The Green Bay Packers entered the 2016 Madden draft with high hopes of bolstering their roster and finding talented players who could contribute to their team's success. With their first pick at 2.16, the Packers selected tight end Austin Hooper. Known for his athleticism and pass-catching ability, Hooper was expected to provide a reliable target for quarterback Andrew Luck. With his size and skill set, Hooper had the potential to become a valuable asset in both the passing and blocking game.
In the third round, with the 3.16 pick, the Packers opted to add more firepower to their receiving corps by selecting wide receiver Laquon Treadwell. Treadwell was highly regarded as a top prospect entering the draft, known for his strong hands, route-running ability, and physicality. The Packers hoped that Treadwell's presence would give Luck another dynamic weapon in the passing game, capable of making big plays and creating mismatches against opposing defenses.
Later in the third round, with the 3.29 pick, the Packers made a surprising move by selecting defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway.
In the sixth round, at 6.18, the Packers made a shrewd move by adding depth to their quarterback position with the selection of Jacoby Brissett. Brissett was a talented quarterback with a strong arm and good mobility. While he may have been viewed as a developmental prospect at the time, the Packers saw potential in Brissett and believed he could provide valuable support to Luck as a backup or potentially develop into a starting-caliber quarterback in the future.
Overall, the Packers made some intriguing selections in the 2016 Madden draft, aiming to strengthen their offense and add depth to their defense. Hooper and Treadwell were expected to contribute immediately, while the selection of Brissett offered long-term potential at the quarterback position. It would be interesting to see how these players developed and impacted the Packers' success in the 2016 SFL season. |

Free Agent Frenzy |
After clearing out the roster of all the dead weight, the Packers were in desperate need of some new blood. GM Hickman had his hands full trying to fill up the roster, trying to get a balance of young blood and veteran savvy.
The number one target on his list was Cornerback Prince Amukamara, who was an after thought of the Rams, who let him slide into free agency without any tenders. Quarterback John Beck was also acquired to possibly be the starter this season, but most pundits expect him to be the backup behind Andrew Luck.
Green Bay brought a few veterans to help mentor the young talent. Strong Safety Antoine Bethea, Punter Kyle Larson, Wide Receiver Chase Lyman, and Offensive Tackle John Greco will definitely help mold this young team.
The Packers didn't stop there and signed a few more depth players, including Offensive Tackle Joseph Barksdale, Strong Safety Kurt Coleman and Outside Linebacker JT Thomas.
Never one to shy away from upside and potential, GM Hickman signed some undrafted Rookies, Half Back Kenny Hilliard and Free Safety Kyshoen Jarrett |

