fight another day.
WR Stefon Diggs
Diggs ruled the game today. Diggs finished with 7 receptions, 233 yards, and 2 TDs on the day. His longest went for a quick catch and run for 80 yard TD. Diggs really looked like himself today and we’re excited to see what our offense can look like when everyone is firing.
K Blair Walsh
Walsh has had some great games this year, but today he was lights out. 5/5 on FGs and 5/5 on XP. Walsh has been fantastic as always. He’s actually near perfect, missing a rare FG last week, but today he gets back on track making all of his kicks this week. When Orton was out and offense sputtered with Manion in, Walsh was able to continue the lead finishing drives with a FG.
MLB Daryl Sharpton
Sharpton led the team this week with 10 tackles, 3 deflections and 1 INT on the day. Sharpton has stepped up this year. It’s nice to see as this might be his final year with the team as his contract nears an end. No one knows what next season brings, but for today, Sharpton is setting up for a great season.
CB Cortez Allen
Allen with another big stat line for the day. Allen finished with 9 tackles and 4 deflections. Allen had a tough assignment against WR Kevin Norwood who finished with a good stat line, but Allen was able to slow down the Falcons enough to pick up the win today. After 5 weeks Allen is on pace for his highest deflections total in his career.
FS John Johnson
Nice to see depth players making moves. Johnson had limited snaps, but finished with 2 tackles and a QB sack on the day. John Johnson wont be getting starting time, but it’s encouraging to see our backups being able to make a play. Kudos.
DT Dominique Easley and Elijah Qualls
Another game from our big guys up front. Both Easley and Qualls finished the game with 1 tackle and 1 QB sack each. Again so nice to see our big guys get to the QB and disrupt offenses. Both compliment each other. Easley is already tied with his previous seasons with 3 QB sacks. He’s on pace for the best season of his career. And Qualls adds on another QB sack for the season and increases his total to 3. Both DTs are combining for 6 QB sacks after 5 weeks.

49ers Golden Heroes - Week 4 |
After taking a loss in week 3 the 49ers get another divisional matchup against the St. Louis Rams. The Rams had been on a strong start to the season, but thanks to the strong efforts of our defense and the combination of Kyle Orton and Ryan Grant the 49ers came up victorious in a 33-21 win. Ryan Grant continues his blossoming season. Here are the rest of your golden heroes this week.
QB Kyle Orton
Orton has a very nice game today, finishing with 405 yards, 3 touchdowns, and a decent 97.3 QBR. Orton turned the ball over twice today, which has been a new trend, but a likely outcome from his age regression. Orton will look to get on pace next week, but given his age and regression, this might be Orton’s swan song.
WR Ryan Grant
The year of Ryan Grant continues. Another week where Grant leads the offense in receptions, yards and TDs. Grant finished with 8 receptions, 211 yards and a TD. His longest went for a 54 yard. Grant has never had a start to his season like this, so the coaches are excited to see this kind of production. If we can get the rest of offense firing Grant can be a huge threat along with our other all-stars.
WR Will Fuller
Fuller had a limited game today, but deserves credit for a highlight play. Fuller had 2 receptions for 94 yards and a TD, but it was the TD going for 84 yards catch and run touchdown which deserves the kudos. Fuller has had his chances last season and has been hit or miss, but might be finding his space in WR3. We’re excited to see these home run plays from guys lower on the depth chart.
CB Cortez Allen
Allen had his matchup vs Mike Evans today and fought hard. His stat line shows the frustrations against Evans, but he was able to really limit him as much as possible and to his credit Evans finished without a score in the game. Allen on the other hand finished with 9 tackles, 2 TFL, and 2 deflections. Allen was all over the field today and another game where he led the defense in stats.
FS Damarious Randall and SS Landon Collins
Our safeties as a whole did a great job. Both combined for 9 tackles, 1 TFL, 4 deflections (all Randall), and both combined for an interception each. In a game against Mike Evans and OBJ, turnovers limit their production. Both safeties did a nice job slowing down the Rams and ultimately capitalizing on mistakes. Finally, fantastic job specifically from Damarious Randall with 4 deflections. Those numbers are elite.
DT Elijah Qualls and DT Dominique Easley
Both DTs had big games today with big play making that slows down the Rams running game and disrupts the offense with defensive pressure. Both DTs combined with 5 tackles, and both combined for 3 QB sacks. We are beyond excited to see Qualls getting to the QB. After 4 weeks Qualls has 2 QB sacks.

49ers Golden Heroes - Week 2 |
49ers continue their success from last week into week 2 with a 20-3 victory against the Seattle Seahawks. After picking up a win last week against the Arizona Cardinals, we face another tough divisional matchup. With today’s victory, we set ourselves up for a great position for divisional record for the rest of the season. We had a decent day on offense, but our defense really showed up limiting the Seahawks to only 3 points scored in the 3rd quarter. Here are the heroes of the game.
HB Shane Vereen
A familiar showing from last year, Shane Vereen was the only running back to find the end zone this week. Vereen was limited in snaps, rushing for 4 times for 26 yards, but his 9 yard TD run helped control the scoreboard and ultimately keep us ahead in the game. Vereen will continue to have limited snaps with Daniel Thomas ahead on the depth chart, but Vereen is a huge weapon for our running game and playmaking ability.
WR Ryan Grant
This has been the year of Ryan Grant. Stefon Diggs has been really quiet so far after two weeks, but Grant has stepped up to be the top WR. Grant finished the game with 6 receptions, 83 yards, and a touchdown. Grant was the offensive leader today and continues this pop in production from last week’s 100+ yard game. Coaches are taking notice and making sure that Grant stays in the top of the lineup.
Offensive Line
The o line again is a mystery for us after taking on some slower vets. So far they’ve done a good job keeping Orton on his feet, but our running game has plodded these last two weeks. Vereen’s 9 yard TD was encouraging. So far the Offensive line deserve a kudos for their hard work so far.
CB Cortez Allen
Allen had a very nice game today with 7 tackles, 2 deflections and and INT. Divisional games are tough, and turnovers win games. Allen’s INT was critical in games like today. Last year he was Defensive Player of the Year, and he’s showing a little bit of that flair today leading the defense in tackles and the lone turnover.
SS Landon Collins
Collins was elite talent, selected in the first round 2 years ago, but he’s hasn’t quite flashed like elite talent has. Today was a nice exception where Collins has indeed flashed. He finished the game with 5 tackles and 2 deflections. The Seattle running game has always been strong, this year HB Jay Ajayi was limited to 55 yards and the passing game was stuck at 128 yards on the game. Collins fills in that spot where he’s contributing to both running and passing defense.
LOLB Deion Jones
Jones was our top rookie last year and today he had a very nice game. He’s showing off his ability, finishing with 4 tackles and a QB sack. Jones hasn’t always shown up on the stat line, but today shows off his speed and helped slow down the Seattle offense.

WR Will Fuller - 4 catches for 46 yards
