Washington Redskins Mid Season Roster Management
WASHINGTON REDSKINS MID SEASON ROSTER MANAGEMENT

Before the trade deadline, the Washington Redskins struck a deal with the Houston Texans to acquire veteran cornerback Akasi Owusu-Ansah in exchange for free safety Calvin Pryor. Washington also received a 6th-round pick as part of the trade.

Owusu-Ansah is expected to take on a starting role in the Redskins' defense, which will likely push Vontae Davis into the nickel or dime position.

When Keith Wenning was injured, the Redskins were forced to sign another quarterback due to roster constraints. They found Brandon Allen in free agency but had to cut halfback Jordan Scarlett to make room, as their roster was already full.

In other transactions, the Redskins successfully restructured the contracts of two of their top offensive players: halfback James Conner and wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster.

Both players, who are 24 years old, were signed to 7-year contracts. The contract details are as follows:

HB James Conner: 27.3M/10.85M
WR Juju Smith-Schuster: 28.98M/11.55M

Additionally, the team invested significant resources in an intensive training program for wide receiver Robert Woods to improve his speed. His speed rating increased from 97 to 99.

Regarding rumors, the Redskins were reportedly close to making a deal to bring tight end Rob Gronkowski to Washington, but negotiations eventually cooled down.

With the trade deadline now behind them, the Redskins hope they won't need to make any further transactions until the offseason unless injuries force their hand.

Washington Redskins Weeks 6 to 11 Recap
WASHINGTON REDSKINS WEEKS 6 TO 11 RECAP

After a strong start to the season, where the Redskins recorded four wins and only one loss, they hit a rough patch in the middle, managing only two wins and three losses between Weeks 6 and 11. Notably, QB Keith Wenning strained his shoulder at the start of the Week 7 game against the Bills and is expected to return in the next game against the Dolphins in Week 12.

In Week 6, the Redskins hosted the Buccaneers in Washington. The game had two very distinct halves. In the first half, the Redskins scored 16 straight points with 1 touchdown and 3 field goals. However, in the second half, the Buccaneers took control and scored 31 unanswered points, winning the game 31-16. From the middle of the second quarter until the end of the game, the Redskins' offense struggled, managing only one trip to the red zone, which ended in a turnover on downs during garbage time. Amazingly, Ezekiel Elliott ran for 260 yards and 3 TDs, with touchdown runs of 76, 83, and 12 yards.

In Week 7, the Redskins traveled to Buffalo to face the Bills, hoping to break their losing streak. On Wenning's first pass attempt, he was injured and had to leave the game. Backup QB Jacoby Brissett stepped up with an impressive performance, throwing for 200 yards and 1 TD. His solid play, along with a strong running game led by James Conner, who rushed for over 100 yards, secured a 25-17 victory.

Week 8 was the Redskins' bye week, which came at an ideal time, giving Wenning more time to recover.

In Week 9, the Redskins faced their toughest opponent yet: the divisional rival Cowboys in Dallas, with Brissett starting. As expected, the game was challenging. By the middle of the second quarter, Dallas had already taken a 21-3 lead. Despite some resistance from the Redskins, the Cowboys never lost control of the game. The Redskins, forced to focus on the passing game due to the large deficit, struggled to catch up. The game ended 40-27, with some of the Redskins' points coming in garbage time. Brissett had a rough outing, throwing 4 interceptions and taking 5 sacks—by far the worst passing performance of the season for Washington. James Conner was a bright spot, rushing for 180 yards and scoring 2 TDs. On the Cowboys' side, Glennon threw for 368 yards with a passer rating of 115.1, and WR Latimer caught 8 passes for 187 yards.

In Week 10, the Redskins returned to the win column. They hosted the Seahawks in what would be Brissett’s last start. In a more defensively oriented game, the Redskins executed more successful drives, relying heavily on James Conner, who ran for 137 yards. Brissett wasn't asked to do much, throwing for only 123 yards with 2 interceptions. The Redskins' defense shined, sacking Tyler Thigpen 6 times, and the game ended 20-10.

The Redskins' most recent game, in Week 11, was against the Panthers. Although there were hopes that Wenning would return, his questionable status led the team to play it safe and keep him sidelined. The game was expected to be a win around the league, but Brissett struggled, throwing a couple of interceptions and completing only 10 passes. The running game was ineffective, and the Panthers outplayed the Redskins, led by rookie Gardner Minshew, who threw for 337 yards and 2 TDs. His connections with WRs Dorial Green-Beckham and Kelvin Benjamin were crucial on several tough third downs. The final score was 31-24 in favor of the Panthers.

After 11 weeks and 10 games, the Redskins sit in second place in the NFC East with a 6-4 record, behind the Cowboys, who are 8-2. Next week, the Redskins will visit the Miami Dolphins, marking Wenning's much-anticipated return to the field.

Washington Redskins Week 5 Highlights
WASHINGTON REDSKINS WEEK 5 HIGHLIGHTS

For Week 5 of the 2019 SFL season, the Washington Redskins traveled to Philadelphia to play against their division rival, the Eagles.

