Bengals Announce 2011 Defensive & Special Teams Lineup |
LE Darryl Tapp: Tapp had a career year last season coming off of the left side, a change from the first 4 years of his career. Tapp holds all the phyiscal skills needed to be a breakout end, he just needs to put it together.
DT Jay Ratliff: Ratliff is entering his 7th year as a starter. Hasn't had any insane years, but has been a solid DT for us since day 1. Only DT in the league of 99 STR / 75 ACC
DT Wendell Bryant: Coming off a season ending injury last year, Bryant is hoping to earn another contract with the Bengals. Outlook is not promising, with the selection of Nick Fairley in the most recent draft.
RE Mike Neal: Neal had a quiet rookie season, with 31 tackles, 8 TFL & 2 sacks. With this athletic ability Neal will continue start in 2011. We did draft depth at RE in the form of Karl Klug to potentially slide in if things aren't going well.
LOLB Shawn Crable:Crable has yet to live up to expectations placed upon him from management. Hopefully 2011 can be the year for him to breakout, and it may have to be with it being a contract year.
MLB Martez Wilson:Martez Wilson, the rookie out of Illinois has big shoes to fill when the Bengals opted to let David Harris walk to division rival Steelers. With his 6'4" frame and quick feet we hope he will be a menace in the mid field for years to come.
ROLB Thomas Howard:Howard has been a solid force at ROLB for 5 years now. An athletic feak who is finally getting his football IQ up to match his potential. Led all OLBs last season in tackles, and 2nd for all OLBs in TFL and forced fumbles.
CB Jerome Murphy:2010's 2nd overall pick, and Defensive Rookie of the Year, Jerome Murphy has been all that and more. 6 INT his rookie year, we expect even more from Murphy this year as our for sure #1 CB of the next decade.
CB Dunta Robinson:Robinson provides a much needed veteran presence on the defense. a 6 year starter and role player last year, Robinson is hoping to stay a starting CB in 2011 and pave the way for our future CBs in Harris and Carroll.
FS Robert Sands: Drafted 2.2 this year, Sands is the next attempt at finding a long term solution at saftey in the ever revolving door of players. With freak size/athetic ability we hope to groom Sands into being a Pro Bowler.
SS Patrick Chung: Entering his 3rd season, Chung hasn't done too terribly much in the secondary. While he hasn't given up catches, we need to see more from Chung in 2011 and onward. History shows, GM TInnin isn't shy about brining in new safties.
K Kyle Schlicher:99 KAC, all that matters really. Will handle kickoff duty also. Brought in during FA this offseason.
P Brook Black:Career 26% inside the 20. He' a punter, alright. Brough in during FA this offseason.
KR/PR LaTarence Dunbar: Hehe LaTarence run fast. Soley an experiment this point, we want to see what his 99 spd/agi/acc can do on the KR for us. Greg Jennings will be the contingency plan.
We are a raw group, that cannot be doubted. Hopefully our players gifted athletic abilities can make up for the lack of awareness across the board.
We expect at least a wild card appearance this year, it is very needed from a progression standpoint. Again, the future is bright, but the present is not guaranteed. |

Bengals Official 2011 Offense |

QB Isaiah Stanback: Stanback showed that he has what it takes to lead this team. 75k AP invested into Throw Power and a contract keeping him in town until 2016. This is his second year with the Bengals, being traded from the Jets for a 2nd round pick in 2010.
HB Ryan Mathews: Coming off a rookie campaign of nearly 1200 yards and 6 TDs. Not quite what was expected from the 7th overall pick in the 2010 draft, but still a good rookie year. Currently sitting on 6 progression points for next year, hopefully we can use Mathews more effectively this year.
FB Oren O'Neal: New member of the Bengals, and is a FB that perfectly fits GM Tinnin's gameplan. Athletic with a very high run block. We are sad to see the Moreno experiment come to an end, but whatever it takes to get Mathews more yards .
WR Chad Johnson: #85 has returned. 7 years and 7000 yards in Oakland, Ocho Cinco chose to come back to the Bengals to finish out his career. As well as sliding in as the #1 WR, he will also mentor the relatively young WR core of Benn & Heyward-Bey.
WR LaTarence Dunbar: Fresh import from KC to top off our new look WR core for 2011. The now journeyman WR should open the top up for Stanback. 'Fuck it, LaTarence down there somewhere"
TE Jermaine Gresham: We struggled to work Gresham into the gameplan last year. He has the size and speed to be a danger, hopefully with the addition of Dunbar/85, Gresham can find space to be open in 2011. Currently sitting on 5 progression points.
LT Jared Veldheer:The towering 22 year old, another fruit of the strategic rebuild. Valdheer should be a long term part of our Oline, as we just hope he continues to progress.
LG Chilo Rachal: He does it for free? That is not a typo. Philly is fronting the bill on Rachal in return for HB Rashard Mendenhall. Rachall posesses elite athletic ability, along with a behind schedule awareness. Rachal hopes to earn himself a long time starting gig with the Bengals this year.
C Eric Wood: In what is being described as a 'clerical error' Wood did not start last year. There have been grumblings from inside the offices that GM Tinnin doesn't know the differnece betwen C Eric Wood & C Jon Weeks. So there really is no telling who will be playing center this year. But it is penciled to be Wood.
RG Sam Baker: Baker was a star his rookie year at LT, producing a 78/2 year, but has struggled since being moved to RG, giving up 15 sacks in the last 2 seasons. In the final year of his rookie deal, Baker needs to find his footing to stick around. With veteran LG Larry Turner looming, there is not much room for error.
RT Troy Kropog: Kropog has been a ride. With sophmore progression and 10 progression points this offseason, hopefully he can produce a little more. Through 2 years having 100 pancakes and 29 sacks allowed is not a good look. Nowhere to go but up.
Our future is bright, plain and simple. But the low awareness across the board may come back to bite us in the end, especially on the oline. But with an average age of 26 (24.5 with Benn/Bey instead of Johnson/Dunbar).
Other key players on the offense include WR Arrelious Benn , WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, & HB Antonio Pittman
I believe we can be very competitive this year, but much like last year, progression is going to be the key.
Week 1 sees the Bengals traveling to the now Tom Collins-less Browns for what could be an early indicator of what to expect from the team this year. |

Bengals Prepare for Browns - 2005.1 |
The defending AFC North champion Bengals start their 2005 campaign on the road, but not far from home, traveling north to the factory of sadness, Cleveland. Coming off an 8-8 season, you'd think Tom is on the hot seat, the team looks nothing close to what it did last year. This could be an disadvantage for us, but also an advantage.
Keys to success
Shut down Warner
Kurt Warner's regular season debut needs to go horribly. We have to get pressure on Warner, attacking the slow offensive line, and keep him from connecting deep with Lelie and Calico.
Air Raid offense?
Browns secondary doesn't have much speed. Their fastest corner is 5'8. We need to take advantages of mismatches. Chase Lyman could have a huge debut, with his 6'4 frame.
Return of 04 Defense
The 04 Bengals D was stout. Something that GM Tinnin usually hasn't been able to say about his teams historically. Will the same defense show up again this year? With a new, young, freakishly athletic DT core, and improved LB depth, the defense should be better, but the new look Browns will be a great test.
The AFC North is a 2 team competition this year. Potentially 3. It's us or Cleveland. This is gonna be a great game to start the year with. Good luck, Tom. Very excited to see how it goes. |
