2024 Vikings Individual Stats Review
The Vikings won the Super Bowl! We had not yet had the good fortune of being able to say those words, but we have it now. This article looks at the players who played key roles in this Super Bowl run with a specific view to their statistics.
QB-Tyler Wilson- 28 years old, 6’2”, 215 lbs.

The Vikings don’t win the Super Bowl without Wilson, there’s no doubt about that. But honestly, I was a bit discouraged with his numbers this season, specifically his completion percentage which is well below 60% and his 17 interceptions. However, throughout the season he still played at a very high level. I hope to see significant improvement in both highlighted categories in the year ahead.
HB-D’Onta Foreman- 23 years old, 6’1”, 250 lbs.

It’s difficult to be overjoyed by the stats that Foreman put up in his second year in the league but the eye test is why he gets on this list. The context to his numbers is that he converted a ton of 3rd down and shorts with his ability to fall forward. He’s a big back, who when he gets tackled, seems to always get the extra yard. We are excited to see what he does in 2019 with his full progression applied.
WR-Tommy Streeter- 30 years old, 6’5”, 219 lbs.

Streeter had a dominating season with over 1500 yards and double digit TD’s. He’s been a solid WR in his prior four seasons but he was a real difference makers in 2018. It wasn’t just a statistical domination but you could see it on the field as he became the clear #1 target for Wilson. His imposing size made him open even when he wasn’t. He starts regression in 2019 but we still think he will be a valuable piece to the roster.
WR-J’Mon Moore- 23 years old | 6’3”, 205 lbs.
61 rec | 977 yards | 16.02 YPC | 13 TD’s
Moore’s receiving yards aren’t prolific but 20% of his receptions went for TD’s and that made a huge impact on the Vikings fourth ranked scoring offense. As the #2 WR he found a way to contribute and ended up just 23 yards shy of 1000 for the season. I expect to see some improvement in year two, but as long as he is the #2 target, he’s not going to be put up gaudy numbers.
DT-Bronson Kaufusi- 26 years old, 6’6”, 285 lbs.
33 tackles | 7 TFL’s | 8 sacks
Kaufusi was a project DT taken with the last pick in the 2nd round of the 2016 draft. I loved his athleticism but he was small and lacked the elite level baseline 80 ACC to be the starter. But as he progressed, he really started to up his game and 2018 was the proof that he is indeed starting material. He was a disrupter in the offensive backfield garnering 8 sacks and plenty of QB hurries (a stat not tracked but observable by watching games.) He’s entering his 4th season and hopefully he continues his solid play.
MLB-Shaquil Barrett- 28 years old | 6’2” | 250 lbs.
119 tackles | 24 TFL’s | 1 sack |1 forced fumble | 3 INT’s | 17 pass deflections
I really debated whether or not to offer Barrett a contract last season and I’m so glad I did. He was always around the ball and his 24 TFL’s was way beyond what I could have hoped for at the position. He was drafted because of his 99 TAK and he has proven the value of that attribute during his 5 years in the league. He’s rounding into his prime and should only improve his game in 2019.
SS-Haha Clinton-Dix- 28 years old, 6’1”, 208 lbs.
84 tackles | 3 TFL’s | 3 INT’s | 14 pass deflections
Clinton-Dix has been a steady rock in the secondary for five seasons. In 2018 his tackling prowess went up a notch as he was both a run stoppers and a solid pass defender. I drafted him for the same reason that I drafted Barrett, elite TAK. Clinton-Dix entered the league with 94 TAK. He now plays with the maximum 99 TAK and I feel like both he and Barrett really manage things well on the defensive side of the ball. He has two more seasons before he regresses so we will look to get more solid production from him in those years.
CB-Sean Smith- 32 years old | 6’3” | 214 lbs.
80 tackles | 4 TFL’s | 14 INT’s | 29 pass deflections
There’s a bit of a back story on Sean Smith. He’s the only #1 overall pick, I’ve ever had in any Madden league. I had the #3 overall pick that year and really wanted Smith. CB’s are the premium defensive position in Madden and Smith was going to be 99 SPD and 6’3”. I really wanted him. That year the Bills had the 1st overall pick. So I traded, WR-Johnny Morant and the #3 overall pick for the #1. The Bille ended up taking Terrance Knighton, the physically elite DL who struggled to find the right position to play. Well Johnny Morant actually may have been the more productive player between he and Knighton as he put up four stellar seasons in Buffalo, while Knighton had a couple of ten sack seasons but didn’t dominate like most of us thought. I’m digressing here but it is probably the trade with the most valuable components that I have ever made.
To Seam Smith, he actually underperformed statistically his draft position for most of his career. In 2012 he had 8 interceptions, he ran that back in 2016 with 5 but outside of that just not much to show for himself. But the 2018 season was much different. Following the trend of a few other CB’s like Champ Bailey and Tori James, Smith saved his best for a regression season. Smith tallied 14 interceptions and 4 TD’s. A historic season for a defensive back. He’s signed to a couple more seasons, though he is currently holding out. He’s going to get his money. What a great season to help the Vikings defense!
These players were the key statistical performers for the Vikings 2018 Super Bowl winning run. It took a balanced team to win and the Vikings organization had that. The upcoming 2019 season may be one of transition as we need to replace several starters but 2018 will always live on in Minnesota’s memory. |