Having the first possession of the game, the Redskins couldn't capitalize on it, and a sack on the first play forced them to punt after a 3-and-out.

The Eagles, however, made a statement on their first offensive play with an 88-yard rushing touchdown by Tony Pollard.

Washington bounced back right away with a great drive, mixing runs and passes, culminating in a touchdown pass from Wenning to rookie tight end Noah Fant, his first of the season.

The Eagles were held in their following possession, forcing a punt, and the Redskins maintained their momentum with good runs from Conner and passes from Wenning, reaching the red zone at the start of the 2nd quarter. However, the Eagles managed to stop them at the 8-yard line, allowing only a field goal, making it a 10-7 game in favor of Washington.

And that was it. Washington's offense wouldn't score again in the game. It wasn't clear if the Eagles adjusted to them, or if they just fell off track, digging themselves deeper with each successful Eagles drive, increasing the gap in the score.

The choice of plays was a bit questionable, as they kept trying to pass on early downs even while still in the lead, despite the run game working well. But it wasn't just that.

In the middle of the 2nd quarter, the Eagles took the lead with a deep pass to Stefon Diggs. A couple of punts later, Michael Crabtree was found wide open for another long touchdown. A 3-and-out from Washington, with Philadelphia calling some timeouts, still gave them the chance to kick a field goal with 6 seconds left on the clock before halftime. Redskins 10 - 24 Eagles.

At the start of the 3rd quarter, the Eagles kept the same trend, going full throttle, and connected on another deep pass to Crabtree, who was wide open again.

At this point, it was hard to expect much from Washington's offense, which relies heavily on the balance between passes and good runs from Conner and Fournette. Trailing by 21 points, the desperation to score was clear, and the running game was no longer an option. This only made it easier for the Eagles' defense.

The Eagles' offense, unfazed, kept scoring. They completed a cross-field pass to Corey Fuller and, in the next possession, a running touchdown from Alvin Kamara, setting the final score of the game. Redskins 10 - 45 Eagles.

No player from the Redskins wanted to talk to the media after the game. Coach Gibbs addressed some topics on the loss in a very calm manner. It's not what was seen on the sideline during the game, though.

"Bad days happen, losses happen, it's not the end of the world, not the end of the season. We will use it as a learning experience and come back stronger next week."

They better come back stronger next week, as they'll face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are on a 3-game winning streak.

STATS HIGHLIGHTS:

WR Robert Woods - 6 repections, 124 yards.
CB Dre Kirkpatrick - 6 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 3 deflections.
SS Tre Flowers - 5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss.
MLB Raekwon McMillan - 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 deflection.

Washington Redskins Week 4 Highlights
WASHINGTON REDSKINS WEEK 4 HIGHLIGHTS

On a warm yet windy afternoon, the Washington Redskins hosted the New England Patriots in their Week 4 matchup, a game filled with significant firsts for the D.C. team.

The Redskins' game started in familiar fashion with an interception by CB Vontae Davis on the Patriots' first drive.

Capitalizing on the turnover, the Redskins swiftly scored a touchdown. Wenning connected with Jimmy Graham on a 3-yard pass.

The Patriots responded with a field goal on their next possession. Adjusting to Washington's running game, the New England defense forced a pivotal 3-and-out.

But the Redskins' defense was also holding firm, McMillan's crucial sack on 2nd down forced another Patriots punt.

A series of setbacks followed for the Redskins, including consecutive false start penalties and errant throws by Wenning. The Patriots capitalized, mounting a successful running game drive culminating in Doug Martin's 27-yard rush and a 1-yard pass to Deebo Samuel for a touchdown, putting the Patriots ahead 10-7.

Struggling with their running game and an off-day for Keith Wenning, the Redskins managed to only tie the game with a field goal.

Doug Martin continued to shine, setting up the Patriots for another field goal before halftime, taking a 13-10 lead.

With only 1 minute and 10 seconds left in the half, the Redskins answered with their own field goal, tying the game at halftime.

The Patriots' run defense dominated the start of the third quarter, forcing a Redskins punt after a 3-and-out.

Fortunately, Washington's defense stepped up, with LOLB Fred Warner intercepting Derek Carr for a touchdown, marking Washington's first defensive score of the season.

Just as the defense adjusted to Doug Martin's runs, the Patriots turned to their passing game. A touchdown pass to Victor Cruz was initially called, but upon review, ruled out of bounds. The Patriots settled for another field goal, trailing Washington 20-16.

In the subsequent drive, Keith Wenning suffered his first sack of the season, forcing the Redskins to punt.

Another punt exchange ensued before the Redskins extended their lead late in the third quarter. Conner's 55-yard touchdown run, supported by solid blocking, widened their lead to 27-16.

Wenning continued to struggle, with a promising 93-yard pass to Juju Smith-Schuster negated by a holding penalty. The QB then suffered a head injury on the following play.

