Offseason

RESIGN
The Indianapolis Colts resigned ROLB Mark Nzeocha to a 5 year deal… Salary = $6.120M / Bonus = $0.900M (1st year of contract counts $0.850M against cap).
Though the contributions over the years has been minimal… the depth at a reasonable price tage could not be passed up – that, and the fact is – the Colts didn’t really have anyone else they were looking to guarantee the players return. Key Attributes worth mentioning: SPD = 82 / STR = 85 / AGI = 83 / ACC = 86 / TAK = 75.

RESTRUCTURE
The Indianapolis Colts LOCKED up CB Eric Berry to a 7 year deal… Salary = $36.840M / Bonus = $8.190M (1st year of contract counts $2.920M against cap).
This was priority number one for GM Darryl Breckheimer… ensuring his most promising defensive asset had no chance of exited anytime soon – a seven year deal should have Murray in Indianapolis well past his BRIGHTEST and most productive years and then he can be leveraged as a MENTOR for his eventual replacement. Key Attributes worth mentioning: SPD = 97 / AWR = 77 / AGI = 92 / ACC = 98.

MATCH ELIGIBLE FREE AGENT
The Indianapolis Colts have declared RE David Parry their Match Eligible Free Agent. The numbers indicate that an offer from another team would tender a 3rd round future pick as compensation – the Colts would decline matching any minimum offer and accept the lowest return. Key Attributes worth mentioning: SPD = 74 / STR = 89 / AGI = 74 / ACC = 83 / TAK = 75.

TRADES
#1 – Wednesday, May 22nd: The Indianapolis Colts move down – sending (to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) 1.02 and a future 4th ropund pick for 1.04 2.21 and a future 2nd round pick.
Bottom line, GM Darryl Breckheimer never intended on keeping both 1.02 and 1.05 (1.05 offers 25K Aps) – so it was easy to move the second overall selection knowing how favorable the chart is for the top three selections.

#2 – Thursday, May 23rd: The Indianapolis Colts acquire a DEEP threat to stretch the field – sending 1.04 and a future 5th round pick for WR Ryan Grant and a future 2nd round pick.
Full disclosure… the Indianapolis Colts tried hard to acquire Grant in the 2018 offseason – though it’s a year later, the team is thrilled to have an elite pass catching asset for QB Nate Sudfeld.

#3 – Friday, May 24th: The Indianapolis Colts acquire HB David Wilson… who will compete for the starting role – sending 2.21 (to the Falcons) for HB David Wilson and 5.02.
I believe in having depth at the HB position… assuming it can be done at a reasonable price. The draft class is subpar this year, and outside of Tony Pollard, the options are VERY thin.

#4 – Monday, May 27th: The SALLOWED hard on this one… sending FS Malik Hooker & WR Curtis Samuel (to the Broncos) for FS Tashaun Gipson, 2.01 and 2.13.
Realistically, Samuel being moved had NO impact (buried on the depth chart)… but, trading away Hooker was difficult! The initial offer sent by the Broncos was countered and GM Darryl Breckheimer was hoping it’d be quickly rejected. Having Gipson come over is a solid fill for 2 season and LOVE having the draft pick capitol of 2.01 and 2.13 (I’ll get over losing Hooker).

Kansas City Chiefs 30 @ Indianapolis Colts 17

Game Recap
TOO MANY TURNOVER… a fumbled punt (returned for a TD) and 2 INT’s by QB Nate Sudfeld killed any hope of being able to win this match up with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Offense
Obviously, it’s disappointing to see turnover (2 INT’s this week)… but, Nate Sudfeld has shown nice progress from a completion rate standpoint week over week (37.5%, 47.06%, 53.85% 56.52% and 55.81%) – need to keep him in the mid 50’s %. The running game was acceptable averaging above 4 yards per carry (HB Montee Ball had 2 TD’s). It was nice to see Hopkins and LaFell have 15 receptions between them [for 182 yards]. Finally, credit to the offensive line who did a great job keeping Sudfeld fairly clean (only 1 sack allowed).

Defense
The defense played well enough to give the team a shot at victory… but again, turnovers got the best of the Indianapolis Colts.

Rookie Watch
LT Brian O’Neill… 9 pancakes and 0 SACKS allowed
MLB Roquan Smith… 6 tackles and 1 for a loss

Next Up
The Indianapolis Colts make their way to Washington D.C. in what appears to be a fairly close match up. The Redskins are 2-3 (as are the Colts) and trying to keep pace with the undefeated Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East. The key to victory for the Colts will be to test QB Keith Wenning… he’s does a nice job spreading the ball around to his targets and voided mistakes [9 TD’s vs 4 INT’s]. The Colts should find it easy to control the time of possession – the Washington Redskins rank 32nd in rush defense, which should offer HB Montee Ball and excellent chance for a GREAT day!

Indianapolis Colts 34 @ Jacksonville Jaguars 14

Game Recap
HUGE win… any time you can DOMINATE one of your divisional rivals – you have to celebrate. The Indianapolis Colts significantly won the the following measures: First Downs [11 vs 7], Total Offense [385 yards vs 254 yards], Time of Possession [26:27 vs 17:17]. The Colts were able to abuse Jacksonville Jaguars QB Jameis Winston… the defense sacked him 3 times and forced him into 3 INT’s. There were rumors that GM Oli Ratajczak exited the owners booth and left the game at halftime [Jaguars were trailing 21-0].