1.24- WR-J’Mon Moore- 22 years old, 6’3”, 205 lbs.

Thoughts: This was a pick made while in the parking lot heading in for my wife’s birthday. So it did not have the normal preparation that I would normally give to a 1st round pick. I always wait to do my private workouts until my pick is up not wanting to burn workouts on guys that get drafted before me. Some GM’s do it different, but this is my current philosophy. Because I was picking from my phone, the interface was not ideal so I just went with the best player on my board with the pre-draft numbers. I don’t think this is a sustainable strategy long-term but it appears to have worked this time. Moore starts out with 99 SPD and 94 ACC at 6’3”. The skew was also somewhat favorable particular in STR and AGI, places where I like the players to be as good as possible. In the end, I love this pick. However, when the pick was made I was concerned it would not be a good one.
2.1- WR-Dante Pettis- 22 years old, 6’1”, 195 lbs.

Thoughts: I burned all my private workouts here. I was torn between three players at this pick. Most years 2.1 gets a ton of trade offers but I only got one this year so I needed to commit to one player. Neither of the top two guys on my list stood out after I worked them out. Those two players were DE-Marcus Davenport who went the next pick to the Dolphins and TE-Dallas Goedert who went at 2.13 to the Ravens. I also worked out three OLB’s but didn’t like any of them enough to pull the trigger. And then as I took a step beck, I realized that the best value at this pick was to go back to WR and select Dan Pettis. Even though I picked J’Mon Moore only 8 picks earlier, Pettis had the elite level upside that I wanted with 2.1 and so after some agonizing debate, Pettis was the pick to kick-off round 2.
2.18- MLB-Jack Cichy- 23 years old, 6’2”, 234 lbs.

Thoughts: MLB’s have been devalued by the league, but Cichy has all the attributes I like in a MLB. With Davenport and Goedert off the board and the two OLB’s that I worked out that I thought could be decent players also off the board, I went MLB. The downside for Cichy is that he is 23 years old, but we took Shaquil Barrett at that age and he’s turned out fine though admittedly he was more polished than Cichy. However, Cichy offers some high level athleticism plus with the acquisition of James Laurinaitis, he can be mentored helping him progress more quickly. Right now, he looks like the heir apparent to Barrett at this position.
2.24- RE-Chad Thomas- 23 years old, 6’5”, 281 lbs.

Thoughts: I knew that I needed to select a DE with some upside in this draft, but getting the value right is critical. Thomas was a player I workout out at 2.1 but with his ACC going down and his already low AGI, I didn’t see the value. However, 23 picks later I did see the value. I appreciate that Thomas has good size to go along with his 86 SPD and 74 TAK. He will be moved to LE which is a better position for him. It will be interesting to see how he does in game situations. Getting his ACC over 80 is going to be very important. I wasn’t sure I really want to select a DE like Thomas, but Cameron Jordan’s career made it easier for me to take the gamble.
4.24- ROLB-Shaquem Grffin- 22 years old, 6’1”, 231 lbs.
Initial- 83 SPD | 84 STR | 52 AWR | 82 AGI | 86 ACC | 55 CTH | 77 JMP | 61 TAK

Thoughts: Griffin was a lottery ticket of a pick. The hope was that he could skew favorably in SPD. He did the opposite, so he is likely to be a career backup. Not ideal, but he’s a cheap backup and those are important.
5.24- DT-Tim Settle- 22 years old, 6’3”, 329 lbs.