Packers Offseason Recap |
Pre-Draft
After an awful season the Packers decided to rebuild a trim the “fat”. Aging veterans Free Safety Eric Frampton, and Right Guard Kurt Quarterman were released after no suitors were interested in trades. Defensive End Jay Moore, Center Kyle Cook and Left Tackle Oniel Cousins were traded to the 49ers for a second, third, and fourth round picks.
Pre-Draft the Packers traded pick 1.31, acquired in the Matt Ryan/Andrew Luck trade, to the Denver Broncos for Defensive End Tank Carradine. Initially brought in the replace the vacating Jay Moore, Tank will stick on the right side.
Draft Weekend
Leading into the draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put Defensive End Derek Wolfe on the block, which Packers GM Gary Hickman, was eager to snap up. We Acquired Wolfe and the Bucs 3rd rounder in 2016 for the Packers 1st in 2016 and the 30th pick in the 6th round of this year.
On Day one of the Draft the Packers jumped up 4 spots, from the 17th spot to the 13th spot, sending the Chargers 3.19 and 4.1. This allowed them to grab cornerback Eric Rowe out of Utah, who was high on their shortlist of players.
The Packers also made a depth move, grabbing return Specialist Tim Toone and 5.13 for 5.1 and 5.30. This move was made as Allen Robinson is expected to fill a bigger role in the offence in the upcoming season.
Day Two saw GM Hickman send disgruntled cornerback Devin McCourty and pick 4.09, and a 2016 6th to the Colts for 3.20 and their second in 2016. This movie, while needed, puts more pressure on the 1st rounder Eric Rowe to play well this upcoming season.
The final move of the draft for the Packers saw them acquiring Offensive Guard Ricky Wagner, picks 4.14 and the broncos 5th in 2016 for Indianapolis’ 2016 second round pick and 6.1.
Packers 2015 Draft picks:
1.13 – Cornerback – Utah – Eric Rowe – 6’1” 205 lbs
2.17 – Middle Linebacker - UCLA - Eric Kendricks – 6’0” 232 lbs
3.20 – Offensive Guard – Florida State - Tre’ Jackson – 6’4” 330 lbs
4.14 – Fullback – Notre Dame - Ben Koyack – 6’5” 255 lbs
5.13 – Running Back - Indiana - Tevin Coleman – 6’1” 210 lbs
Eric Rowe will more than likely start for the Packers this season and will shore up the position with Stanley-Jean Baptiste for the next decade. Eric Kendricks will be pushing current starter Korey Toomer for the job and will be a heated Training Camp battle. Tre’ Jackson will most likely be a backup this season and will look to over throw current season expected starters Garrett Gilkey and Ricky Wagner, in future seasons. Ben Koyack was drafted to be groomed as a replacement for the departed Packers mainstay Brian Leonard, despite playing Tight End in college. Tevin Coleman was drafted as purely depth and will be a special team’s player.
Post Draft
After the dust settled from the Draft, the Packers cleaned more out the house, including backup offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger, punter Matt Dodge, cornerback Gregory Toler, wide receiver AJ Jenkins, and Safety Darian Stewart. Most were seen as expendable and as cancer in the locker room.
The Packers have a need for numerous players to fill out the roster and will look to the free agent pool to round out their roster heading into Training Camp and Preseason. |

Packers Offseason Update |
Just before the calendar year was over the packers decided to extend Defensive stand-out Justin Durant. As the quarterback and unquestioned leader of the defense, General Manager Gary Hickman thought this was a no-brainer.
With a highly touted free agency class incoming, the Packers decided to trim some fat and get rid of some unnecessarily high salary contracts. Gone from the team are CBs Marlin Jackson & Antwoine Sanders, as well as Defensive Tackle William Joseph. Joseph had found himself expendable after the late-season emergence of Anthony Montgomery and highly touted rookie Gerald McCoy.
With the declining speed of Andre Davis and with Dwayne Bowe not being resigned, the Packers went after late last year's first-round pick Wide Reciever Demaryius Thomas, which cost them pick 13 in the first this season. We could have kept the pick and drafted someone but the likely hood of getting someone of Thomas' caliber at any position, the organization thought was unlikely.
After testing the water's in free Agency, backup Quarterback David Garrard and highly athletic fullback Brian Leonard have returned to the fold. New players joining the team include Right guard Kurt Quarterman, Free Safety Eric Frampton, Tight End Clark Harris, and Defensive Tackle. All of these players brought in will be starters and very well could end up as such, with great training camps and preseasons. Also signed was restrictive Free Agent Defensive End Jay Moore, previously with the Dolphins. As someone who is match eligible and knowing that Miami's cap situation was tight the Packers sent him a very large, heavily guaranteed contract, which hopefully makes them think twice and let the big man come to the Frozen tundra for the 2011 season.
With the signing of Quarterman, the Packers have already shipped out the previous starting Right Guard Ben Wyss, who was traded with a 4th round pick and received a second in return. While management was wanting to keep Wyss in the fold for the future, they thought with the other players due up for contracts next offseason, that he was very unlikely to have been able to have been kept. |

Go flying off!
After a red hot start going 5-2, the Packers finish the season 7-9, going 2-7 in the last 9 games. The second half was a major letdown after the first half, but it is progress from last year and gives GM Gary Hickman a few more seasons to see his rebuild come together.
One positive note was mid-season acquisition WR Justin Harper who had 6 touchdowns in 8 games, all of which came in the last 5. |