Offense
It was a GREAT showing… nearly 400 yards and 30+ points for the offense! The highlight from the offensive unit was the pair brought in this offseason via trade… QB Nate Sudfeld [13 for 23 for 240 yards with 4 TD’s and 2 INT’s] and WR DeAndre Hopkins [5 receptions for 126 yards and 3 TD’s].

Defense
The defense was impressive… the front three applied pressure on QB Jameis Winston [3 sacks: 2 sacks by DT B.J. Raji and 1 sack by LE Taco Charlton] and when Winston was able to get the ball out, the linebackers and defensive backs were able to collect 9 deflections and 3 INT’s. Historically, DT B.J. Raja continues to climb the All Time Sack List… with 57 sacks Rja is now ranked 43rd (pretty impressive for a DT).

Rookie Watch
LT Brian O’Neill… 8 pancakes and allowed 1 sacks
MLB Roquan Smith… 6 tackles and 1 deflection

Next Up
The Indianapolis Colts make their way to Kansas City to face the HEAVILY favored Chiefs. The Chiefs are 2-1 (there only loss to the Chargers in a VERY close game) and lead the AFC West. The Colts defensive backfiled will be tested by QB Chandler Harnish… who has some struggles adapting to a new scheme / playbook. Keep the approach simple… take care of the ball and avoid turnovers and contain WR Justin Hunter and you give yourself a shot at winning.

Indianapolis Colts 22 @ Denver Broncos 20

Game Recap
This one was close from start to finish… the Colts kicked the winning FG with :04 remaining on the clock. For the Broncos, watching QB Lamar Jackson show what the future might hold was impressive [14 of 24 for 286 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT]… he was able to connect with WR Darren Waller on 5 occasions for 169 yards and a TD. On the other side, the Colts finally had a respectable day rushing, 27 carries for 112 yards [4.15 avg] but had to lean on special teams far too often [5 for 5 on FGs].

Offense
It was nice to see QB Nate Sudfeld play within himself… and take what was available vs forcing situations [14 for 26 for 218 yards and a TD – QB rtg of 94.7]. On the day WR Brandon LaFell was Sudfelds favorite target [4 receptions for 110 yards and a TD]. Shout out to K Caleb Sturgis made all 5 FG attempts [3 of the 5 FGs were outside of the redzone, 38+ yards].

Defense
The Colts starting linebackers had one HELL of a day… combined they had 27 tackles, 6 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks and 2 deflections! The was some concern about how veteran Marvin White would do filling in for injured Malik Hooker [White has rust on his wheels for sure [SPD = 83 / ACC = 83]… but he surprised with 4 tackles, an INT and 2 deflections.

Rookie Watch
LT Brian O’Neill… 4 pancakes and allowed 0 sacks
MLB Roquan Smith… 10 tackles, 2 for a loss and 1 sack

Next Up
The Indianapolis Colts make their way to Jacksonville to face divisional rival Jaguars. The Jaguars are 3-0 and are tied for first place in the AFC South divisional race. The Colts defensive backfield will have their hands full trying to contain WR Justin Blackmon… who has THREE straight games with 100+ yards and 5 TDs on the year [on pace for a career season].

New York Giants 27 @ Indianapolis Colts 12

Game Recap
It was NEVER close… the Giants won this game in every possible measure one might review. First downs [18 vs 5], third down conversion [50% vs 10%], rushing yards [202 vs 37], total yards [325 vs 196], [turnovers [0 vs 1] and time of possession [27.48 vs 15.59]. Even though HB Melvin Gordan was knocked out early… HB Bernard Pierce carried the load just fine [28 for 118 yards].

Offense
It came late in the 4th quarter… TE Jack Doyle hauled in a 66 yard TD and had 3 receptions for 97 yards on the day [the lone highpoint offensively].
The running game was disappointing… AGAIN. The team had a total on 37 yards on 18 attempts [2.05 avg]. The struggle to convert on 3rd down obviously is ensuring offensive output is meager at best. It’s a bit early to call for a change in the starting line-up… but I suspect many more disappointing weeks might force the coach's hand.
The Indianapolis Colts used the Bills playbook (again) week 2… and made no changes to passing/running % and aggression [went with 40% pass and 40 aggression].

Defense
The Giants really didn’t overwhelm the Colts defense through the air… which makes one wonder why the defensive backs had so many tackles [23 tackles]. The front 7 need to do a better job of containing the opposition. It was great to see OLB T.J. Watt contribute 6 tackles… 3 of those tackles were for a loss!

Rookie Watch
LT Brian O’Neill… 4 pancakes and allowed 0 sacks
MLB Roquan Smith… 4 tackles, 1 for a loss

Next Up
The Indianapolis Colts visit the Denver Broncos week 3… the Giants are also winless at 0-2 [coming off a game where the Seattle Seahawks won a close fought battle]. Broncos have a healthy roster…. But lost FS Malik Hooker for 2-4 weeks – the Colts have been rumored to be signing free agent FS Marvin White.