Thoughts: I feel like I could just run back my thoughts on Griffin with Settle. We seem to never be able to get a strong DT with any type of athleticism. I thought maybe Settle could at least give us some type of STR as the position and then he skewed down 2. Well he won’t see much playing time, but he’s nice to have as an inexpensive reserve.
5.25- TE-Tyler Conklin- 22 years old, 6’3”, 254 lbs.
Initial- 81 SPD | 69 STR | 53 AWR | 81 AGI | 84 ACC | 72 CTH | 84 JMP | 54 PBK | 56 RBK

Thoughts: I felt the TE position was deep in this class. Conklin was down the list for me but I thought with a decent skew he would be a very good #2. Turns out he had a horrible skew lol. So he’s on the roster, but I don’t know for how long.
6.24- CB-Isaac Yiadom- 21 years old, 6’1”, 190 lbs.

Thoughts: My thoughts are if he only had a little more SPD he could have some upside. I love the 65 AWR and 6’1” frame. However, with his SPD only at 87, he will be limited in what he can do. If for some reason he would have been the draft gem, he could have been really good. He’s another one of those needed cheap reserves.
Overall, I’m pleased with the draft. I’ve got four very useful players. Two on offense and two on defense. Looking forward to the 2018 season with a fully healthy Tyler Wilson. |

Vikings Offseason Trades and Signings |
The Vikings philosophy is a more of a build through the draft formula rather than through free agency or through trades. But all GM philosophies are on a continuum. No GM is completely draft only or trades only or free agency only and this is true for Minnesota as well. So here's a look our offseason signings and trades.
Resign
WR-Shaq Evans- 27 years old, 6'1", 204 lbs.
96 SPD | 71 STR | 61 AWR | 99 AGI | 99 ACC | 84 CTH | 99 JMP
Evans was acquired last offseason from Seattle and was a 1000 yard receiver in 2017. He's our #2 WR behind veteran Tommy Streeter. We like his athleticism and paticularly his 99 AGI | ACC | JMP. Evans signed a four year deal worth 21.56m with a 3.64m signing bonus.
Restructure
CB-Tevaughn Campbell- 26 years old, 6'0", 200 lbs.
99 SPD | 65 STR | 77 AWR | 97 AGI | 99 ACC | 67 CTH | 94 JMP | 48 TAK
Campbell is currently the #2 CB behind Sean Smith. He needs to build up his awareness some more but he has the elite SPD | AGI | ACC that we covet. He's played OK his first three seasons here but more will be expected of him in 2018. Campbell signed a 5 year deal worth 22.45m with a 8.9m signing bonus.
Match Eligible
MLB-Shaquil Barrett, 27 years old, 6'2", 250 lbs.

We really wanted Barrett back, but since we could only guarantee one player, we went with WR-Evans. The thought here was that since he was a MLB and everyone pretty much has their MLB, we could get Barrett back through match eligible and that indeed turned out to be the case. Barrett played MLB in the 4-3 and 3-4 last year and we expect his role to be similar in 2018. Barrett signed a 4 year deal worth 22.0m with a 5.6m signing bonus.
Pre-Draft Free Agent Signings
CB-Aaron Ross- 32 years old, 6'1", 192 lbs.
87 SPD | 47 STR | 97 AWR | 85 AGI | 87 ACC | 81 CTH | 84 JMP | 63 TAK
You can never have enough high AWR CB's. Virtually every contender has proven that. Ross comes in as the 2nd CB with over 90 AWR and mentor cabilities. He won't see a ton of time but more than likely will be the dime CB. He signed a one year deal worth 5.2m with a 2.0m signing bonus.
CB-Malcolm Butler- 28 years old, 5'11", 190 lbs.
96 SPD | 54 STR | 60 AWR | 91 AGI | 99 ACC | 74 CTH | 90 JMP | 82 TAK
Sometimes when you draft a guy you just can't let him go. Butler is one of those guys. He won't get much in the way of development from here but he's a great alternative if to move up the depth chart if someone gets hurt. He signed a 3 year deal worth 12.0m with a 2.4m signing bonus.
QB-Ricky Stanzi- 29 years old, 6'4", 230 lbs.
76 AWR | 98 THP | 89 THA
Stanzi was acquired from New Orleans last season as our backup and ended up playing more snaps than our starter Tyler Wilson due to injury. Obviously we are not hoping for that situation to recur but if it does, Stanzi has shown the ability to get us to the playoffs. Stanzi signed a three year deal worth 18.6m with a 4.5m signing bonus.
QB-Matthew Stafford- 30 years old, 6'2", 220 lbs.
76 AWR | 88 THP | 88 THA
In free agency we wanted two QB's but we were bidding against other teams for two of them but ended up winning three. Stafford was the third QB in priority so we signed him and then dealt him away. I don't have the exact numbers on his contract, since he is no longer with us.
QB-Aaron Murray
27 years old, 6'1", 211 lbs.
65 AWR | 88 THP | 92 THA
We loved the Murray signing since we didn't bid against anyone. Therefore, we could get him at a really good price. He will replace Andy Dalton, who was third string QB last season. Murray signed a three year deal worth 3.4m with a 900k signing bonus.