The Patriots capitalized on the passing game, connecting with WRs Quick and Boyd, and TE Cameron. They scored a touchdown on a 5-yard pass from Carr to Boyd. A failed 2-point conversion left the score at 27-22 in favor of Washington with 7:22 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Washington aimed to secure the win by running down the clock with successive first downs. However, they faced resistance from the Patriots' defense, and Wenning suffered another sack attempting to pass, quickly returning possession to New England.

The Patriots' passing game drove them back into offensive territory, but a crucial sack by Shane Ray on 3rd down forced them to settle for a field goal, making it 27-25.

With just 3 minutes remaining, Washington needed to gain a few first downs to seal the game, but the Patriots' defense halted their ground attack, reclaiming possession with 1:50 left.

Washington's secondary stood strong, forcing a turnover on downs, allowing them to secure victory with a series of kneel-downs.

Besides the 1st defensive TD and the 1st Sack allowed, it was the 1st game that Wenning had less than 200 yards passed. He had only 78 this time. Also the 1st game he was under 100 on rating.

Maybe it was a full team focus problem, since it was also the 1st game that the Redkins commited more than 2 penalties. They had 7 calls this week, including a weird false start on a QB-Kneel formation.

General Manager Vinícius Ferreira spoke to the media after the game and said it is good to win even not playing well, it gives the team the alert that they have to improve, while not harming the team record.

Next week the Redskins will face a division rival. They travel to Philadelphia to face the 2-1 Eagles.

STATS HIGHLIGHTS:

HB James Conner - 136 yards, 1 TD.
LOLB Fred Warner - 2 tackles, 1 interception, 1 TD.
MLB Raekwon McMillan - 11 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 deflections.
CB Vontae Davis - 8 tackles, 1 interception, 5 deflections.

Washington Redskins Week 3 Highlights
WASHINGTON REDSKINS WEEK 3 HIGHLIGHTS

On a rainy afternoon, the Washington Redskins hosted the New York Giants at FedEx Field for their Week 3 matchup.

Both teams were 2-0, sharing the top of the NFC East, which meant that the winner would take the lead alone. The Giants showed how much they wanted that lead right from the start. The first offensive play of the game was a 71-yard pass from Deshaun Watson to WR John Ross for a touchdown.

Four possessions later, two from each side, and not a single first down was conquered. Meanwhile, Wenning flirted with a pick two or three times but got lucky as the defenders dropped it. There was also a fumble by Juju Smith-Schuster on a punt return, but he recovered it himself.

t wasn't until the second quarter that the Redskins had a solid drive, with a very good mix of running and passing plays. With 5:26 of time of possession, they reached their first points of the game with a 17-yard pass to FB Nick Bawden.

The following drive by the Giants ended in a third-down sack from ROLB Tyus Bowser.

Close to the 2-minute warning, the Redskins scored again with a 36-yard pass to Juju Smith-Schuster, making the game 14-7 with 2:08 left in the second quarter.

But the Giants wouldn't take long to tie the game again, with a touchdown pass from Watson to Chris Godwin.

Even with the short time left on the clock, the Redskins managed to reach the Giants' red zone with a long pass to rookie Hakeem Butler. However, a fumble on the following play by Juju Smith-Schuster killed the drive and ended the half with the game tied.

The Redskins started the second half with a very solid drive, with a lot of runs by Conner and Fournette, but they were stopped at the 1-yard line and had to settle for a field goal, retaking the lead 17-14.

Near the end of the third quarter, Washington had another good drive, and with the help of a defensive pass interference in the end zone, it was easy for Conner to score a 1-yard touchdown run. Washington 24 - 14 New York.

The momentum was all on the Redskins' side when, on the first Giants play, MLB Kentrell Brothers intercepted Watson, leaving Wenning at the 23-yard line on offense.

But it didn't help much, as they had to kick a field goal after going 3-and-out with a drop from Kevin White. The game was still two possessions, but now 27-14.

The Giants didn't do much with the ball either, and the Redskins fumbled on their own 25-yard line, leaving a short field for Watson.

The Giants converted it quickly. After three runs from Melvin Gordon, he was in the end zone, making it 27-21 and shifting the momentum.

The Redskins had a 3-and-out, worrying the coaches about what seemed to be an imminent comeback. Melvin Gordon was moving the chains, and with the clock under 4 minutes in the fourth quarter, the Giants were inside the 10-yard line. But then, the defense prevailed. With a couple of run stops, a deflection from Cruikshank, and a bad throw from Watson under pressure, the Giants turned it over on downs.

The Redskins still faced unnecessary danger by not running down the clock in the final plays. They had to punt it back to New York with 59 seconds left. Luckily, the defense was on fire and forced another turnover on downs, ending the game 27-21 in favor of Washington.

It was a close but very important win for the Redskins, taking the lead of the NFC East alone with three wins. They know that tougher games will come, and defeats too, so winning early in the season and opening up an advantage over other competitors is essential.