Summary: Green is a great backup TE with starting potentially but we wanted more AWR on defense and Bills were looking to move Laurinitis so traded Green along with our 3rd to get him.

Vikings send: QB-Matthew Stafford
Bills send: Lions 4th
Summary:We had too many backup QB's and the Bills reached out to us about getting one. We didn't need a huge return and felt like a late 4th was a good fit for our troubles of having to eat some money on the cap. I'm sure the Bills like having Stafford on a three year deal without any signing bonus. |

2016 Minnesota Vikings Season Review
The Vikings went 14-2 in 2016 and that is a successful season by virtually any measure, except for the fact that they lost in the first round of the divisional series to an excellent Dallas Cowboys team. But the end doesn’t tell the whole story so here’s a look at the game by game journey of the 2016 Minnesota Vikings .
Game 1

Summary: The first game of the season is an unpredictable game. This is true for virtually every team in the SFL but it seems like it’s true even more so for the Minnesota Vikings. In week one, the Vikings were pounded by their division rival Green Bay Packers by a score of 30-7. The story, of course here is very intriguing when you fast forward to the end of the season and see that the Packers did not actually have a successful season. Nevermind the fact that in game one the Packers back up John Beck (a former Vikings draft pick) was the main signal caller with Andrew Luck going out of the game after only two passes. But the fact still remains, the Packers were the much better team on this occasion. Jamaal Charles had an 87 yard touchdown run Mark Ingram, who wasn’t necessarily great on the yards per carry basis, also had a touchdown and Riley Cooper had five catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, the Vikings did not fair well offensively. Tyler Wilson, the up-and-coming star for the Vikings at the quarterback position went 17-34 was sacked four times and threw an interception. Lamar Miller had 13 carries for 46 yards averaging 3.54 yards per carry. Also not going to get it done. The only real bright spot for the Vikings was rookie TE Nick Vannett, who had eight receptions for 56 yards. The Packers out gained the Vikings 420-218 and had 15 1st downs compared to 11 for the Vikings. This was not the start we were looking for 0-1 right out of the gate.

Analysis: We purchased 2 additional training camp slots wanting to work on both sides of the line. Three rookies get to go training camp (Clark, Nassib, and Kaufusi), while 2 second year players go (Sambrallo and Green). Three of these players (Sambrallo, Clark, and Nassib) are starters this season with the other two being likely starters (Green and Kaufusi). Bronson Kaufusi is a long-term project, but we believe in two year’s time, he could be a very unique DT in the SFL with 77 SPD, 90 STR, 82 AGI, and 80 ACC. We think he’s worth the investment though obviously time will tell.

Analysis: Ratings boosts for the Vikings are typically almost always about SPD, betting on the idea that SPD is the most important attribute. In this round of ratings boosts it’s also all on the defense, though when a technical issue gets squared away, TE-Nick Vannett will get a ratings boost in SPD as well. Sean Smith is our best CB and he get one season at 99 SPD before starting to regress. He should regress well going to 97 SPD then 95 SPD then 92 SPD and then 89 SPD. We believe all four seasons, he will still be very playable with perhaps only the last season in a backup role. Howard and Campbell are the new wave of CB’s on the roster. Howard’s 66 AWR makes him worth investing in from a ratings boost perspective. Barrett and Alexander will be the backbone of the LB core and, along with Nassib, provide versatility for us to be able to play a 4-3 or a 3-4.
